Why didn't it take off?

Why didn't it take off?

Didn't have enough thrust.
>>
>>59755656
It was vaporware.
Nobody could cheaply create panels that wouldn't try to sudoku themselves dramatically faster than even OLED.
>>
>>59755656
patent wankery

It's another form of CRT (also known as shit)

This was the major public news story angle.

This is what was really going on behind the scenes.
It was better for the stakeholders to act like it was some nasty legal squabble rather than admit that the fundamental technology wasn't viable without at least a shit ton more R&D.

Basic idea:
- SED/FED operate off the principle that electrons can can be ejected at low voltages from cathodes that are sharp down to near the molecular level.
- Low V electrons = *much* lower power plasma screens

Challenges:
- When the inner display gap isn't a perfect vacuum, those electrons hit stray gas molecules that than get ionized.
- Ions in the gap erode display internals, particularly the electrodes and their very small active surfaces.
- Eroded emitter tips/edges gradually get rounder and become unable to work at low voltages.
- Eroded material itself floats around in the decreasing vacuum waiting to get ionized.
- Even if you started with a perfect vacuum, the phosphors naturally ablate from the electrons.

With OLED, the dimming of the blue-emitting molecules starts fast and slows down with display age and can be somewhat compensated for by cranking up output. With SED/FED, deterioration continually accelerates with time until the display starts radically dimming then dies pretty much completely.

Marketable SED/FED would need electrode materials and manufacturing processes that were simultaneously cheap/easy to etch in the factory while being extremely durable in the field, and nobody has found a way yet.

thank you for the thorough explanation.
rare to see that on 4chan these days.

This is the first time I've seen a sensible explanation and I've been here before fermi. Every time SED/FED was mentioned, retards start spewing shit like muh "LCD jew cartel" undermined them.
