Having a few articles and a word processor at the same time is easy with a tiled WM or just... you know, changing the shapes of windows and dragging them around. Or, as discussed earlier, virtual desktops. Can flick between them instantly.

You don't need so much real estate to work effectively. What you need is less shit cluttering your mind. When I used i3 and had 6000 different windows open while writing a script, the speed at which I worked slowed to a crawl. Then, when I increased the font sizes and simply made everything full screen and in a virtual desktop, flicking between them instantly like tabs in a browser, I was meeting quotas with about a fifth of the time left over.

Not the guy you replied to, but the standard aspect ratio nowadays is 16:9, though you'll find 16:10 monitors here and there. If you were to buy the same model so as to avoid having different color settings and whatnot, you could not do this: the height isn't 1/2 the width, you can't put two screens in landscape like that and hope that the portrait one matches the edges.

Find us 2:1 monitors and we can do it just fine.
