I bought a fake Speedy from Torobravo a while ago and beflroe long one of the pusher fell out and the watch stopped. The circlip had fallen onto the flywheel and jammed it still so I fixed that. About a year later I was winding the watch and the crown sheared off in my fingers....
I fucking loved that watch though. MAde me want the real thing so much more but it was a damn good substitute.
I still can't face forking out £1500 for a real speedy.
The fake costs like £190. You can see the dials are too spaced out.

>Nothing special
Incorrect. Rolex is one of the absolute best quality production watchmakers in existence, and hasn't stopped giving a fuck about movement engineering in the post-quartz era, unlike most of the other Swiss production watch manufacturers.

Rolex has even recently introduced a +/- 2 SPD accuracy rating on their 3235 movements.

Why are fakes such bad quality?

The answer might be obvious "because they're fake duh!".

But if you take a second to think about it, the price you're paying should give you a decent quality watch.

For example that anon was talking about his £190 speedy fake breaking. But you can pay £100 for an Alpha Paul Newman homage and have non of those issues.

So yeah, why are homages better quality than fakes?
>>
>>59756370
They have no reputation to maintain. You don't know who made the fake unless you know you're buying directly from the manufacturer

If you own that many watches, and change between them that often that keeping them wound is a priority, then sure, grab one, but be warned, cheap ones tend to make noise, which is inbearable to sleep in the same room with, then there's the concern about magnetising the watches.
The only ones I can say off the top of my head that are quality, are WOLF winders. But they are by no means cheap.
>>
>>59757431
They are, a turn and regular movement wearing an automatic should be enough to get it restarted and rewound. Given anything below $600 is probably gaining or losing 10-20 seconds a day you have to reset them anyway I just don't see the point of winders.
>>
How did people cope in the days before accurate time was displayed on computers and phones? Before the invention of caesium fountains and before quartz?

Not everyone could afford rolexes, and cheaper watches can gain or lose 30 seconds a day.

So by the end of the week your watch could be minutes out with you non the wiser.

>Given anything below $600 is probably gaining or losing 10-20 seconds a day

My SARB017 seems to only lose 2 seconds a day if worn. But will lose 10 seconds a day if not. I've tested storing it in multiple positions and it loses 10 seconds in every position.

Therefore it must be the fact that wearing it keeps it fully wound constantly. That was the idea of me getting a winder.

There were church bells.

I stayed at a hotel next to a church that rang out every single quarter throughout day and night. Extra bongs were rang on half hours. And on every hour they really went to town.

Around here you also had a time signal on the radio and even a phone number you could call to get the time ("miss watch", in translation).

It didn't 100% matter, even these days you can be 2 or 3 minutes out and it doesn't really matter. As long as everyone around you agreed that that was roughly what the time was you were OK.

Frankly even these days precise time is mostly for computers, people don't care that much. People seem to work to roughly 5 minute estimates.

How do watches get corroded hands? Aren't hands made from stainless steel which shouldn't corrode?

Also most watches are air tight so shouldn't let any moist air in.
>>
>>59757972
Yeah it's a shame, I just wanted one on a fabric strap as a jolly summer watch but had to go down the soviet collectibles 'rare' beaten up route, I'd much rather just have bought a factory one because it being soviet does nothing for me, it's just a cute watch. Sadly I think Raketa is dead and gone so there are no new ones being made.

You know the cycle of wrestling? First you like it as a kid, then you realize it's fake and hate it, then you realize it's actually cool and like it again - for different reasons.
Rolex is kind of like that. Normies like it because it's popular. When you start to learn about watches, you dismiss it (because it's popular). And when you really know your stuff and realize how they work, you respect them again. They make great watches, like it or not.

I have, it just looks flat and boring.

That and it's a chronograph, I stopped being impressed by watches having lots of dials when I turned 18, it's just cluttered and ugly.

I'm in the market for a £50 and really struggling to find something that fits my requirements. They are as follows:
* Distinctive and quirky - Styling that either looks different from almost all other watches or a vintage style.
* Small size - I'm looking for 40mm or smaller.
* Strap - Leather.
* Functions - No requirements for anything above telling the time.
Any suggestions for a pedantic prick like me? I want understated but distinctive.

I said it looks flat, not that it is. As in the dial is just a boring black fisher price plastic that looks very cheap and unremarkable. Genuinely amazes me how popular it is every time I see it in a shop.

I guess if you like chronographs it's the one to get, but if you regularly wear a chronograps it suggests to me that you haven't been into watches for very long and are trying too hard to wear something showy. It's certainly overrated and these days very overpriced because of all the price hikes.

Are reps in the $300 range better than something like the SARB033/35?

No.

For me, 99% of watches just look completely lacking in any soul and that includes most Seikos. Exceptions are the SARB017 and the Alien watch and many Grand Seikos that are way too overpriced for me to care about.
Oris look too 90s, Omega brand has been tarnished for me by middle managers wearing the Seamaster and thinking they're James Bond.
Rolex scream NOTICE ME.
Tag again is 90s trash except some of their Carreras.
Hamilton havea nice aesthetic for the most part and don't try too hard.
Those cheap Casios are done to death and people seem to liek them because they're $10 which is ridiculous. They look shit.

My favourite watch is the Stowa Flieger. Iconic and timeless.

Not in the movement, but watches at that price aren't the sorts of things you keep for more than 5 years anyway. They're holdovers until you can buy something proper so to be honest you may as well just buy a replica since the movements are almost as good and they look a lot better.

May sound like a blasphemy but get a rep instead. I have this and it still runs fine 20 months down the road.

Every word of what I said is true. If he has a problem with owning a fake watch and lying to the world fair enough, but a good replica of an easy to copy watch will be basically indistinguishable from a real one to anyone except an AD and have a miyota or some other decent movement in it.

>The kind of person who buys fake watches
>Being attracted by the oversized, colourful, bold noveau Richemont normie magnet designs of IWC
Story checks out.
>>
>>59766521
But the easy to copy watches are shitters and you should be embarrassed to own, much less being such a desperately aspirational pleb that you throw money away on garbage fakes of overpriced shitters.

Still posting muh new japshit. I just now realized that as a "low-end" JDM watch from the mid 70's, this doesn't have a flat mineral crystal, but an inner-domed one.

Seiko really are another level. I can't believe I've been missing out on these for so long.

How do I buy a Tisell watch?
>>
>>59766544
The only watches that replicas find notoriously hard to copy are chronographs because the spacing of all the various dials is almost impossible to get right and have the movement work. Anything else if you buy from a good seller will be well enough done that most watch fans won't be able to tell, let alone your average nobody on the street.
>>
>>59766570
Direct from Tisell

I fucking chinkshit Parnis is better made than a fake.

Good for you.
>>
>>59766578
Good for you explicitly admitting that your only interest in watches is a desperately aspirational desire to status signal with, based purely on the false marketing driven "prestige" accorded to various brands, and that you have no actual interest in watches otherwise.

You are the prototypical fake watch buyer.
