Portable tech used to be so much more interesting pre-iPhone.

There were shitloads of wacky designs on PDA:s and phones, now most things are just almost identical slates. There were several OS:s, now there are only a few.

Camera is incidental, therefore your question is irrelevant. The point is it is not a "smartphone", it's just a, y'know, basic phone -- for receiving calls. But you already know that, you pedantic slut.

Just look at photos for Roger McNamee to see how staid and botnet phones have become. He lead the final push to save Palm and failed. During this process he went from Woz-tier neckbeard in Hawaiian shirts to VC shill to desperate shareholders to CNBC commentator.

3G feature phones were pretty good. Those first 1-2 gen Androids from HTC had shitty ergonomics and battery life. I feel like the entire non-Apply ecosystem SHAT BRIXXXXXX when the iPhone sold so well that they immediately lowered the price. The second after they realized the phone was a hit they realized they could lower the price by harvesting user data and taking a 30% commission on any paid download.
>>
>>59696184
There's jewggle's new OS
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Fuchsia

Based on a microkernel you can build it right now and run it if you wanted. Android will be abandonware soon.

Sadly phones will remain a stupid Iphone clone because all the money is in cloning whatever Apple does, so l337 shit like flip phones with batteries that last for 2 weeks aren't being made unless you live in India/Africa and can still buy one.
>>
>>59696184
The way phones went with smartphones is honestly depressing as fuck.
>pretty much every phone out there is just a boring touch screen slab, designs from Blackberry and the occasional ruggedized smartphone (though the later barely manage to be different) being the exception
>you have to get a smartphone with good community support and install a custom ROM if you want security updates and don't want it to be loaded with spyware, and the list of smartphones with good community support has been shrinking
>the software available is shit and falls short of things I've come to expect from software on desktops 10+ years ago (how fucking hard is it to get a fucking mobile version of noscript?)
>smartphones have also mostly killed off MP3 players and have also been seriously cutting into the sales of handheld consoles (the PS Vita and 3DS combined haven't sold as much as the GBA in the same amount of time, and the GBA was already competing with the PSP and DS this many years in), I wouldn't be surprised if the Nintendo Switch ends up being the last handheld console
>>
>>59699009
It is kind of disgusting.

Not only that, but despite the shortbacks of software and all, many people still mostly care about minor differences in specs. Back in the day hardware at least actually mattered (though benchmarks actually didn't), so it made some sense to wank over that, but now... Most of the phones do exactly the same things, all of them could be improved a lot with better software.

Even if you want to play mobile games, most of them are made to work with anything but the shittiest phones from years ago. The high end phones are fancy toys at this point; there used to be a clear distinction between a $500 phone and a $200 phone, but that is kind of gone.

This isn't to say that mobile tech hasn't gotten better, though. Many applications are legitimately convenient and it is nice to have decent cameras and whatnot.
The app part is due to people learning to use technology rather than technology evolving: we could've had most of the good services on 2005 Symbian phones with no prob if we'd made them.

>>59696184
It's a shitty time right now, sure we all have pretty much all the tech we could want in our phones, but there is virtually no variety as you say. It seems whenever Apple enters a market that market becomes cancer in due course.

What we need is modular smartphones, until that happens we're stuck with this uniform bullshit. Anyone who spends more than $200 dollars in the year 2017 is a fucking moron, they all do the same shit, as long as it's got a QC SoC and a battery that lasts at least 24 hours that's all you need to do literally anything you could want to do on a modern smartphone. Modular smartphones will revolutionize the game but until then it's all fucked.

>Portable tech used to be so much more interesting pre-iPhone.

so much nostalgia blindness and revisionist history here. Pre-iphone the portable devices world was absolutely riddled with proprietary formats and ports for anything and everything, and you weren't allowed in to even sneak a peak.

Iphone brought the costumer demand that all devices should be at least as usable as it was, that you could just plug it in to a computer and be able to interact with it. You think itunes is bad, previous phones would not even allow the port to be connected to a computer because fuck you, oh you want music in it? then buy it from our store.

Oh you filmed a video with our shitty camera? let me put it in a codec so shitty that it will barely be reproduce able on your PC, don't even think about editing that shit. without iphone creation of a brand new market we wouldn't have had android and the good that it provides with its "openness" of formats. but don't claim things were good or better pre iphone, it is blind nostalgia
>>
>>59702434
>oh you want music in it? then buy it from our store.
pre-iphone, the canonical solution here would be "buy a separate device for that purpose."

This is wrong, lots of phones back then would plug in via USB as a simple storage device. Most of them didn't ship with a cable for it, but those were almost always sold separately for a few dollaridoos.

They were interesting but devices now are way more usable. High resolution IPS screens, capacitive touchscreens with multitouch, intuitive UI, fast hardware, good battery life.

Now here is a device that is both interesting and usable. Sadly it seems like the only way to sell phones is to make whatever everyone else makes.

Before smartphones we had a bunch of different devices that each served a specific purpose extremely well. Now there's one device that attempts to do absolutely everything somewhat decently. It's like if we replaced all food with Nutripasteā„¢.

Smartphone games: Shit.
Smartphone GPS: Shit.
Smartphone messaging: Shit
Smartphone browsers: Shit.

I think MP3 players are the only thing smartphones have done a decent job of replacing, except not really because of battery life that can never not be a problem now.

You can still get a dedicated GPS and such, but most of that stuff has moved to being cheap and flimsy because it's the only way to stay in the market now. For a lot of this stuff you need to track down second hand units because it's all been discontinued.
>>
>>59704732
>I think MP3 players are the only thing smartphones have done a decent job of replacing, except not really because of battery life that can never not be a problem now.
Touch screens are shit for MP3 players because you actually have to take out your device and look at it to change songs. As for phones in general being bad replacements for MP3 players, someone I knew got a phone that could be used as an MP3 player in the mid 2000s but later gave up on it and went back to using their old MP3 player and I think their reason was battery life. I also knew someone who carried an extra battery for their phone because they could use up the first before the end of the day with how much they texted.
>>
>>59704873

You're right about the touch screen thing. They won their war on physical buttons so long ago that I forgot how nice it was to be able to just reach into your pocket and hit the 'next track' button or 'play/pause'. If you have your phone hooked up to a stereo you can use the buttons on that, but otherwise it's shit.
>>
>>59696500
it is a smartphone you fucking moron
>>
>>59704873
>Touch screens are shit for MP3 players because you actually have to take out your device and look at it to change songs.
thank you. finally someone who speaks it out loud. I was under the impression I was the only one who was dissatisfied with the nowadays phones' buttons.
>>
>>59705147

lol what buttons? Soon there won't even be volume buttons. You'll need to unlock your phone just to adjust it. I'm surprised most phones still have lock buttons when double tap to wake is an excuse not to have them.

Something else that's shit, remember when many MP3 players would let you listen to FM radio? Whatever happened to that?
>>
>>59705147
Keyboards on smartphones are even worse. Today if you want a smartphone with a physical keyboard your choices are either a Blackberry, an old Droid 4 from 2012 it you want community support/custom ROMs (support might be winding down now as Lineage OS recently stopped doing weekly builds for it), or an old design that no longer has any manufacturer or community support.
>>
>>59696184
And all the OSes were shit. None of these phones even had a proper browser to start with. Also why even make applications beside shitty J2ME stuff when the task of adapting it to say 10 manufacturer systems and all their seperate devices not even having unified frameworks is simply impossible... But I agree though that shrinking down the market to effectively 2 systems is shit. 3 or 4 would encourage more competition.
>>
>>59699009
Where the fuck is my god damn nonscript for my phone! I'm with you there my good man! The more I look at how bullshit each ecosystem is the more I hate my phone. There is no reason my phone can't be as powerful as my desktop in terms of usability and functionality as my PC but if it was the advertisements and spyware wouldn't work nearly as well as they do now!
>>
>>59705309
Esp if you live in a place where it rains 20 days of the month. One drop on a touchscreen and impossible to do anything esp "Swipe up to unlock screen!" will never work
>>
>>59696184
>There were shitloads of wacky designs on PDA:s and phones
This just made things terrible, FYI. Everything was a gimmicky poorly functioning mess.

This is even worse than nostalgia for home computers of the 80's because at least back then there were some normal-ish standards.
>>
>>59705309
>Today if you want a smartphone with a physical keyboard your choices are either a Blackberry
Not so fast. BlackBerry announced last year that they will no longer be making phones and instead will just start packaging their software with other companies' phones, they have one more phone in the works that they'll release this year and that will be the end of it.
>>
>>59704732
I don't really understand what you mean about Smartphone browsing. Of course it's not better than using a laptop or desktop, or even a tablet, but the phones before that were even fucking worse. Do you remember having to use the internet on a flip phone and being charged by the minute for it? That shit needed to go.

>>59704998
>>59704873
You don't necessarily need to take out your phone. There are wired headsets with remotes that let you skip and rewind tracks.
>>
>>59702434
I said more interesting, not necessarily better. Proprietary cables were kinda annoying, but otherwise (smart)phones weren't locked down or anything.

>would not even allow the port to be connected to a computer because fuck you, oh you want music in it? then buy it from our store.
I never had a phone like that..? But reading the replies, seems to be some US only thing. I know the US didn't really get the best of old smartphones (in Europe we laughed at the first iPhone the US got - it had such ridiculously bad specs and so on compared to our phones!). The US, even now, seems so shitty when it comes to mobile tech. Your contracts are expensive, horrible and abusive and locked, etc.

I don't honestly remember what formats the cameras produced, but I always transferred them to my PC just fine and uploaded them if I wanted. I think it was very normal kind of MPEG-4 by the time the cameras produced anything I'd actually want to use.

Most of my pre-iPhone phones had, indeed proprietary cables - but the later ones had minIUSB. But they always came with the devices, anyway, so I didn't care much, and generally I just took the memory card out and moved the files to that. The phones were not particularly locked down, though I do think that Android is even better if you root / use custom ROM.
>>
>>59705309
I literally just ordered a 10-year-old feature phone just so I could get a horizontal physical keyboard.
