There is literally nothing wrong with ads. If you don't have the self control to refrain from impulse buying whatever some ad is selling then you have no business being at a computer anyways, brainlet.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Oh and you knew it right after it came out? Or maybe you had to read up on the shit, and waste time?

Also there is the whole principles thing. It's a fucking expensive software and still forces you to disable ads? Supporting this development is fucking insane. At least Google throws tons of nice free shit for using their customers as lab rats for analytics. MS wants you to pay them to display ads to you.

Pretty much this. Face it, any real power user would have to change a few configs on a fresh install of any OS. When I started seeing taking off the prompts and ads as just another part of that, I went back to using Windows just fine. Crying about this won't change anything because guess what: normies honestly don't care about ads.

See an X-Men movie advert on the lockscreen? "Hey, I need to remember to buy tickets for the premiere!"

If you're not a freetard autist, parasite trying to hide the fact that are perfectly able to work or pedophile trying to hide illegal shit then Windows 10 is quite honestly the best iteration of Windows yet. Anyone that says otherwise is just looking for (You)s hiding behind le botnet maymay.

Pic related. Left is Computer Configuration and right is User Configuration.
I believe that some of them are redundant.
For example "Do not allow web search" is probably useless when "Don't search the web or display web results in Search" is enabled.
Same for "Allow search and Cortana to use location".
"Do not use diagnostic data for tailored experiences" is probably covered by "Turn off all Windows spotlight features" but it's a new policy added in Creators update and the technet article hasn't been updated yet so I don't know.

Now that we're all here, is there any way at all to make windows 10 into a usable OS? I have a license for the EDU version.

I got my chinkpad which I'll need for a PhD (4 years) and want to install windows 7 but support ends before my PhD, and I would if possible not configure it again during the middle of it. Has anyone gotten rid of all the botnet, telemetry functions etc.?

Otherwise should I just install win 7 anyways and pray a botnet-free windows OS will be possible before 2020?
>>
>>59737876
Four posts above.
>>
>>59737778
i swear if microshill let people pay $100 per year of windows 7 extended support I would use it forever. But of course they need to ditch their best OS ever for this abomination full of adware, which is in itself just an ad for their surface department.
>>
>>59735998
What's the matter ? Don't you want to support the only worth OS in the market ?
>>
>>59737778
What makes 7 better than 10? The Windows stock apps are pretty sweet. Mail, Groove, etc. all look nice, they feel light and fast and get what they're meant to do done. Window management is great: snapped windows respond to resizing. The notification center and sidebar is a nice little all-in-one for quick settings.

Everything worked out of the box for me, drivers are still regularly updated on their own, etc. Though I do use it on mostly new machines.

The only time I've seen Windows 10 run a bit wonky is on old hardware and in that case, no one will say that Microsoft didn't fuck up badly with the whole surprise-update-against-your-will-even-if-we-said-your-hardware-didn't-support-it shit.

Another thing to note is that Windows 10 is fantastic on a 2-in-1. It's the only reason I still boot into it as opposed to Fedora. MS just needs to stop dicking around and add SwiftKey in the store.

I honestly can't wait till the whole explorer/control panel juxtaposition with the newer stuff is gone desu senpai.

>Another thing to note is that Windows 10 is fantastic on a 2-in-1
it's literally the ONLY reason windows 10 exists. It's also the reason why MS is pushing so hard to get everything on windows 10 so they can shill their failing surface department. Remember when suddenly everyone could upgrade for free? remember how suddenly windows 7 auto-updates to windows 10 overnight unless you disabled it carefully? rememer how even PEOPLE WHO PIRATED WINDOWS COULD GET 10 FOR FREE. That is how hard they shilled to get everyone on board.

If you don't own a tablet or 2-in-1 it's just an assrape unless you carefully block all telemetry, metro tiles, ads, "news articles" (also ads) etc.

Windows 7 is just pure perfection in terms of PC/notebook comfyness. I even have a touch screen laptop and win7 is still comfier.

Why would you do that? Also, what news articles? The one Cortana spits out? Then just disable Cortana.

Don't care about that desu, it certainly has nothing over Google's where I use their services basically 24/7. Google literally knows if I did the run it scheduled for me or not so me moping about W10's telemetry would just be hypocritical.
