What old looking environments are still in development and usable today.
There is FVWM and Windowmaker that still works really well.
CDE is still kicking around in some form I think

This looks really comfy actually
icewm
>>59740930
Xfce
>>59741129
looks pretty good
>>59740930
the whole plan9port environment is really old.
But rio is a shitty window manager and there are no decorations or buttons, so it doesn't really look like anything
>>59740952
Indeed it is, and it's Free Software nowadays: https://sourceforge.net/p/cdesktopenv/wiki/Home/
Haven't used it in a long time, but it was very productive.

There's a good guide on compiling CDE on Debian that also works on Ubuntu:

>>59741787
it still looks like it's from 1990s.
Why is Win so shit?
>>59742983
the irony in this thread is palpable
>>59740952
Sysadmin?
>>59740952
yes, you can.
>>59742983
Bullshit. If it still looked like it's from the 90s it would be great and efficient.
>>59743413
1990s hardware and software mostly sucked, let's not get preteen in here
>>59743449
90s hardware sucks by today's standards but even now the Windows 98 UI is better than any commercial OS UI on the market.
>>59743494
Windows 98 was full of bloatware and you know it. Even the desktop was a web page for fuck's sake.
>>59743560
Except this is not how Windows 98 looked like on any sane user's computer. More like this. If you manage to fuck up your desktop that bad you would of course be better off with Windows 10 because Windows 10 looks like a huge mess right from the first start up.
>>59743591
It looked even worse on the average person's computer, considering every OEM put their own bloatware and spyware in on top of Microsoft's bloatware. Even the screenshot you posted shows an entire fucking web browser rendering the contents of each explorer window. Were you actually alive when Windows 98 was around or are you just spouting memes you read on /g/?
>>59743653
>calling Windows Explorer a web browser
Isn't it past your bed time?
>>59745428
isn't it past yours? windows explorer functioned like a brain-dead web browser in 98
>>59745444
Oh fuck off, a browser is bigger than windows 98 at this point.
Browser.
>>59743591
And you could uninstall IE cancer with 3rd party tools.
>>59745464
You didn't even use Win98 and ActiveDesktop then, how underage
Anyone like classic mac os design? How do you get that look?
>>59745532
- Xfce ot MATE with an appropriate theme and iconset
- topmenu-gtk
- a giant dildo
>>59745571
ebin
>>59745513
Actually, my first computer was a XT, but I am sure that is underage also, granpa.
sup
>>59745711
literally lxde
>>59745744
nope
>>59741618
rio isn't actually rio
it's really crippled without plan 9's display server where programs can take over terminal windows
I use twm sometimes at work, and other times switch to olwm/olvwm.
I end up using awesome wm for most of my productivity.
