At the speed at which data is crunched ECC stops errors that occur much, much more commonly than that. At least, for its intended purpose it does.

CPUs calculate billions of operations a second, even if it threw an error every 100 billion calculations thats still a non insignificant amount in a day (well in theory even 1 error is too many for mission critical hardware). ECC is utterly useless for 99% of plebs that inhabit /g/.

Its cheaper on ebay because like most things of this nature its often quite old and had significant use. Plus ECC ram tends to run at slower frequencies than non ECC ram. This is of course overlooking the fact you need 1) a chip that supports ECC (fuck you Intel) and 2) a board that supports it.

Its why piledriver and ryzen are interesting for the home server usage case as the desktop chips both support ECC - it was the desktop motherboards that didn't.
