2nd/3rd hand laptops what do?

Since I've got more time than sense, the first thing I'd do is search exhaustively for any secret hardware that's spying on me.

But for a more reasonable person the first step after reinstalling the OS and critical applications should be to make a fresh disk image. That way if you ever need to start fresh again, you bring it back to a snapshot instead of having to reinstall everything and the kitchen sink.

I do get good deals on laptops because some get password locked and they can't get in them.

doesn't seem to be the case here where i live. all their laptops still had personal information on them. most seemed like they tried to just delete stuff but logins were still set.

heck i saw one laptop that had medical information (as if it came out of a doctor's office)

did they stop putting windows keys on the bottom of the laptops?

now *nix, hackintosh or wipe/rebild windows.

pull the hard drive ans stick it in a usb enclosure, plug it into my primary machine, then run Recuva or Testdisk and go through everything I find.

no nudes. still messing in the laptop. found a bunch of college type work. pdfs and word documents. seems whoever pawned it was going to college. possibly a veteran.

checked for usuall spyware and seems clean.

no winblows key underneath (sticker gone?)

i'll have to find pull the key from registry before i wipe if i want to go back to wangblows without paying for it.

oh shut the fuck up. not everyone can afford the latest lelnovo memepad. i'm posting this from a Dell Latitude D630 that i got a few weeks ago for $10 because it didn't turn on and didn't have a hard drive. turns out the LCD ribbon was partly unplugged and the laptop works 100% after putting in a cheap old HDD.
