Still seeking strap/bracelet advice. So far this brown leather works but I'll probably get bored of it eventually.

10/10
Hey /g/, I'm finally just ahead of my first fairly expensive watch purchase. Have decided on the blue Aqua Terra since I love its versatility and though it's purely for emotional rather than technical superiority being British it's nice to own a Co-Axial since it was a British invented movement. I know there is better technology I could get for the price but it ticks every box for me personally.
The only thing I'm down to is whether to buy the 38.5mm or the 41.5mm. The older ones with a date window are pretty much only available online The left image is a 38mm watch and the right is a 42, both with a thin bezel as the AT will have. My fiancee prefers the smaller whereas my male work colleagues say I should go for the larger. I want to be able to use it as much as possible for every occasion, but considering neither of them will fit under a shirt cuff, it's not worth considering for a dress watch or any occasion at work I'll have to be wearing a shirt properly.
Sorry for the blog, just that this is a major purchase and thanks in advance for the help.
>>59781194
38 looks just right I think
>>59781155
Couldn't you get a gold oyster bracelet with the centre link the same as your lug width and remove the end links?
>>59781194
38mm 42mm is too big for that style watch imho. It's fine on a diver or fleiger though.
>>59781209
>>59781239
Cheers, is the way I was leaning too. Wear the watch don't have it wear you etc.
>>59781048
Looking good. Is that 39mm?
Thoughts on the casio oceanus?
500$ for a quartz is kinda steep but I kinda want it.
>>59781275
the non standard lugs are annoying. other than that great watch.
I have €40k in cash to live on for the next 6 months and I want one watch as a beginner high end watch that doesn't bankrupt me.
What should I buy?
Rolex Explorer
Can go with a suit while still being a field watch, it's a good collector's piece, certified chronometer, cheap service costs, not an asshole's watch, etc.

>ANUS
>>59781194
Have you handled one in person? Make sure you do before you buy. The hands, case, and especially the bracelet are simply nowhere near up to the quality standard they should be for the price of that watch.
Also be aware the servicing costs are going to be quite high because you'll have to take it to the official service center.
>>59781335
Lol no.
>>59781224
Probably. I'm thinking presidential or jubilee instead of oyster though.

>>59781425

>>59781419
Air King has more history and holds value better IIRC.
Service is spendy from Rolex but you can find local watchmakers that will do it for a few hundred. Only needs one every 5 to 10 years as long as you don't fuck it's shit.
>>59781413
Hard to find sub 40mm reps that aren't too thick
>>59781462
Is this just because of limitations in movement selection?
>>59781384
Only the bigger one but I do agree with you to an extent. Certainly in comparison to the Explorer which is probably its main competition there are several areas in which it's inferior. It ultimately boils down to the colour though, the Navy colour combined with the hands make it less boring than it would be black without being too gaudy, slightly sporty but not too much that I can't wear it at work etc. It generally strikes a balance I've not seen in anything else I've looked at, and I've been deciding this for about 3 months now.

I've shopped the stock picture of the Vostok GMT I am waiting for with the custom bezel insert I've also ordered. Do you guys like it?
I didn't want a black bezel because I want this watch to look as quirky as it can get.
>>59781475
Yes. They generally use the same type of movement for most reps. I once around 6 years ago had a rep that was just two movements glued together. It came loose and I opened it, took the loose half out and the watch ran well again.
>>59781404
Yeah, I just thought the oyster centre link would fill the gap in the lugs better.
Either way that's the way I would go.
>>59781501
I'm getting that watch too. Which aftermarket bezels are currently available?
>>59781476
I just wanted to make sure you were aware. I have a Seiko SDGM001 and I'm not kidding when I tell you that the hands, case and bracelet on the Seiko are noticeably better than the Omega AT.
I'm any case, if you are set on the watch no question you should get the 38mm size.
Why don't (non-mechanical) watches include magnets?
Would be really useful
I'm thinking of buying a sarb033 for a beater watch.

AmWatches (eBay) sells GMT bezels (bezel+insert) for 50€ which is ridiculously expensive for what it is. You could get a bezel without insert from boris_bgv (also on eBay) or from Murphy (google it) and get a GMT bezel insert for the SKX you like the most. Either from dagaz or from some chink seller on eBay, mine is coming from China for 17€ shipped and I already have one spare bezel without insert.

>Either you tell us WHAT history, or we're just going to assume you're lying on the internet
Who is "we"? You sound like a retard.
And the Air King was part of the immediately post WWII lineup of watches in the "Air-" series that were designed as cheap, manual wind pilot's watches for servicemen who couldn't afford the higher end Rolex models but still didn't want a shitter. Other than adding automatic movements later on as a standard feature they remained largely unchanged for like 60 years. Plus companies like Pan Am had interesting, factory made dial variations that are rare, interesting and collectible.
The nameless, base model "Oyster" is a very nice watch but other than the whole history of the Rolex Oyster case and their bi-directional auto winders (which all of the other Rolex models share other than the Cellini line or extremely old vintage stuff), they don't particularly have anything cool to say about them.

>>59783612
>"""""Replica"""""" watches are illegal to own.
FUCKOFF LYING SHILL
Totally legal. Correct.
These aren't actually counterfeit goods.
To be a counterfeit good an item must not only resemble another in every way it must also be sold or possessed with the claim that it IS the other item.
For instance.
Let's say you buy this watch from one of these on-line sites. Your receipt will clearly state REPLICA Rolex as they are selling it to you while clearly informing you that it is not real.
If you then went and sold this watch and told the buyer it was a REAL Rolex it would then be a counterfeit watch because you would be attempting to pass it off as the real thing.
You could even re-sell these watches legally as long as you call them REPLICA Rolexes.
The intent to deceive the buyer is a big part of the definition of a counterfeit.

>>59786803
For the same reason swatch produced a watch that looked like a pepper.

What's the min amount you need to pay for a watch with a regulated and adjusted movement, as in not just slapped together and pushed out the door?
Are they only on kilobuck watches?
>>59787072
You can get a cosc certified mido watch for well under a kilobuck
>>59786606
It's cheap quartz chink shit, it will break soon and have shit accuracy. Looking it's a counterfeit and you should be ashamed.
You should've spent like $20 more and got a Casio Pope watch.
>>59787072
>a regulated and adjusted movement
Define
Anyway:
*Sistem51 supposedly gets near-COSC accuracy for <$200, balance adjusted by laser ablation
*ETA2824 shitters can achieve good performance too, but they are usually just dumped in cases unless you pay a kilobuck or more.
F91W achieves good accuracy too, for $10

Chris Ward sells some COSC certified watches, most are quartz though.

The vast majority of watch movements are assembled (either by hand or by robot) and then put in a case and sold. How accurate they are when assembled is down to chance and it wont get any better. No attempt is made adjust or regulate the movement and the watch never spends any time on a timegrapher.
>>59786606
The worst part is that I can't even tell the difference
HOMOS owners BTFO
>>59787210
+/-10s or you get it exchanged under warranty
The shitty plastic parts will limit the lifespan, but as the movement isn't made to be serviced, we do not need parts that last longer than a few years.
After all, it's a disposable watch
>>59787246
So you care about the existence of a calibration process, not the resulting performance?
Can't help you there
So when is ETA going to stop selling their movements?
I've seen forum posts from 2013 panicking about this. And it still hasn't happened.
What's a cheap and sturdy quartz with hipster tier aesthetic?
I need a watch that can take a beating but I love my vintage slavshit
>>59787364
raketa moonphase
>>59787380
No, sturdier. Water resistance would be nice. Moonphases are pretty sexy though, on my list of shit to get eventually
>>59787321
Supposed to be 2019, but Swatch are starting to miss those ETAbux, so it's going to continue
If Swatch execs have their heads screwed on right, they'll ditch the low movement grades and sell chronometer ebauches only, and only to somewhat prestigeous manufactuers.
Which Daniel Wellington should I buy?

This one, it's so discreet they don't even show the DW brand on the dial

I like the "Nomos" special edition Denzel Washington they made in Germany.
Anyone know where I can find a watch strap with similar feel and material as the default sport strap that come with base model Apple watches?
I have tried a couple of the best-selling silicone straps on Amazon but they are way too grippy and constantly causes the cuff of my shirts to ride up my arm.
Looking for a vintage piece in the range $1k-$7k. Anything from a pie-pan connie to an original B-Uhr is thinkable.
What's the best I can do?
>>59787611
See if you can find a JLC geophysic in that range.
>>59787072
Assuming you mean a new watch, the absolute cheapest you can get a high grade finely adjusted movement is a Steinshit Ocean Titanium 500 for €500 which comes with an ETA 2892-A2 top grade (same spec as COSC but without the certificate).
I would take an ETA 2892-A2 TOP over a COSC certified ETA 2824-2 any day of the week.
>>59787300
>+/-10s/d

What could he have intended to convey with such a performance?
>>59787321
They aren't. Their brands are doing so badly that they desperately need the ebauche sales now. They ain't cutting off anyone.
>>59787627
Nice, but way out of the price range. The new ones are some of the nicest dress watches around.
>>59787716
Realized accuracy (From a limited sample on WUS) indicates chronometer or near-chronometer perofrmance when worn, while +/-10s is the worst-case performance guarantee by Swatch.
>>59787611

Do you mean vintage like pre-quartz revolution or as in pre-owned?
>>59787825
Older than 1970, preferably around 1935-1960
>>59787848
In that time period with that budget you'd even be able to look at some vintage Pateks, assuming you could stomach the servicing costs.

they wont senpai, if anything they'll run more accurate for a longer time than it takes a seiko 5 to reach its service interval.

eta have been using plastic in movements since 2008, tissot had a watch in the 70s that used it, i have one and it still runs fine.
>>59788022
Does the astrolon have a plastic pallet fork and escape wheel though?
>>59788036
yes
plastic is a great material for low cost non serviceable movements.
>>59788147
Maybe if the sistem51 was <=$30 and not $150 it'd be justified in being a throwaway movement.
>>59787937

Do you happen to have any resources on the reliability and accuracy of those Astrolon movements?
The idea that a plastic escape wheel and pallet fork would stand up to long term use and return any reasonably degree of accuracy seems quite strange to me based on what I know about the wear resistance and strength of plastics.

>>59788904
It's a 136.017 with a caliber 613 movement with a 2615xxxx serial, which dates to roughly 1968. The 136.017 cosmics came with tons of dials; I've seen 3 examples with these numerals out of maybe 200 I've looked at.

>>59789007
The cosmics are fantastic and the 601/613 movements in them are fantastic. Note that the casebacks don't open; to service the watch, the crown is removed and compressed air is used to pop off the crystal, after which the hands and dial are removed and the movement is removed from the front. This allows a great case shape, but means servicing can be tricky and you should make sure to use a competent watchmaker.

you can also use a crystal remover instead of compressed air, but yeah, you still have to remove hands, dial, and crown to get the movement out.
EDC is an autistic fad so instead post nice things you carry often that are actually useful.
