I'm going to buy either the t460 or t460s. Despite being almost 300$ more expensive the s version has wqhd, faster SSD and better materials.

However I read some reports of people saying the 460s trackpoint is shite. Does someone have either of these models?
>>
>>59752181
I have a T460s,

Trackpoint was no problem for me, but have heard others bitch moan about it.

Easily modded to fix if you aren't happy with it though.

I have an x230t, and it seems like my display panel is starting to give. What's the best replacement panel to buy? And is it possible to use one of those 1080p panels that are used in the x230 (non-tablet)?

>>59752383
Considering it since the palm wrest is also a little cracked. I can only find chinkshit ones though that don't have the StinkPad logo on them, are they any good? Not worth me importing a palmrest from the US to the UK for a cheapo laptop.

Also noticed today the dumbshit previous owner must have dropped it because the display is bent on one side.
>>
>>59752321
Very happy with it, work in IT supp for a large company. T460s are the current staff refresh model which was picked by higher ups purely because it weighed less.

Depending on what your intended use is, it's a solid release, and you seen the edges? I enjoy occasionally running my finger along it.
>>
>>59752509
Normal work stuff, relatively demanding software in terms of memory but less so in cpu. So the reason I'm considering the 460 is because upgrading the ram is easier. I could just add a second 8gb stick instead of replacing the 4gb with 16 (in addition to the soldered 4gb).

Other than that I heard the 460s is really built better

Does anyone have any advice for debadging a Thinkpad, or at least tastefully obscuring the logos?

I removed the palm decal(?), and while I like it more than a logo I'm not the biggest fan. I was thinking of covering the exterior in some type of black tape or sticker.

I think trying to perfectly match the logos would look weird, so I'm thinking about just solid black lines, just big enough to obscure them.

I have black duct tape and electrical tape but think these would wear quickly and end up tattered and gross. Has anyone tried this or implemented something else that could help with my autism?
>>
>>59755162
You can get one of the chink palmrests without the logo. For the lid you'd probably have to cover it up, the carbon fiber vinyl wraps are pretty neat looking
>>
>>59755162
1.) Get a polystyrene sheet and cut to size/shape
2.) Modeling cement
3.) Putty to fill the inevitable gaps around the edges for a smooth finish
4.) Sand it.
5.) Sand it again.
6.) More sanding.
7.) Paint it. Rattle cans are good enough, assuming you get your paint from a model shop and not from a hardware store. You will never get an exact color match, so you'll have to paint the whole thing. Naturally, this means disassembling the computer.

So I found a local seller selling a T400 with a clean keyboard/touchpad (no signs of wear, no shiny keys), two official power chargerd, a 6-cell battery and a 9-cell battery (this one sealed), and the docking station, for 100$. With a 30-days warranty and the option to test it in person.

But I couldn't buy it because after making a few questions the seller went nuclear and acted very rude for no reason and said I now couldn't buy it.

What's the best thinkpad for a dual sociology and criminology major? For general purpose use word processing, google docs, research papers, etc. Able to have many active tabs open in browser and fluidly switch between for research purposes. Able to play HD video, decent battery life, nice keyboard, and durable quality (I tend to be hard on shit). Do like to watch movies and have an 8 TB HDD filled with anime and movies, but normally connect to TV.

Well, I might have made a somewhat retarded purchase.

I bought a t420 that has a cracked screen bezel, a cracked palm rest bezel, and a small mark on the screen for 115 dollars. I see some on ebay for the same price with a smaller hard drive (500 gb on the one I have) for the same price, but without windows installed. I could have easily installed windows myself, and it appears the parts that I could replace of the bezel would equal the price of one that wouldn't have those problems, but without the screen blemish.

The cracks I put epoxy on to make sure they don't spread, and the small spot is noticeable on the bottom part of the fingerprint windows and on black screens.

Is it worth it to replace this screen?

Hey guys,

My co-worker just gave me his "old work laptop" and I'm trying to figure out what the fuck it is, it says T440 under the screen but I cant find a proper model number anywhere and apparently all T440's have vastly different specs.

Can't check in Windows because the charger I ordered wont get here for another week.

It has a "core i7 vpro" sticker on it and looks like it came with windows 8 pro.

any ideas? or know where I can find a proper model number?

It'll cost you like $400-$500, you can get i5 or i7 models, even if it has shit ram you can always add more for like $30.

There are meme-HD and 1080p screens, that's the only thing you need to look out for. Or you can always replace the screen for, what, $70?

Reed the notebook check reviews, they are very detailed by some German. He says the 460p runs really hot, and the built quality is shit (people on the thinkpad Reddit also confirm this)

What you need is 8gb ram and SSD, a normal i5 will seamlessly handle anything not CPU intensive (rendering, games, simulations)

Personally have the 460 very happy with it. 460s is nicer but more expensive

Pic related is my current plan, get a monitor stand, open the T420 to 180° and put half under the stand, and use the external as the only display. I like the keyboard but don't need the screen. If anyone has thoughts or suggestions, let me know.

It's a couple generations newer. If you actually need performance out of it, it might suit you better I guess, though they're far from durable. Just have a thorough look for T420's and T430's, they should be out there. Edge models if anything seem to end up with people trying to sell them at similar prices just because they all fucking break and it's not apparent to them that the market is saturated since nobody is selling Edges.

So I just got an X220 from ebay, and I'm in love.
Only problem is, the upper-right corner of the lid seems to crack open whenever I open the lid (see pic related). I suppose this is because that's where every right-handed person will pull to open it, and it just happened with use.

It's trivial to click it back together, but it's a bit annoying having to either be really careful when opening the lid, or having to click it back every single time. Plus, I'm afraid the problem will only worsen with time.

Is it worth returning over this? I got a pretty sweet deal I think, £160 with an IPS and an i7, whereas almost every other listing had a TN and was a bit over £200, but it does come with only 4GB ram and a small HDD so I'm gonna be spending extra on upgrading that, and I'd be really disappointed if this fault led to the thing dying on me within a year or two. I want to keep it for a long time, since it's only for lightweight work anyway and won't become outdated for that any time soon.

So do you think it will hold up properly if I just carefully drip a couple drops of superglue on there to keep it together? Or should I try to find one that's in better condition? Besides that this one seems to have no other flaws - the battery moves side to side about 0.5-1mm but I don't think that should be a problem.

>>
>>59768854
Right, so I opened it up a bit more and it seems I found the culprit - the strip across the top of the back of the lid is broken off from the main body of the lid in that corner. Sorry for the highly blurry picture (stupid 2016 flagship phone can't properly focus on close-up shots), but you might be able to make out a small grey spot next to the red cable - that's a bit of unpainted, broken off plastic where the top strip is meant to connect. (You might be able to notice that said strip is also at a small angle to the lower body of the lid, which shouldn't be possible.)

>>59769017
As you can see in the picture, there is indeed a small screw.

So if I want to replace this, what should I buy? It looks a bit more involved than just the bezel.

Or superglue? It's on the outside of the lid frame, so if I'm careful it shouldn't got anywhere near the screen. But it's also a high-tension area (since it got broken in the first place), so I don't know how durable that would be. Or ask for a partial refund since this wasn't mentioned in the listing?

>>
>>59769195
I don't actually have stickers. Either way I can see exactly what's broken so I don't need to remove the bezel right now.

What would be your advice to fix this then? Can I just replace the part? I don't think searching for "that top part of the back of the lid, lenovo X220" will yeild much.

I'd really like some advice, as the laptop in general would be great if not for this.
>>
>>59769229
Few minutes. It isn't like I'm sitting around waiting for it to finish compiling stuff. It's mostly very large projects like webkit and firefox that is a problem for those old C2D chips. The time it takes for them to compile stuff is long enough for it to impact how you use your laptop.

Compiling firefox took about 2-3 hours on my W500. The same task takes about 20 minutes with my i5 4690. It takes longer to compile smaller utilities too, but the time it takes to compile them does not impact how I use my laptop. I let it run in the background and it's usually done when I'm finished using it. I also use distcc (with a machine running with a G3450), which makes a huge difference.

Hey anon posting from my x200 with glossy affs + other upgrades. It's a very nice screen desu. Shit vertical viewing angles but really nice horizontally. Colours are also v nice as someone that does colour work

It's a good upgrade but a word of warning! You need to get a x200 that has a CCFL backlit LCD (as opposed to LED) and there is NO way to determine this without stripping the whole thing. AFFS uses the same CCFL data cable and inverter board (which are absent on LED models). You can buy these too and put them in but it's a bit of a faff.

Luckily, I bought 2 broken x200s when I did this so I got one with CCFL and LED. Transplanted the LED to the shitter mobo, fixed it and sold it to pay for the screen + ssd haha

No experience with the t400 sadly

Sure anon

In a basic sense, your LCD screen (like your thinkpad screen, monitor etc) can be broken down into 2 components: The panel (technology that makes the pretty colours) and the backlighting (thing that makes the colours actually visible to your eyes)

The backlighting method determines what panel technologies can be used with the screen. There are 2 common backlighting technologies: CCFL and LED

CCFL uses cold cathode fluorescent tubes to light the screen. The panel technology that offers the best colors and viewing angles for CCFl backlit screens is AFFS

LED (which is much more common now) uses well...LEDS (no shit haha). The panel technology that offers the best colours and viewing angles for LED backlit screens is IPS.

CCFL screens need an inverter board to drive the backlighting lamp whereas LED screens do not need any other input.

CCFL data cables typically use ~30 pins for laptops and likewise LED data cables typically use ~40 so the two are not compatible (They will also vary hugely between models so an LED cable will not work with another screen in all likeliness)

As for peformance, there isn't really an argument whether AFFS or IPS is better. ~8 years ago choosing the best between AFFS and IPS panel would be fairly difficult to judge and would mostly come down to personal preference. Nowadays, LED is the king as everyone makes them ahead of CCFL (cheaper + cleaner) so IPS is your only real choice...unless your upgrading an old thinkpad haha

In that case, whatever you are prepared to settle for is fine. If you already have a CCFL screen, get a CCFL AFFS. If you have LED, get a LED IPS.

In most cases the choise is also made for you, e.g the x200 only has AFFS as a popular upgrade which requires the CCFL inverter board + data cable to work.

Hope that helps

What's the difference between "29++" and "44++" batteries?

As far as I've been able to gather the ++ are the 9-cell (as opposed to the + which are 6-cell), so they supposedly have the same capacity. Is one of them a newer or better version?
>>
>>59772787
Yeah may well just be a fucked key, cmos does also sound dodgy though
>>
>>59773014
well the secret way to power on a thinkpad is to remove the battery + CMOS battery and plug the power cable in, that's why I'm specifying I did that. I think the CMOS is fine, but I didn't consider it could be fucked.
>>
>>59772978
Ah ok, that clears it up. I was mostly confused because the way you worded it made it sound like it was worth getting CCFL just for an AFFS. Makes more sense now, thanks.
>>
>>59773061
Ah my bad, it's certainly better with the AFFS. I only meant it's worth trying to get a CCFL so you have the room to upgrade if you wish

It's me again. The ebay seller offered to knock off £10. The price I paid was £157.

Now if that deal was average, and now I need to spend another £25 getting a new lid cover and then spend time replacing that (which doesn't sound very easy), I'm probably gonna end up returning it (and being sad). On the other hand, if I got a nice deal already, then shelling out extra to get that fixed will just bring that down to an average deal, which I don't particularly mind.

What do you guys think?

sup tpg, i have a small problem and i need someone's help. i downloaded sharpkeys to remove the page up and page down keys from my x230 and i accidentally removed my qustion mark + forward dash key. could any of you PLEASE download sharpkeys and send me a screenshot of what is in there by default"question mark"
i remember there was a right control -> something in there, wich is the key i removed, if any of you could do that for me it would be geat, thx!
>>
>>59773038
On second thoughts, it's probably just the key haha

Hadn't read the rest of your post pls forgive
>>
>>59773147
also, that key is not the question mark + dash key, it is some sort of special key, i tried that already

That's a pretty nang deal for uk mate

Fixing the front bezel is chill as it's just a few screws and then snap it in but you will probably need to screw down the antenna screw
>>
>>59773287
Thing is it's the back "bezel" that needs fixing, aka, the entire back cover lid

I might just plop a small drop of superglue there for now though, because after looking again those cost like £40 which is way more than I want to spend on this after already having spent £230 with the extra ram and stuff

Thanks for the advice though.
>>
>>59773302
Yeah sorry I'm blind

That's definitely is a potential dealbreaker effort/expense if your not that comfortable doing it

Glue is a fair choice anon
>>
>>59773358
I'm completely inexperienced but I'd be quite comfortable learning how to do it, if the dang piece of plastic didn't cost 1/4 as much as the entire laptop.

The guy had a 6-month warranty that supposedly can let me ask him to repair it, if he gets grumpy I think I'll just take the deal and then see what I can do about it myself. Thanks for the advice man (unlike this faggot >>59773274)
>>
>>59773404
Also the hardware manual states the part number is 04W2185 but I see a ton of listings for "X220 lid cover 04W6895", does anybody know what the deal is with that? If I do purchase one, can I safely assume it's going to be compatible, and of adequate quality?

No problem, getting stock parts in the uk is an absolute cunt so I feel your pain.

Easiest way is to order a cheap dead one which is generally beyond a pain in the ass.

>>59773440
And yes, both of those are actually made for the x230 but fully compatible with the x220
>>
>>59773544
Sorry for being an idiot, but do I need to do it on a thinkpad? And do I need your exact model? Also can I do it on windows?

I have an X220 that's off right now, or if I can do it on my main computer that'd be more convenient
>>
I have a T520 with the 1600x900 screen, its a pretty poor looking panel overall. Im seeing that newer models have FHD ips screens

Is there a way to install one or would it be too painful and require way too much hacking up?

I'm not even sure if the x220 will work actually, but it is worth a shot. Thx for the help

I'll try the fix after I get back home
>>
>>59773703
Right... what do I actually need to do? Sharpkeys just shows blank by default, with options to add/edit/delete mappings.

Is it because I've got Windows 10? I know sharpkeys still works for remapping with 10, but officially it isn't supported. If that's the case and I'm not just being particularly dense today, then sorry for getting your hopes up.
>>
Are the T420 and X220 still the recommended models? Why buy the T420 over the T440?
>>
X230/T430 users, what version of GLSL are you supporting? under fedora i'm getting 3.3, is there support for 4.0+?
>>
>>59773813
On mine it showed this one default change, if yours doesn't have it your right control key is probably not remmaped

Took me a while to answer cuz I had no 4g while I was in the subway
>>
>>59773840
>Why buy the T420 over the T440?
because the T440 is garbage, you literally chose the worst newer thinkpad to compare a T420 to.
>>
T420 came today, and my old laptop hdd worked fine. Screen is shit like people say, but $100 for a working laptop is fantastic. Think the first upgrade I'll do is ram since it came with only 4gb. If I upgrade the screen what screen should I use?
>>
>>59774532

Hey guys I just upgraded to a x230, but this keyboard is lacking and I heard that you can switch/hack it for a good ole x220 keyboard. Anyone personally tried this? I am not afraid to flash bios if it's required.

The backlight will never work, the pin arrangement is different on an X220, this is why you have to stick a little bit of tape on the keyboard connector when you do a X220 into X230 swap - there's current on one of the pins intended for the backlight which will short out the X220 keyboard.
>>
>>59773641
Newer models (T540 etc onwards) will use eDP panels so yes they're a pain to get working. Like >>59773661 said there were compatible panels for the T520 in its contemporaries, though you want the W520 and W530 panels. (W510 is 16:10)
>>
>>59775248
None of the X2*0 models, you either get 1366x768 or 1920x1080 on the X240 onwards. For that exact resolution? Gen1 X1 Carbon offers it, and the X300/X301 isn't far off it.
>>
>>59776155
w510 is 16:9
>>
>>59776213
Fuck, you're right, sorry. I misrecalled it and then misread it with the maximum external resolution when I went to double check.
