>Canonical has announced via Mark Shuttleworth they are ending their development of the Unity 8 desktop environment and will be switching back to GNOME desktop by Ubuntu 18.04.
>Presumably this also means the end of Mir development too, with GNOME focusing on Wayland. Additionally, Ubuntu is ending development of their phone and convergence initiatives.
Press S to spit on grave.
Sauce or GTFO
This might be one of the best things to happen to Ubuntu in years

This is actually great news. I liked unity 8, but it was basically a more gnomeified unity. Now Canonical and RH will be contributing to one desktop.
This is awesome.

VICTORIOUS
>implying Unity wasn't already GNOME3 with extensions
Unity wasn't that bad, plus it's not like the DE was the main attraction for people to use Ubuntu.

Me too. I guess we can still fork it.
Shame that this news comes almost immediately after I try the "move the launcher to the bottom" thing and find out I like Unity a lot better this way.

Guess it's time to hop on the Fedora train. Is the next version shipping with 3.24? Gnome's dual gpu support is very attractive
