Qt/KDE's file picker has the option, and I believe GTK3's file picker has it as well.
For GTK2, there's https://gist.github.com/ahodesuka/01213036b58e510dc074, but nothing of the sort will ever be implemented, because the feature was at first rejected and right now it'll only get bugfixes and security updates.
I'm still of the opinion that those toolkits should open an external file picker instead of providing their own, since that'd allow more uniformity with the desktop environment, as well as more feature-rich/customizeable file pickers.

Numerous patches have been sitting in the Gnome bug tracker for years.

The patches bit rot as Gnome break their API in every other month, and then the Gnome devs would then come out and say, "If you like this so much, why don't you write a patch?"

Also the freedesktop tards have been the whore of RedHat for years now. They won't allow a DE-agnostic "file picker API" to be implemented.

This thread:
>>Linux sucks, file picker doesn't do thumbnails!
>Yeah it does, the KDE one for example
>>I don't like KDE, so it doesn't count!
Fuck's sake guys, hate on Linux if you want, but if you're going to use some feature (or lack thereof) as justification, at least be accurate about it, and don't say "yeah, but not that one" when a counterpoint is given.
>>
>>59788115
The last major post there uses a lot of words to basically say "the entire architecture is absolutely fundamentally fucked to the point where it would be a herculean undertaking to achieve something as simple as a file picker with thumbnails". I can absolutely believe that. GNU on the desktop is fucked. Nothing works properly.

Linux is for recovery USBs and headless servers. And I'm not so sure about the latter; I'm investigating moving away from Linux for my servers. I don't know enough about the BSDs to make the jump just yet, though.
>>
>>59788822
KDE is the "alternative" option. It's the red headed stepchild. It can be made to look pretty but it's even less usable than Gnome. When people talk about the Linux desktop, they're talking about the stuff beginning with G.

The issue is that the file chooser won't generate a thumbnail if one doesn't already exist.

There's an autistic showdown between people who think there shouldn't be thumbnail generation code in the file chooser and more pragmatic people.

I think there's been various patches in the bugzilla for literally a decade though.

Everyone has it like in your image. You can't change the size of the thumbnails to a size where you can discern small differences in images, so the size isn't sufficient. This has been the problem/argument since day 1.
