It was possible to make "linux distributions" with the Linux kernel very quickly because the GNU system was as good as ready when it came along. This was thanks to RMS and essentials like gcc, binutils, glibc, emacs and so on. Now look at all the software which uses the GPL license. Who wrote that license? Linus didn't come up with it, that was - again RMS.
