IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

New to /tpg/ or looking for purchasing advice? (hint: use the advice request template, it makes life easier)
http://pastebin.com/JiXZ2f0t

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

What's the best OS for the X61 Tablet?
Windows 10 has great tablet support but is really slow with 2 GiB of ram.

Also I don't really want to upgrade the hardware, compatible Ram would cost more than I payed for the entire machine in mint condition, the only thing that sucks is the battery, which gives me around 40-60 minutes of use

Alright, so my T530 won't start up. Won't get into BIOS, fan doesn't spin up, nothing.
Before that happened i installed ubuntu and before starting it up for the first time i opened the laptop to check a connector.

Anyone know other solutions or is my thinkpad bricked for good ?

Not sure about that, i was checking the connector for the touchpad and fingerprint sensor and everything looked fine, no broken headers or anything. How much longer will these last (not performance-wise, but before the motherboard fails)?
>>

>What's the best OS for the X61 Tablet?
A few small batches of various X4x models, for god knows what reason, came from the factory with thermal epoxy holding the heatsink fan to cpu/gpu. If you have one of those, you're shit out of luck.

>>
>>59695953
Integrated graphics models have more than a decade lifespan in general, My T43 worked until 2015 when I couldn't find a good fan upgrade and temps were insufficient, My T60p is still 100% functional, the hinges are just really loose. The *20 and *30 series are still really sturdy, I see no reason why they can't last until 2022 if not longer. The quad cores in the W series (and can be fit in the T series) are still really competitive.

I have used Thinkpads for a while now and I want to try Dell next. Any recommendations? My current Thinkpad is T430 with i7 and Nvidia GPU. It has enough power to run Overwatch with low settings so I would like a similar Dell, but this time with a good IPS screen. Is there any Dells that are like T430? I heard you can swap it with a X250 tho.
and yea forgot about that, I've been using wireless mouses since forever, I don't even know how a touchpad is supposed to feel like anymore.
>>
>>59702645
I wouldn't be too trusting of quoted battery life, resellers won't have consistent measurements and it comes down to how worn the battery is, which can be pretty variable unless it's a refurb where you get a fresh one. The X240 will get better battery life just on the basis that it has a more efficient CPU. Also replacing the touchpad with one with proper trackpoint buttons is possible, an X250 one is ~$30 I think though you have to swap it out yourself.

Granted, they're still not equivocal in most regards, the X230 will probably be better built, while the X240 can end up better for specs on paper but you'll have to spend plenty and fuck around a bit to get to that point.

The coreboot works with Windows 7, 8, 10.

I have uploaded my build, if anyone want to try.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mq1e2a54vv03 ... iRE9qJbwQa

Usage instruction: https://www.coreboot.org/Board:lenovo/t420

There are several roms with different MAC addresses (gbe.bin). The reason for having different MAC addresses is if you have several laptops plugged into the same router, you need different MAC addresses.

Some features:

1. Support Sandybridge and Ivybridge CPUs (I tested i7-3xxx QM) (by changing the vgabios name code)
2. No whitelist you can use any wireless card
3. Unlock RAM speed to 1866 (due to chipset limit 1866 is the highest)
4. Works with Windows 7,8,10, linux (Seabios)
5. Works for both t420 (with/without Nvdia graphics card)
6. Updated vgabios to newest 2170 version

The 200nits is the lowest option with 1366x768 resolution. No one actually buys this except companies who don't care for eye cancer in their employees. The 1080p option gets to a solid 300nits.

I had a x220 and relatively recently switched to t450. The only con is the arrangement of buttons on a keyboard, a lot of them is missing and it looks like a mediocre laptop keyboard. But the positive thing is that the keyboard is sturdier and actually more responsive than the old one. The old one kind of bended if you pressed hard while the new one feels as glued to the fingers and doesn't flex.
The rest is the same, laptops are as tough as they used to be, I even once drunkenly managed to stand on my laptop for a minute to prove they are sturdy as hell. All the ports are there and + they now have two batteries that can last >10 hours (one inside, on outside)

T450 being shit is a meme, only the keyboard arrangement is kind of mediocre everything else is just as good or even better
>>
Is the P50 a good deal or is it overpriced? Everything I see is at least $1,000+.

Guys, I think I fried my x220 keyboard by cleaning it with 90% isopropyl alcohol. I cleaned it, plugged it in, and only the trackpoint works. Where can I find a cheap replacement keyboard? The one on Amazon is like $50.
>>
>>59705122
The old ones were easier to service as well, but at least the new ones are not impossible to open. In my opinion the T430 struck the perfect balance, hardware buttons for volume and the old modular case. Even if the keys you use 98% of the time are better, I still get triggered whenever I go to adjust screen brightness, volume, turn WiFi off, etc.

about to pull the trigger on a t430s that's hopefully gonna be useful for the next 3.5 years.
planning to upgrade the

>display to a 1080p ips one
>ssd
>maybe keyboard to a x20 one cux I prefer the layout.
>maybe a quadcore i7 in the future
>16gb of ram

anything else

also, what are the main differences between the t430 and the t430s
????
>>
>>59706836
The main difference is that the T430s is slightly thinner and comes with less battery options so you will be stuck with batteries that limit you to 3 or 4 hours of battery life.
>>
>>59707043
>you will be stuck with batteries that limit you to 3 or 4 hours of battery life.
and that is, when they're at 100% capacity. after two years of average wear you'll get like 90 minutes.
>>
>>59707368
Yep. BUT the T430s got a 1080p option. The solution is obvious: Put the 1080p IPS panel from the T430s into a T430 and you got the best possible 30 series machine.
>>
>>59707043
>>59707368
>and comes with less battery options so you will be stuck with batteries that limit you to 3 or 4 hours of battery life.

fuck I was expecting at least 6 hours.
>>
>>59707403
Not with the s version. Nowadays it's different, the new s versions support all battery options but back in the day you could only use 3 cell batteries.
>>
>>59707400
scrolling quickly through the wiki, IIRC, the choice of ips displays on the normal t430 is more limited due to its bigger size and it's harder to do the swap, also flickering issues.

am I wrong?
>>
>>59707417
I have heard of the flickering issues but swapping the display isn't hard. The fact that it's slightly bigger doesn't make it any harder to maintain.

I pick on it with my finger usually or sometimes just have a razor blade, screw driver or some sort of dental poker if I feel like being a piece of shit.

Goo gone works on the glue residue, but leave a sort of shiny/slippery texture afterwards.
Once I used Goof Off Pro at the shop but it is a pretty powerful smelling chemical

However, the plastic below it may be darker than the rest of the laptop from UV light
>>

remove them when the device is new, otherwise buy a *new* palm rest (warehouse stock, not taken from a used laptop)

as far as removing them goes just use a thin dull metal shim or something and remove the glue with a damp cloth

Decent, better than my X61T in battery life, a little bit better in performance.

i3 model is surprisingly good, granted I put 6GB RAM and a spare SATA II SSD into it and it does web browsing just fine. I mostly have it as like a backup laptop that stays in my car and work. mSATA support is sweet.

Why should I buy a used Thinkpad over its equivalent used Latitude or Elitebook?
>>
So I'm using a 15.6 inch ASUS laptop with an i7-6700 and a GTX960M, it's breddy gud for most things. However, there are some things that could be improved:

- Battery life: if I can't find a suitable outlet, I'm limited to about 2-3 hours even with normal loads (using an IDE/text editor and web browser).
- Weight: I don't mind carrying it around in my bag, but when sitting somewhere and I want to move over/show someone something on my screen/basically carry it around, it's rather unwieldy.
- Screen quality: the panel is a really shitty 1080p TN, I can't ever get the gamma configured right and sometimes I think it's just screwed beyond rescue. Heck, my home "gaymeer" 144Hz, 3D-compatible monitor - basically the epitome of not caring about colour quality - is better than the laptop's screen.
- Trackpad - it's not a clit mouse, what more to say. I actually find myself bringing my mouse along most of the time.

Can a thinkpad solve my problems? In particular, I'd be surprised if I could really get a good-quality display on one, but if that's possible, I'd be absolutely ecstatic.

My ideal vision:
>13-inch
>4:3
>either IPS or good quality TN
>enough processing power for intensive daily use, think full-featured IDE + browser with ~50 tabs + video chat - should all be comfortably handled at once
>optionally, decent graphics for low-tier games. Think Civilisation (V) on lowest settings, or Crusader Kings II, maybe XCOM (the 2012 one) at lowest settings. Could do without.
>several hours battery life - as a minimum, I'd like to at least be able to use it on two 2-hour lectures in one day without having to recharge it
>ability to add an SSD (and keep an HDD) would be great

Given these rather specific requirements, would a thinkpad suit me? Any pointers for specific directions to look at? They're being shilled so much here that I thought I'd give them a try, but if I need to compromise too much I'll probably hold off on getting a second laptop.

What should I get: X220 or T420

I intend to use this machine on the go occasionally, but mainly
as another computer to the side of my desktop to browse the web,
and as a in-bed machine. I already have a quite beefy desktop.

I like how small and light the x220 is, but don't like that the msata is limited to sata 2 (would like to have 2 drives) and no ultrabay.

What's this meme I keep seeing about **30 and higher models being chink shit or whatever? I'm thinking of getting an X-series - is there any merit (besides price) to getting an X220 as opposed to a newer one?

Speaking of, can I actually run a modern web browser and watch 1080p videos with its processor? I don't need to do particularly intensive shit, and I understand it's a 6 year old laptop with a focus on portability, but I'd rather avoid having to keep the limits of my CPU in mind all the time whenever I'm doing anything in my day-to-day usage.

How is the X220 if your main use case is editing text? I use emacs with no toolbars or anything, so I can use the whole screen for the text editor. I'm used to 1366x768.

Otherwise I might watch YouTube videos and play some roguelike games. I plan on using Gentoo.
>>
>>59723056
I used that exact setup professionally for a few years. Works all right. But if you come from a higher resolution it will feel like looking through a screen door.
>>
How well does windows 7 run on an elite book 2560P? as soon as i got it I switched over to ubuntu but I need windows software atm.
>>
>>59722136
you can buy whatever new chink stuff you want, just don't expect X220 levels of durability and serviceability.
>>
>>59723205
Alright. Seems like exactly what I need then - durable, portable, great battery life, just enough processing power for what I want to do.

One last question though - is it possible to replace the screen with a FHD one? The 1366x768 resolution is really the only thing preventing it from being perfect for me.
>>

Fresh OS install, setting up uMatrix. Ignore this post.
>>
>>59721905
The benefit of 2x8GB would be dual channel. RAM would be faster. But today's RAM is fast anyways. Go for the 1x16GB option and if you one day feel the need put in another 16GB module.
>>
>>59722787
2x8 gives you more memory bandwidth and gpu bandwidth according to meme benchmarks but with 1x16 you still have one slot left for adding 1x16 later for maximum 32gb memeing.

I dont think you can do that but there's a IPS one available. if you really really need FHD you're better off with a T530/T520
>>
>>59723368
Too big

I already have a 15.6 inch gaymeeng laptop, I'm specifically looking for something small and portable.

I'll just settle for the smaller resolution then. I can pretend it gives me longer battery life to fight off buyer's remorse later. Though you say this as if I'll have to buy the IPS screen separately - is it particularly uncommon on used units?
>>
>>59689884

>>
>>59723459
>is it particularly uncommon on used units?
not quite. or you can look into X220t, all of them have IPS panels.
>>
>>59723266
There is no practical way of getting a 1080p screen on older X series laptops. The display connector they use for the internal screen is LVSD which only supports up to 1600x900 (I think) so the only way to connect a 1080p display would be major modifications to use the built in DisplayPort for that. I think it has been done but it's complicated.

I'll look into them - but are they as durable as the normal ones? I'd rather have a solid laptop (possibly with a screen I replaced myself) than a meme tablet whose hinge will break or touchscreen will die or something.
>>
>>59723763
They meet the same specifications as the normal laptops do with one exception. The tablet versions have only one hinge in the center of the screen that lets the whole lid rotate. That hinge is not quite as durable as the hinges on the regular laptops are.
>>
>>59723763
ofcourse a regular X220 is better if you cant see yourself using a convertible, I was merely pointing out their existence in case you ever feel the need to draw well endowed anthropomorphic anime characters and you don't own the necessary hardware.

Hi.

Dealing with a breakup. Planning a single backpack trip to Europe in a bit, but I'll need a lightweight system to stay connected and keep backups of photos and stuff. Not really gaming but just keeping in touch and knowing my system is secure.

Location: Canada
- Lightweight is key
- Minimum 14" screen size
- i-series minimum
- If possible, max 16GB installable would be really nice
- If possible, dedi GPU within the system, otherwise Intel is fine.

Budget max 350-450 probably.

Will be using GNU/Linux.

My other consideration is a chromebook and installing Linux, if anyone has any recommendations for that, let me know thanks.

The battery on the X1C is not switchable (technically it is but it involves opening up the laptop) and the build quality is complete crap. It's got a lot of keyboard flex which isn't as prominent in the T or X series. Concerning the T450, it's just worlds ahead of the T440 in terms of build quality. The 40 series is known as one of the worst Lenovo has ever produced so stay away from these if possible. Also the T series is closer to what you're looking for when it comes to performance because the X1C doesn't pack a dGPU.

Piss easy will probably take you 10 minutes at best. That being said be careful with adding the msata SSD and or removing the 4g card. The screws there strip extremely easily. Make sure you use the appropriate size Phillips head and be careful.

No, the post **20 series thinkpads have dropped extremely in quality
to the point that they should no longer be called thinkpads.
I am saddened by the amount of gook shillposters lenovo sends
to these threads to convice people to get scammed out of their money
by buying new thinkpads.

I fell for the nu-thinkpad meme and I got what I deserved. I dropped my T460
from waist height, and the screen completely broke off, the case cracked apart,
and the battery wont stay in place anymore. The nu-thinkpads are no better than
any other chink laptop they sell to dumbfuck consumers.

Do the X1 carbon display mod, it'll be more than worth it.

I went through university with a bulky 15" and you'll get used to it pretty quickly, though I can't blame you for not wanting to try.

I don't see why you'd want to upgrade to a T430 though, it's basically a T420 with a different CPU. If you want something thin, get an X220 or X230. If you want a good resolution, just swap in a new screen. If you want both in the same laptop, you'll probably be better off looking at newer models.
>>
If a significant number of people in these threads buy, sell, and refurbish used thinkpads, wouldn't it make sense for them to interact commercially with one another?
>>
>>59727111
The one I pulled the trigger on has an NVIDIA card with 1GB VRAM, on top of the more up to date processor and better screen.

The jump in processor, resolution, and graphics card (for potential openGL programming) are worth the $250 to me, not to mention that I can't reasonably drop more than that on a laptop right now.
