you liking this site? so EPICCC!! trump won!
damnit. unity has been shaping out really nice (it makes the gnome stack usable OOTB) and I just switched to it from Xfce about 6 months ago. well, come 18.04 it'll time to switch back to Xfce. at-least i have all my old configs for that environment backed up.
>>59756514
It will likely go the way of GNOME2 and get forked like MATE
Unity was the only DE that was somewhat acceptable with minimal to no tinkering. The rest look absolutely awful out of the box, niggers.
>>59756563
it's not like they can't add their own extensions by default to Gnome 3.
I mean, that's what they did with Gnome 2 8 years ago.
>>59756514
Canonical might end up recreating Unity using GNOME3 as a basis, they like to have their own distinct look and feel for their OS.
>>59756388
Ubuntu GNOME will be the new Ubuntu.
>>59755091
So they dropped the tablet DE? Nice.
>>59756726
>>59756544
i hope either one of you is right. a global menubar just makes sense on gnome and gnome-based DEs. the launcher is fantastic (except for resource consumption under certain scopes like for clementine and other music apps). and the keyboard-driven stuff in unity is perfect (hud and the great default keyboard shortcuts were my main reasons for switching to unity). if KDE can perfect their resurrected global menu and implement something as useful as hud, or budgie incorporates a global menu, those would be my main DEs to consider if unity falls hard to the wayside. otherwise it's xfce again all the way.
>>59755535

time for elementary OS, right guys?

This. The whole HUD and global menu thing is amazing and it drives me nuts that I can't have it on my Windows work computer.
>switch to linux full time last year
>have to learn all the quirks in unity since Canonical had to be all FU and go do their own thing instead of using a mainstream DE
>get comfortable with it
>know how to set everything up just right
>get comfortable using a terminal and typing in commands manually
>nearly a year later
>see this
what the fuck, what was the point of this dumb shit to begin with
they should have just kept gnome or cinnamon, now I have to learn all these hassles all over again
>niggas dont know about appmenu for gtk2/3
>>59757820
I think they will use Gnome shell as a basis for future unity versions.
The keyboard shortcuts, the global bar, HUD and great screen real estate are top tier, they won't ditch that for a turd like gnome shell.
>>59757861
if I could use gnome-shell panel with i3, i would switch, but alas. I cant. the window decorations in gnome are fucking terrible. HUGE ASS BARS ON THE TOP OF EVERY FUCKING WINDOW, WASTING SCREEN REAL ESTATE.
>>59755091
Maybe gnome can finally get those file picker thumbnails
This sucks, I actually like Unity and hate Gnome.
>>59757939
Well at least Ubuntu will tweak gnome so that it's not dog shit out of the box. That's what they should have done in 2011.
>>59755127
>implying more than 1 dev gives a shit about Unity
Can anyone tell me why Ubuntu doesn't just let you pick from a handful of DEs during install, like Debian does? It doesn't need to be that many options but at least GNOME, MATE, and maybe xfce or something. It can have a default/suggested one (GNOME).
This would address so many complaints and is easy.

>>59755159
When Ubuntu is dead Solus can rise to its rightful place as the official Linux desktop
hopefully they take gnome and make it look good by default.
>>59758653
Ubuntu is supposed to be easy to understand for everybody. Anyone who understands the difference between Unity and XFCE should install it themselves because the target audience would just be confused. At least I think that's the idea. At that point you're probably better off using Mint or some other distro that's more your style.
>>59756863
Gnome and all of its pros with a proper global menu is literally all I wanted. Based.
>>59758053
>Well at least Ubuntu will tweak gnome so that it's not dog shit out of the box
Default gnome really is dog shit. I have no idea what those "designers" are doing to GNOME.
Once it's fully altered and configured it's pretty good though

You can take it like this: "Ubuntu GNOME" will become "Ubuntu"
>>59755215
hahaha can't believe these people actually exist
YOTLD happened a decade ago, everything since then has just been improvements.
>b-but it's still hard to use
Yeah, and that's the way it should be. Just look at ubuntu's or mint's support forum, and see how many clueless retards feel they are entitled to your free time because they are "starting out with linux".
If they can't figure out shit themselves, they will never contribute to the community, and simply soak up the valuable time of talented contributors.
Fuck new users and fuck ubuntu. If someone can't be assed to do the basic research themselves, they can feel free to stick with whatever they already have.

It'll also probably result in increased extension development for Gnome, which is nice.
Well, fuck. I was enjoying the HUD search.
>>59761995
ubuntu have more recent packages in its LTS.
Debian is still targeting to be "stable".
