Get an Android phone and stick in a big SD card. You can get a midrange phone and a 256 GB MicroSD for less than half the price of an iPhone. Putting files on it and getting them off again is easier too since you can access it like a USB drive.

Get a high end Android phone. There are more games for cheaper, and you can get emulators straight from the Play Store.

Do you just need a communication device?

Yes, this is all good for the standard user who wants a safe and easy to use device to check email, browse Facebook, send Snapshats, etc. And Apple has done a good job delivering what the standard user wants. I'm not arguing against that.

But we're not standard users here, are we? This is a board for tech nerds. We do things on our phones that standard users don't, and most of us probably do less of the things that standard users do.

Really? On Android file managers are really quite nice. It's still more difficult than on PC to deal with folders containing thousands of files, but you generally don't have that on a phone anyway. Browsing remote ssh/sftp, FTP and CIFS is pretty simple too, so you can realistically edit and copy files to/from a PC or web host, right on the phone.

Again, no it's not as easy as on a PC, but it's not as difficult as you make it out to be. And it's saved my ass a number of times when I had to make some change on the go and I didn't have my laptop with me.

Piracy varies -- often you get pretty easy to find stuff on hosts that don't make you jump through hoops. Mediafire for instance. Just ignore the fake download buttons, download, unzip and done. Other times you get those pages that hijack and trap you unless you have an ad blocker app. And sometimes all you can find is those shitty hosts that make a simple 100 MB download take an hour, with no resume function. Torrents work acceptably with changing and unstable connections though.

As for emulation, how well it works depends on the game and how the emulator deals with controllers. Or you can get a bluetooth controller -- nice ones either hold the phone above them or stick onto the ends a little like a Nintendo Switch.

My LG G6. I still feel a little bit insecure about spending so much on a phone that has a freshly outdated processor, but the actual user experience leaves little to be desired in terms of performance.
