Anyone know what would be best for file sharing between Linux/Windows hosts? I have a Raspberry Pi and would like to map a network drive for the Windows machine to use a file server on the Pi. What would be best for this?

And do I only have to make sure that there is an rc script so that whenever each host is rebooted, that it automatically mounts the network share?

If I have a raspberry pi, and I stick a couple HDDs in there, would it be good enough to use as a home file server? My home up-speed is 10Mb/s, but I'm mostly going to be transferring relatively small files when I'm not at home.

Would it also be good enough for sticking an email server on there?

I have literally never maintained a server so obviously I'll need to do a bunch of research to do it properly, but I'd like to have a general idea of how feasible it is and what might be the biggest problems/expenses.

How bad will that actually be in practice?

Say if I'm at home and I want to stream a FHD movie over wlan. Does that mean that I won't be able to with the raspi?

If so, what's the minimum I can get away for this purpose? I feel like setting this up would be a fun project and nice sysadmin experience but I'm doing just fine without and don't want to sink much money into it.

Heck, could I tinker something with the rpi's pins or something? Has anybody done anything like that before? That might be fun if it's doable, I've literally never done any kind of EE work so it would probably be really interesting.

Do you not know what a bump limit is?

From the name, you could infer that it's the limit beyond which new replies don't bump the thread. If you sort by last replied, I'm assuming that since it ignores bumps it would still have the thread show up on top.
Alternatively, since that defeats the point of a bump limit if enough people use it, perhaps it doesn't ignore it.

It all depends what you expect from it. Honestly I think it would work - fine - as a NAS for instance because I don't really care about read/write speeds for backups and whatnot.

Certainly a fun project though. The only reason I haven't done it yet was because I suggested the same thing to my professor who told me what I said to you; that it won't be as efficient due to how its constructed.

I have some experience and now I'm studying for a CS degree. From observing some of my fellows who had no experience whatsoever before starting their course, I can tell you that a logical mind is all you really need.

Case in point, I know a guy who literally never wrote a line of code before, and now while he lacks some knowledge of things like language features or important design patterns, he's able to apply what he does know really well. He reasons logically, and code is really just a set of instructions arranged logically.

If you want look into propositional or predicate logic. Does it "speak" to you? Do you have to pore over it just to make some sense, or do you understand the concepts relatively easily? Then, consider automata (e.g. DFAs) and regular languages; can you easily construct an automaton corresponding to a particular language, do you understand what you're doing, or do you need to spend hours trying to make head or tails of what is it you're constructing and how it works?

If you do the above well, then you're probably going to be good at programming.

On the other hand, I know some students who simply can't into logic, and then even when working in a group project with experienced people they fail because even when asking for help, they don't understand what it is exactly that they don't know, so they never even consider the correct path to the solution and instead ask for assistance on irrelevant details. These people are more creative than logical; they will likely never become a good programmer.

Not really technology related but I need to vent. Why the fuck is it so hard to get a God damned credit card?! >employed full time and have been for the last 6 years at the same job.
>I make just under $4000 a month.
>have thousands of dollars saved in a checking account in my name.
>had a car payment in my name and finished paying off said car 2 years ago. (All $23,000 of it)
>insurance in my name
>phone bill in my name
>I even financed my phone and my little sister's phone for the sake of financing them. Money wasn't the issue.

This is fucking bullshit. I know my credit just got established and is floating in the high 600's, but every "average or fair credit" based card is denying me. I don't even want a credit card! But I need to bump my credit more for when I go to get a mortgage. Is age a factor? I'm 25. What black magic must I pull to get a damned CC? I don't care if it has rewards or cash back. I don't plan on buying garbage I don't need. I'd be using the card(s) solely for paying bills I already have, then paying the card (s) off at the end of each month.

This is retarded.

This may be a case of "depends on your setup", but if it's answerable, do you think something like streaming Blu-ray movies is possible?

If that's not something that can be accurately estimated just like that then I'm off on a quest to find out more. I've been entertaining the diea for a while, about time I actually put it in motion (or put it to rest if it turns out to be completely impractical).

Literally go to your bank and ask for one.

For instance I used to bank with BofA and had zero credit. I went to my bank and talked to them about a credit card. They said they could do a "secured" card. That meant I'd pay a deposit (could be for part or all of the amount of your credit limit) and have a low limit card. After a year of being in good credit standing, you get the deposit back.

Alternatively go to a credit union and ask them the same thing. Just be aware to use the term secured credit card.

General credit advice: never close an account. Pay more than the minimum owed. If you pay your full balance of your credit card each month you won't pay ANY interest and still build credit. Only use up to 30% of your credit limit if possible, using more will lead to a lower credit score. Do not miss any payments. You can refinance car loans if your APR is too high. Anything above 4% is too high.

>These people are more creative than logical; they will likely never become a good programmer.
Not him, but this isn't necessarily true, but I agree with most of your point. I feel programming is a sort of dichotomy between creativity and logicality. One man might not be a highly proficient programmer, but he could have the ability to understand what his goal is when understanding whatever project he works on as a whole. Vice versa with a highly proficient programmer, only lacks the creative understanding of where the code he's constructing is going and lacking a creative context. This is all just my educated assumption, but I think it's good to develop a balance between the two.

Thanks anon

Yea people were telling me about secure credit cards. I just figured that was only for people with no credit and like. I mentioned, I'm in the high 600's so I figured I was above the need of a secure line. And fuck paying late fees. I don't miss payments.

>4% is considered too high

Lol I was paying 13.89% APR on my car payment because I needed a car and went into it with absolutely zero credit. Payments were manageable because I put $7,000 down.

Ok so maybe I'll poke my head into the bank and get a secure credit line. Put down $500. Pay for my groceries and gas with it.

imo it makes some sense because that's an approximation of the measurements in inches the average screen will have, and because it's easily comparable to 16:9

>Lol I was paying 13.89% APR on my car payment because I needed a car and went into it with absolutely zero credit. Payments were manageable because I put $7,000 down.
I didn't even tell you about why I got a card in the first place but its certainly similar to that! I was living in Seattle and was taking public transit to work. Because of the route I had to take, it was $10/day. With a $100 monthly pass I'd still be paying $1,200 a year so I said fuck it lets buy a car. With zero credit I had few options except for putting $3,000 down on a 60 month 24% interest loan. I did that and planned on refi-ing in about a year. It ended up being about 2.5 years before I could refi but now its all paid off.

>Ok so maybe I'll poke my head into the bank and get a secure credit line. Put down $500. Pay for my groceries and gas with it.
Yeah do that for sure. I put about $200-300 on my two cards each month which puts me at about 10-15% usage.

To show my experience with credit score I started with no credit history in 2012 and now I've been at 770 for about a year. I'm not sure how much higher it will go without a mortgage.

>Is age a factor?
No. Let me school you a bit on credit scores. Your credit score -- FICO score, there are others. FICO is the only one that matters. Credit Karma and some other sites give you a VantageScore which is bullshit -- is composed of a few parts:

1. Payment history (35%). This is easy, just pay your bills on time. It's super easy to get fucked here for a long time. Missed payments stay on your credit report for SEVEN YEARS. The further back the missed payment was, the less it will affect your credit score. But it still takes a long time to fix. Don't miss your fucking payments.
2. Credit utilization (30%). This is how much of your total credit you are using. You start losing points here quickly the closer you get to 100%. In general, anything above 30% total usage is going to start losing you points.
3. Length of credit history (15%). This one is hard for several reasons. It has a total length and an average length component. So it factors in your oldest credit account. But it also drops every time you open a new card because that card drops your average length. If you only have one card for 10 years, and then you open a new one, well your average is now 5 years. This would have less effect if you had 5 cards for 10 years. Then your average length would only drop to 8.3 years.
4. New accounts (10%). This is how frequently you've opened new credit. It also includes "hard pulls" on your credit report. Which you get every time you apply for a card. So you're fucking yourself here every time you apply for a card and get rejected. Stop applying for "average or fair" credit cards when you know you wont get them. Get a secured card from your bank until your score goes up.
5. Credit mix (10%). This factors in how many different types of credit you have. E.g. student loans, mortgage, revolving credit, etc.

It's not rocket science. Just look at each category, figure out how you can make it better, and go from there.

600s are shit credit. Below 675 and you may as well be a drug addict that keeps getting his shit repo'd. It roughly goes like this:

720 – 850 Excellent
700 – 719
675 – 699 Average
620 – 674
560 – 619
500 – 559 Poor

Remember, average isn't good. It's just not bad. It doesn't mean you'll get accepted for anything.

Cloudflare > Registrar > VPS provider

Cloudflare isn't going to be taken down by a DDOS, period. A major registrar might be, but they'll mitigate it. Your VPS provider most likely has the least amount of resources out of all of them. If someone attacks their DNS to take down someone else's site, your site would be caught in the crossfire.

That stuff pulls water into your bowels as long as it's there. When you have passed the laxative and then got rid of the remaining watery crap, it's done.

With an amount this large, I imagine there might be some remaining effect when you start eating again and your gut again has material to get rid of the tiny remainders. 1120x700. Which doesn't exist.
In order to scale 1080p down to 720p we must divide by 2.25.
When we scale 1680x1050 down 2.25 fold we get 1120x700 (maintaining the 16:10 aspect ratio).

Anyways here are some 16:10 monitor resolutions that do exists:
1280x800
1440x900
1680x1050
1920x1200
2560x1600
3840x2400

If you get spam or not doesnt depend on what service you use, but how you share your email adress.

Also if the spammer ever gives up, i used to receive 50 spam mails a day when i registered lots of websites, this days i get the same 3 spam mails which are about viagra, credit loans and universities.

Looks like that's only for email accounts on custom domains; they use SPF, DKIM, AND DMARC for that. I didn't see anything about those for regular email accounts.

Install Windows 7 ultimate x64.

It highlights a bunch of different services at once though. One of them is windows update or something (I forget what exactly), which is odd, since I have windows 10 set to metered internet connection to avoid the automatic update shit.

Anyways, if I kill the process, nothing bad happens, and when it's there, it eats up a lot of CPU usage and raises my CPU temps by like 8 degrees alone, and after killing it, it comes back.

Any advice for what I can do from here to get rid of this? It only started a few days agi

I have an atx tower with 8 hard drive slots. I want to use it as Nas. Should I go with Nas hdds (like wd red) or is anything fine? Does it matter of the mobo has 8 sata slots or should I get a cheaper board and just use PCI expanders? I'm thinking of using Freenas with zfs, will this cause any issues on Windows 7 as a network drive? Is it worth it getting a mobo with dual gigabit? Can you truncate it with Freenas and will it even make a difference if the router doesn't support truncation?
