I'm not sure who you're trying to kid there.

When I use my laptop at home I need:

a) a USB 3.0 type A for my external HDD
b) ideally a DisplayPort output in order to connect to a monitor. Since that's rare I use a HDMI which does the job.
c) ethernet port so I can connect to my NAS and not spend ages waiting for files to copy

I guess a) could be solved with a hub but that's one extra thing to drag along. When it comes to b) you can just look at the amount of screens that are sold with a USB input. There are none. They all have two or four of VGA/DP/HDMI/DVI. And when it comes to c), there are no wireless standards that come close to wired ethernet.

To me the MacBook is like a car with no trunk and no glove box and no stereo and no other essential features but that's supposedly alright because it's a fashion statement of some kind.

I paid $140 for my thinkpad x230. It has a touch screen, pen input, swivel screen, has two hard drives, supports more than 16GB of RAM, is actually upgrade-able, can attach external batteries for 20+ hours on a charge, and with a modified bios can run the current version of OS X better than a macbook, though why you'd want to is a mystery.

People who use their laptops for things that actually matter expect things like data recovery after a motherboard fails. Good luck with that.
