I have a Nexus 6P, but if I had a Pixel I wouldn't regret that either. Samsung's software is horrendous, their phones are expensive as hell if you don't get them from a carrier, and my carrier locks bootloaders so you're stuck with their AIDS software.

My only complaint about my G6 is that they put the volume buttons on the left side. I'm used to having the power button be on the back of the phone after a few hours of use, but it's so inconvenient to have to re adjust my phone in my hand to change the volume because I'm not ET.
>>
>>59680199
The one thing I've experienced on big screen phones that is annoying as fuck, is that the larger screen means the more times you need to recharge your phone. My last phone before I got my galaxy s7 edge was the LG V10 and that thing sucked battery like it was no one's business. I found myself having to charge my phone about 3 times a and I don't even use it that much to play games on a daily basis, it would drain just by being in my pocket. When I got the Samsung galaxy s7 edge I was amazed on how this phone lasted me a whole day without needing to charge once! And that is with the high performance module enabled I would trade better battery life over a phanlet screen any day now!
>>
rounded corners, no bezel to hold the phone by, and especially curved screen edges are the dumbest phone memes. plus it's 2017 and touchwiz still somehow manages to slow down phones after a year, and lg is still Loops Good, so...

>>
>>59684430
...S7 Edge looks much much better than S8 and it has a physical button with some small bezels.
>>
>>59684423
Samsung tries harder to use better tech than Apple, and before you bring up the CPU the S8 has the best LTE modem available right now, AMOLED is more expensive to make than LCD, they made a headphone jack that is water resistant, they use UFS which is better than nvme in mobile devices at least and their phones actually have good reception.
>>

The Apple iPhone 7 Plus with TouchID doesn't have this problem.
>>
>>59684523
>S8 has the best LTE modem available right now
Samsung's own Shannon modem, which the international SKU has, is certainly behind Qualcomm and probably behind Intel's.

if you buy a carrier-unlocked S8 in Europe you are prolly left out of VoLTE because that would need carrier-specific modem firmware only available for the carrier-branded versions.
>>
>>59682390
Rear camera is godly, the amount of options you have is Unreal for a smartphone. I came from the g3 so I'm a few generations behind but I could not be happier. I'm actually surprised by the amount of torture my OPO has been able to withstand in the last two years. Not only do I drop it at least a couple times a week, but I still haven't had any problems with it (except the software, though it's easily fixed with LineageOS). The only thing that sucks about mine is the atrocious battery life. When I first got this phone (on Android 4.4) the battery life was godly, and I'd frequently hit 6 hours of screen-on time. Now it's down to 3 hours, which I'm guessing is due to the battery aging.

I am running marshmallow and will get nougat soon, I mean what app can I not run on my G4 that I can on a pixel? What does the pixel do besides have better resolution (i don't care my res is fine) and i guess better battery life (my battery life is not an issue and a better camera (non issue for me)

What benefit would I get by carrying around a pixel over a G4? Maybe there are some that I have over looked

I am running one of the latest OSes and have never had trouble running any app or issues with reception

I bet most people buy them just to have the best phone without thinking about what the benefits really are for the average user

Unless you're a PHONE GAMURR what are the benefits for even the power user?

They could make the software better and work going backwards, they dont give a shit to and it makes them no money. hence forced obsolescence with software updates.

We've already seen this with laptops where people are still using laptops from 6 years ago comfortably and using desktops that are even older than that.

It's basically consumerism at its core combined with very little innovation and oligopolies or duopolies controlling the markets
>>
>>59703284
Who fucking cares what it looks like
Are you a girl?

Be more pissed that you got memed on with "muh pixel density" on a 5 inch screen that's 2 feet from your face and "muh USB-C" to the tune of $800 just so you could get more recent Google updates and not have oligopoly carrier shitware preinstalled
>>
>>59703403
>Unless you're a PHONE GAMURR what are the benefits for even the power user?

I agree that for a phone power gamer there could be a difference, but you are spending $1000 vs $175 to play video games, on a phone.....

There may be other benefits I dont know about such as being able to run enterprise type business software that I dont know about

otherwise it's got to be 2 groups of people, one who does not know what specs mean and just wants the newest phone and is paying for it over several years and does not care, and people who really think they need the phone and that it's worth it and have a justification that may or may not hold up because I can't think of one

I mean i guess if you had millions of dollars and you gave no fucks about price it would be an upgrade in terms of the screen and camera but not for anyone for whom budget is a consideration

There's no benefit to most of this new hardware, be glad we live in a consumerist shithole though because for the most part we'll be able to pick up more used crap in 5 years and keep it for another 10 at the rate things are going with people upgrading needlessly and constantly

I think the thing is in the 90s and early 2000s you would be upgrading from like win 95 to win 90 and from 16mb of ram to 128, it was the difference between being able to run word and winamp at the same time, and not being able to do that.

People still have that mentality, that computers only last 2 or 3 years and if you don't upgrade you are missing out on new practical capabilities

> we'll be able to pick up more used crap in 5 years and keep it for another 10 at the rate things are going with people upgrading needlessly and constantly
hyperbole.

using a 15 year old laptop now is pretty sadomasochistic. in 2002 you had usually 256MB RAM, even Lubuntu will be hard pressed to work well on that and that's not even talking about using any browser.

also PC market peaked years ago and no one is upgrading anymore except gamers.
in actual fact, lots of people just have a smartphone as their sole internet device, especially poor people that only have mobile broadband.
>>
>>59703776
>using a 15 year old laptop now is pretty sadomasochistic. in 2002 you had usually 256MB RAM, even Lubuntu will be hard pressed to work well on that and that's not even talking about using any browser.

he is saying, wait 5 years to buy a medium range laptop then use it for 10 years (the way things are going) in other words in 5 years a mediocre laptop will last you 10 years, he's not saying to use a 15 year old laptop

and he's probably right, you can do just fine with a 7 year old laptop right now if you upgrade to an SSD with more ram
>>
>>59703797
>if you upgrade to an SSD with more ram
how's that not upgrading?
>>

It is upgrading but just your HD and RAM, I expect to do a HD and RAM upgrade over the lifecycle of any computer

SSDs and Ram are cheap as fuck when compared to a new midrange laptop whose specs you would be emulating

fwiw a 2010 macbook pro could have been purchased with 8gb of ram and a 256gb SSD and still be going plenty strong with no upgrades

>2010 macbook pro could have been purchased with 8gb of ram and a 256gb SSD
you would have payed a hefty premium for going absolute high-end.
prolly not cost-effective to buying midrange in shorter intervals.

also 7 years sounds cherry-picked as that's exactly the last macbook pro that still got the latest macOS and Apple's Intel transition was done.

>still be going plenty strong with no upgrades
nope, battery will be totally depleted and not last very long.
having no integrated 5 GHz WiFi can also be a cumber-stone.
>>
>>59703833
>just your HD and RAM
missing necessary new battery, otherwise that laptop will not be portable at all

>SSDs and Ram are cheap as fuck
you are lucky that we stayed with SATA (DDR3) for so long.
a few years older and your laptop would still have IDE (DDR2) and you wouldn't be able to upgrade for cheap
>>
>>59704038

I am currently using a 5 year old laptop I paid 700$ for and have upgraded only the SSD which cost 200$, I am running 8gb of ram.

How long do you think modern computers should last? 2 years?

point being 5-7 year old laptops are going strong with minor upgrades, that did not used to be the case

Someday a laptop could very well be expected to last 10 years

Same thing with cell phones, today a well picked $200 cell phone has the same capabilities as an 800$ cell, you get a prettier screen but there are no non game programs you can run on a super high end cell phone vs a good low end phone

if all you want to do is text and make calls and browse the web and kik and a few other things, there is no benefit to a high end phone

just like a new 15' macbook pro is a $2700 facebook/4chan/email/microsoft office machine

nomies are paying for wicked overkill based on what they actually need because they think their 2 year old laptop/smarphone is woefully out of date because reasons

that's the wrong question. longevity and modularity are no free lunches.
computers should be affordable for everyone, not just for some small elite that can re-use old high-end ones.
>>
>>59704315
>steadily moving the goal post to ever younger laptops

7 year old laptops are fine too

>>59704315
>computers should be affordable for everyone, not just for some small elite that can re-use old high-end ones.

I am using a mid range computer not a high end one

You can buy a netbook every 2 years for $300 if you want to, computers are as cheap as they have ever been, but people are being talked needlessly into high end ones, that is my point

Go look back to 2000, a "good" laptop was $4000 and a passable one was $2000

now you can have a decent laptop for a quarter of the low end of that

I got a pixel XL.
Before that I had a Galaxy Note 3.
On pixel XL, no built in microSD, built-in stylus s-pen thingy, ir blaster, swappable sim card, swappable battery or extended battery option. Also it's more susceptible to water damage.

The UI is not so different.

On the plus side, pixel XL comes with a few other software toys built in, along with finger print scanner and better camera and improved all around specs. Although to be honest it feels exactly the same.

I prefer the note 3 for changeable battery but that's not something new Samsung phones are any different with regard to the Pixel either.

nope, there's a digital-security divide for smartphones:
https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/03/the-digital-security-divide/475590/
iPhone SE may cost $400, but is secure and will get updates for the next 3-4 years.
in contrast, a cheap $200 Android is already insecure at launch.

I'm a bit skeptical to upgrade my phone (xperia z1) because whenever I see these specs and find they're mostly inferior to a quad-core 2.2 I ask myself "why?"

Newer things gets released but they make it inferior while still keeping the same price or higher, it doesn't make sense.

the CPUs are also not clocked at their max.
but considering that Samsung seems to have gotten all the first SD835 for themselves (fabbed in their own fab) and doesn't share their own Exynos9, there's no Android competition (besides Huawei's Kirin 960, which isn't much a factor outside of China) and Apple is far ahead anyway.

big differences being no SD slot, but that's acceptable for many. Then there's the bigger issue: one of the worst AMOLED displays up against the best display out there. I think the display is the most important thing on a phone. Half the pricetag is good though, I guess.

Flagships makes sense in the US because of exorbitant data Plan prices. It's either get a $250 phone on a $40 data plan or get a flagship with no money down for $50 a month, both end up costing around the same but you get a much better phone.

had no screen protector on my s7 for a week when i got it, had several scratches just from taking it in and out of my pocket.
>>
>>59702919

if you don't take pictures, theres not a huge reason to get a flagship phone over a $200 midrange phone..

a flagship phone will have a better LTE modem, for carrier aggregation and newer technologies like HPUE.

something like an iphone 6s/7 will have hella fast NVME storage compared to samsungs shit UFS storage.. which is really just a convenience thing. an app will open in .5 seconds instead of 1.5 or something negligible.

or something specific like samsung pay which is pretty convenient because it works where apple and google pay wont.
>>
>>59711853

i work for ATT and i see plenty of people daily with cases on their phones but no screen protectors.... scratched to shit but no cracks. iphone SE's, 6's, 6s', 7's,... every galaxy S series.
