Guys I need my new chinkpad set up for a 4 year phd, and I don't want to reconfigure everythin in the middle of it so I will actually have to use win10 (at least at some point)

The plus side is I have an EDU version key which has more features than enterprise but no cortana thankfully. So what do I need to do to get rid of all the spyware, adware etc. Is there a way to make the start menu (ads popup menu) usable? is there a way to disable the metro thing altogether?

Windows 7 is easy to use right out-of-the-box. You don't need to go into a "Settings app" and change shit so that Micro$oft stops spying on you. It just works right after installing. No bullshit. Controllable updates. Windows Aero. Looks much better. Looks professional. Is used by professionals. Etc.

Literally just "upgraded" to W10 on two legit W7 systems (using the assistive technologies way), mostly because I was afraid they'd shut it off.
It's way less shit than /g/ led me to expect, and you can disable pretty much all of the botnet except the very basic telemetry.
But the way it babies you is definitely very anoying. You don't get any detailed settings until you delve very deep, it's just fucking ON-OFF tablet sliders with short explanations for retards.
Everything mostly just works like you'd expect, the learning curve is even shorter than XP to 7.

Not having a company collect your data is better than having a company collect your data, because it can get into the wrong hands, and can be used against you. Also, you may have no problem with their current shit, but it's not good if operating system manufacturers start making more and more botnet-y OSes. And even if we ignore privacy, the fact that you can't turn telemetry off is still a fundamental problem, because an OS that doesn't let you turn off non-essential components provides an inferior user experience.
