Please explain to me why the FUCK do people get a trackpad for a DESKTOP when there's a fucking mouse

Macfags what the fuck.
>>
>>59755853
Aesthetics and it works well enough. Most work is done on a keyboard anyway.

Apple mice aren't designed for human hands.
>>
>>59755853
I wonder if it is easier to use than on a laptop. Also gestures are always nice to have.
>>
>>59755853

With a tiling widow manager I would prefer a trackpad for scrolling.
>>
>>59756128
What did Apple have against scroll wheels on a fucking mouse?
>>
>>59756128
Damn. At least the Pro Mouse and Mighty Mouse look tolerable in that lineup. Everything else doesn't look all too comfortable.
>>
>>59756191
While I enjoy shitting on Apple, the 360 degree scrolling ball thing on the Mighty Mouse is pretty nice actually.
>>
>>59756191
The Mighty Mouse has a scroll wheel (it's still shit)
>>
>>59756253
>>59756256
literally only one mouse that had some sort of a scroll wheel though.
>>
Ok, let me explain.

You have the average trackpad on a laptop. It has support for maybe 2 or 3 gestures. You can't do much on it so it automatically becomes shit by definition. It's just there to scroll through webpages maybe and that's it.

Then you have this fucking thing plus some software. You can set any single gesture you can think of to an action, right? Then instead of remembering a shortcut like ctrl+alt+e to open up some stupid fucking script that deletes all of your maki pictures, you can just swipe down with 4 fingers for the same action.

Now a mouse is always preferable for shit like graphic design and games and I understand that, anon. But the thing is, it generally takes me longer on a multimonitor setup to snap a window to the left side of my right monitor than just do a 3 finger gesture. It's just overall comfortable to use, and no I don't mean comfy like the fuckers around here.
>>
>>59756267
touch based scrolling is nicer though, it's so smooth.
>>
>>59756571
kill your self
>>
>>59755853
Trackpads are better for mice than everything except gaming because they have gestures.
>>
>>59756675
That's not an argument.
>>
>>59756793
than mice*
>>
>>59756793
Gestures are admittedly nice, but keyboard shortcuts are far more efficient.

I hope you macfags know the gestures do not work well on PC.
Which means you need to have a mac desktop for it to be of any significant use.
And to own a mac desktop, you must actually be a fucking retard.

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
THE WHITE PRO MOUSE WAS INTRODUCED IN 2003 ALONGSIDE THE IMAC G4.
>>
>>59756253
the ball on the "mighty" mouse was 4 times out of 5 broken on library macs.
>>
>>59756876
You don't need a mac desktop. You just need the OS.
>>
>>59756876
>And to own a mac desktop, you must actually be a fucking retard.
iMac + server is the masterrace way to compute. You've got a desktop that takes up as much space as your monitor would anyway and your server goes where your tower normally would.
>>
>>59757436
Not to mention if you ever really feel like gaymen or something you can toss a GPU in your server and use the iMac as a monitor
>>
>>59757463
One day people around here will realize that money still does get you everything.
>>

Damn thought I was immune from tech nostalgia.

Hours spent with that babby, this was years before I owned a PC myself. I remember my parents wouldn't get one until after 2000 because "y2k is going to kill them all its a bad investment".
>>
>>59757289
It doesn't get broken per se. But it gets dirty and needs to get cleaned up every now and then. Probably a result of having a rubber scroll ball.

Does liking Apple laptops make me a cuck?

The build quality is really great. Feels light but also like you could kill a man. Best trackpad and keyboard as well, but I've only ever had two laptops before this one.
>>
>>59757633
Not an argument
>>
>>59757683
to be honest, anyone ragging you for liking apple laptops is either poor or jealous or has never tried one. the build quality IS far superior.
>>
Eliminated stress on your wrist.
Assuming it's accurate and all that, I see it being pretty nice to have if all you do is shitpost on the internet

>>
>>59755853
I use both. Trackpad is much nicer if you're mostly just scrolling and don't need pointer precision (eg: most of the time coding or browsing the web).

Proper mouse is better if you need the accuracy for doing a UI layout or other serious shit. Or if you're doing a lot of drag and drop shit which is a pain on trackpads.

>>59756130
being fucking huge compared to a laptop trackpad helps
>>
>>59755853
I used to use both a trackpad and normal mouse

gestures ont he trackpad were really cool
>>
>>59756191
You don't need a physical wheel, you scroll by dragging two fingers along the top of the mouse. Works quite well.
>>
>>59756128

>>
>>59756128
The Pro Mouse and Magic Trackpad are both great pointing devices.

I just got a macbook pro with touchbar at my new job as a sysadmin for IBM and I've never used a mac before, always hated them (for their overpriced bullshit antics and inferior specs) but I must admit I am enjoying it a lot. Especially the gesture scrolling, amazing. However I did end up getting a windows mouse anyways so I can right click when at a desk. While in bed however the gestures are quite amazing.

This was ideal on the old ones with displayport pass-through but the later ones removed that feature so you'd be doing something shittier like the steam in-home streaming

Still if single-player is your thing, that's probably fine too.

I've got a 6700K ITX rig sitting on the desk next to it which would happily drive a 27" 1440p screen for gaymen so that could let me save some space next time I rearrange the room
>>
>>59755853
Gestures and better scrolling. Obviously it lacks the precision of a mouse but depending on what you do, you won't notice it while the other shit is pretty nice.

Don't make the mistake to compare Applel trackpads with the shit you're used to in Windows.
>>
>>59760476
>>59760558
On further reading, looks like I was mostly right. For Mid-2011 and onwards it requires thunderbutt which basically means other macs only. Earlier models only required a mini displayport connection which is easy now that everything uses it or full displayport
>>
>>59755853
For text-editing work, or other types of work where you're moving between the mouse and keyboard frequently, trackpads are more efficient than mice, because they stay put-- you don't have to go fishing for it every time you want to use it. Also, it's easier on the wrist.
>>
>>59756793

It doesn't matter if it works or if it makes sense. Apple is all about the branding. They love doing all sorts of ass backwards shit; so when you sit down at the computer, you realize it's a mac because it's not doing what you expect. 'Oh, the mouse wheel is inverted. Must be a mac!' 'Oh, I need to awkwardly use the asshole command key for basic commands. Must be a mac! Oh, the interface is bloated with transition effects and drop shadows. Must be a mac!'

>>

>>
I used the Magic Trackpad for a few years. Mostly because of BetterTouchTool. Now I tend to use a mouse simply because I play one old game that still works on macOS and it's pointless having both a mouse and trackpad on my desk.
>>

that was a good year for macs in general
>>
ive never used an external trackapd like op's pic but the macbook trackpads (at least before that force touch shit) feel pretty good
>>
I'll be honest, I used to handle my daily tasks with the magic trackpad, but nowadays I'm mostly using my mouse. The mouse is a better tool if you need to do actual work, while the trackpad is just more comfortable.
>>
>>59756130
But why use gestures when you have keyboard shortcuts, I'll admit three finger swipe to switch desktops is useful, but I only use it when my hand is already on the trackpad and I don't plan on moving the hand to the keyboard.
>>
Have both mouse and trackpad.
feels good.
>>
>>59756476
Check out spectacle, God tier window management with keyboard shortcuts.
>>
It is better for general productivity work since it lets you have many more gestures available at your fingertips. Some that I use:

- 2 finger pinch for zooming photos or web content (useful during meetings and such)
- 3 finger swipe forward/back for browser forward/back
- 4 finger swipe left/right for workspaces (including VMs as this gesture isn't captured by the VM, very useful)
- 4 finger swipe up/down for window management (though I use a fake tiling WM anyway - Amethyst)
- 5 finger pinch for desktop access

If you need pixel perfect accuracy like for games or possibly Photoshop then it might not be for you, but otherwise there's a reason it's so popular.
>>
>>59766212
Yep it's pretty good. I got a license for bettertouchtool and I've been using that though, has more features.
>>
>>59756476
Keyboard shortcuts are still faster than gestures and mice are still faster at pointing.

Yes, you do mean comfy like everyone else here. Go fuck yourself for being self conscious about memes instead of just saying the truth about how you feel
>>
Please explain to me why the FUCK do people get a mouse for a DESKTOP when there's a fucking keyboard

GUIfags what the fuck.
>>
Before I switched to Apple I used to have the same feeling of confusion as OP. But after having used a trackpad on a MacBook Air for almost a year now, it's a lot more comfortable than a mouse. It's easier to use, more convenient, and oftentimes, having a mouse requires more effort. Basically it just makes sense to have a trackpad for the desktop if you have a Mac. Otherwise, a mouse is good.
>>
>>59766213
or you could, like, use keyboard shortcuts
>>
>>59766372
Morons like you who keep suggesting the use of keyboard shortcuts aren't even thinking it through. How the fuck do you compare a keyboard shortcut versus a simple pinch or swipe gesture when it comes to things like zooming in (smoothly) and swiping left and right with fully visual feedback? Gestures are far superior. I'm sure you use a mouse with your computer, otherwise you'd have a ThinkPad which I once did. If keyboard shortcuts are all you need, then why the fuck do you need a mouse? For finer movements and special actions. A Magic trackpad takes that to the next level.
>>
>>59766427
i will blow your mind right now by letting you know i also have a mousewheel that i use
whoa
>>
>>59766442
Mousewheels are imprecise and feel worse compared to sliding a finger up and down a trackpad. Yeah faggot I have a mousewheel on my gaming mouse which I use on my desktop PC. I'm not an Apple cuck but I use their devices.
>>
>>59766213
You mean... I need to use three fingers instead of one to go back in my browser? Wtf
>>
>>59766490
It's simpler than you make it sound

3 fingers placed on the trackpad and swiping left

versus

pushing a single finger all the way up to a Back button, and either lifting that finger up to do a soft touch to press, or pressing down on the trackpad while your finger is still on it to click the Back button

On a Mac there is no Backspace key. So you can't press a button to go back.
>>
>>59766523
Or, you know, just use a mouse with more buttons. My G700 with autohotkey can do so much, i almost never touch the keyboard.
>>
