Why hasn't flatpak really caught on, yet? I've used a couple of them, and it works quite well, and the idea of packaging and sandboxing seems like a good idea.

it sounds sort of like docker but for desktop applications
I think the main issue is lack of publicity, and it seems like this would encur a lot of overhead with each application

I can't imagine the overhead would be that much, and the trade is getting sandboxing, which is good for security, as well as the ability to push one complete package that can be distributed to any distro.

It's basically a functioning and supported version of what steam on Linux attempts to do in the first place
