My father died of lung cancer, it wasn't pretty to watch. He'd been a smoker for most of his life, and even though my mother begged him to stop he didn't listen. I had to watch him take his last breath in a hospital ward next to ninety year old dinosaurs. He was forty six.

I started smoking from stress, I know, it sounds stupid but it was traumatic and I really didn't know what else to do. It reminded me of him, and I missed him terribly. i prefer not to because i want to read my code later. the bitwise stuff isn't that weird, but what gets me more than the variable naming is the lack of comments about expected data formats and why you're doing the transforms to said data. someone with a debugger and a few test cases could quickly figure out what the code is doing and why so "job security" is kind of a misnomer.
