Realistically, what you'd get out of them if they practiced straight up copylefting is drivers for the specific set of hardware, and their DRM scheme (Which is obviously why they went BSD and not GPLx)

Really the biggest advantage we'd see is that we'd see hacks and homebrew on the system faster and better than before.

No, they gave raving scores because you can't shit on games with large marketing budgets without being left out of the pie. That's how it works for any AAA game, unless it has glaring flaws like Mass Effect Andromeda (and even then it still got a 70 which is a huge compromise for that pile of turd). BoTW is really middle of the road. I think Zelda fans are impressed with it because they haven't played any open world games in the last ten years.

I was going to raise a similar point. The last big Zelda game before this was Skyward Sword and that left a sour taste in some people's mouths, specially with the controls. So basically it's more like a title for people who got starved of anything as decent as perhaps Wind Waker or previous titles (same as Twilight Princess, really mediocre but since it's a zelda game being quite traditional and hitting the exact same spots after some time without anything similar it's highly rated).

That said, at the same time I repeat, I don't doubt this is bad, just that it's difficult to expect this to be really a step up from what is actually expected in terms of quality.
