Why isn't this more popular?

Web programming has changed where single page apps are starting to dominate the landscape.

Because of this, the server side of things deals mainly with APIs.

If you are just making API's there are much, much better languages that can scale.

Also, NodeJS ate it's lunch (it's mainly this).

It's Japanese. Like Chainer. So only Japanese use it
>>
I started a project on Ruby this year. There have been 2-3 minor updates completely breaking multiple of the most popular gems already. I would not use it for anything I need to maintain for years.
>>

Ruby is popular in configuration management and other sysadmin tools.
>>
Implicit returns and adopting Perls MTOWTDI philosophy means it can be confusing to read code you haven't written if you're not already a Ruby monk.
Which is why Python, despite being objectively worse in every way, has seen more development, better package management, and maintenance.

People moved on to things like node, then spas became super popular.

Aside from that there is little incentive to move existing apps from java, c#, or php due to cost/time/training investment.
>>
>>59736796
I still use Ruby a lot vis-a-vis Chef. There are good applications out there it just doesn't scale well.
>>
>>59736796
I honestly quite like the syntax when I decided to give it a fair chance but all of the cons above have made me decide against "seriously" using it.
>>
It's a pretty mature language by now. Most of the Rails hipsters jumped on the Node.js bandwagon and left forever.

Now Ruby's quite comfy. I would change a few things if I could start from scratch, like adding a proper module/library system, but what language is perfect?

>it can be confusing to read ruby code if you don't know the ruby language

Who would've guessed, you pajeet...
>>
>>59736796
I wish it was more popular. The satisfaction of writing something in ruby is just much higher than most other languages. It does seems weird sometimes though, which I assumed was the main reason for it's relative unpopularity.

Neck yourself

That's literally what it means dumbass. Don't tell me you know Ruby if you can't tell what value is being returned when you read code.
>>
>>59737832
What exactly do you find weird

I often guess things and turn out to be right
Ruby just seems to choose all the right words for me
>>
>>59736796
I think it's the fact that the ecosystem was fucked by a mix of Ruby on Rails and Ruby's principle of MTOWTDI.

I fucking hate python, but it has an advantage in maturity and ease-of-use over ruby stuff. People would probably use stuff like SciPy/NumPy for scientific computation, even if SciRuby turns out to be just as good eventually. Shit, I think Ruby and Perl shit all over Python as far as system administration and security stuff goes, but a lot of people I know working in that would still rather use Python.

>>59736796
Too many languages

>>59736796
Because python is way better in every way.
