You're comparing apples and oranges..

WYSIWYG editor vs. Macro editor for a typesetting system - both have it's advantages, but different purposes.

Beamer is a nice thing, but from what I've read about it, it's more difficult than PPT, it doesn't give you all the freedoms PPT has apparently there's still bugfixing going on.
Especially for graphical stuff you don't waht it overly complicated, so I'd rather use Prezi or even Reveal.js here.

Excel vs. Python is a stupid comparison. It's like comparing a bike vs. a helicopter and I'd like to see you lading on the roof of the grocery store next to you.

Excel get's often underestimated. I did an MS Project clone and even a small Database once (users didn't have MS Access let alone a SQL server).

It's a complete system with a GUI, built-in event handling, can create complex graphics, has it's own IDE, access to the Win DLLs, and it's piss easy for user interaction, even normies can use it.

How many lines of code would that be in Python, regarding you have to set up a user interface, create a table, hard wire events, make a formula interpreter, catch errors..?

If you think this "well, I python I would just sum them" you're missing the point: This works out of the box and you get a completely interactive sheet which you can use for user I/O, verrifying data or whatever. Not taking about the easy way to move data from Excel to Access, PowerPoint, Word or even Outlook.


Don't get me wrong, VBA is ugly, clumsy and has a lot of flaws. But for a "quick and dirty" data minipulation with user interaction it beats everything.
