I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

In some quarters, it's politically correct to call the Linux operating system the
“GNU/Linux operating system.” The problem with “Linux” is that there is no
completely correct way to name it because it was written by many different people
in a vast, distributed development effort. Technically speaking, Linux is the
name of the operating system's kernel, nothing more. The kernel is very important
of course, since it makes the operating system go, but it's not enough to form a
complete operating system.
Enter Richard Stallman, the genius-philosopher who founded the Free Software
movement, started the Free Software Foundation, formed the GNU Project, wrote
the first version of the GNU C Compiler (gcc), created the GNU General Public
License (the GPL), etc., etc., etc. He insists that you call it “GNU/Linux” to properly
reflect the contributions of the GNU Project. While the GNU Project predates
the Linux kernel, and the project's contributions are extremely deserving of recogxix
nition, placing them in the name is unfair to everyone else who made significant
contributions. Besides, I think “Linux/GNU” would be more technically accurate
since the kernel boots first and everything else runs on top of it.
In popular usage, “Linux” refers to the kernel and all the other free and open
source software found in the typical Linux distribution; that is, the entire Linux
ecosystem, not just the GNU components. The operating system marketplace
seems to prefer one-word names such as DOS, Windows, macOS, Solaris, Irix,
AIX. I have chosen to use the popular format. If, however, you prefer to use
“GNU/Linux” instead, please perform a mental search-and-replace while reading
this book. I won't mind.

Linus did not create an operating system. You can go download the Linux kernel source, compile it, and try and run that as your operating system if you'd like. Also, Linus has never said this... try uname -a if you're curious.
>>
>>59743813
Exactly this is why it's called GNU as named in 84 by RMS. Linux is a kernel, originally named Freax 91 by Linus Torvalds.

powershell is still pretty clunky, same as anything else related to MS powershell is only useful because of how much shit it plugs into, specifically PS5 and nano server 2016.

They've kind of forced people to use it by enabling things like AD recycle bin through PS alone. I'd never use it for general scripting stuff like cleaning up reports automatically but for admin shit in windows it is pretty useful

Not him but the no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.

The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.

I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?

FUCK THAT SHIT.
>>
>>59746774
I appreciate that driver support is not great but why would you even use an OS if your gpu isn't supported by it. You're complaining about a performance issue that is not present if you had compatible hardware
>>
>>59742778
Well, i personally don't have a problem with proprietary software and in fact i use a lot on my linux setup but a program being open source also means a lot of transparency and anyone being able to check any part of the code for any reason is by itself already a big deterrent for both introducing backdoors or for looking for vulnerabilities because there's not guarantee they'll keep working a long time if the project is active enough. Also the fact it is developed in the open allows me and other people to participate actively either by reporting bugs, talking with the developers and testing early versions at any point, in short it's very comfy for enthusiasts. On top of that there's no restrictions on how you can use the program as the final user, the restrictions are for contributors and people that may try to take possession of the rights of the program, so the license generally guarantees the program will keep being open for everyone.

Just saying a program being open source is a big perk, you know.

Ok, it doesn't count for you and that is fine but there's other people that may prefer linux and wine reduces a lot the dependency on windows, dual booting just for some games and needing to use an operative system you don't even like is pretty nasty IMO. If your best argument is "that doesn't count" i guess my argument was not that bad.
