Right?! It was bad enough when they removed the small icons option (forcing the address bar to be bigger), but why do the tabs have to be so big? Also, making the address bar a fixed width is so pointless.
>>
>>59679114
I simply can't understand why this isn't an option in all browsers by default.

Widescreen monitors have been the norm now for a while and not only are tabs on the side a much better use of space (as most websites do not fully utilise a widescreen) it allows for great implementations like tree style tabs which cannot be done with the tabs on top.

OP pic related is part of the reason nobody uses firefox anymore.

They just keep pandering to babbys first computer user. What they don't realise is that user will just use what comes with the OS, and they keep pissing off the techies, the ones who will be exposed to the browser and recommend it to the illiterates.

The techies tell them they're doing a shit job for shit users, and they respond with pandering *even harder*. (Break all the plugins! Chromeify the UI twice! Remove features! Extension nannying!)

Mozilla is what happens when you let retard SJWs run a company into the ground.

No, XUL is a security minefield and it has always been awful. Back in the old days they just shat out APIs for any old thing without a care in the world. Completely unmaintainable.

So when they're going into multiprocess they HAVE to rewrite the APIs just because XUL is so fucking bad. Now, they won't come out the other end with the SAME API but it will probably come out with more standardized equivalents.

They're not stopping with WebExtension compatibility but as for how long it takes to go from WebEx (which is designed for multiprocess compatibility) to something which includes all the powerful stuff they already had with XUL.... might be a while. They're still implementing more powerful APIs as we speak though, it's not some pipe dream or conspiracy.

>>
>>59683936
There will be the possibility of rewriting addons for the new system but XUL simply cannot stay.

I just minimize the fuck out of whatever UI they try and stick me with and ignore the rest. I actively avoid interacting with the UI. Maybe the scroll bar (as an indicator, not for scrolling)

They have two options: either make their api stable or make a decent looking default.
I want them to make the api stable so I can just use my own theme and not care about what they do, but I won't go back to having my shit break once a week like when they switched to Australis.

Having a stable api is also good for business, so I don't know why they don't fix stuff before pushing it to users.

Yeah but Firefox has always crufted in old search methods. The address bar has been unified for forever, longer than there has been a separate search bar.

Still, the searches are parsed after the address parsing. You can also do shit like tag your search engines if you use multiples.
startpage = SP = startpage.com/whatever/q=%s

then
sp <search here>

It's not a big difference except one less fucking shit widget that's always been awful with their constantly rewriting the back end and then "securing" search engine files so you can't modify them easily, etc.

I stopped using Firefox recently after a good friend who worked for Mozilla for 10+ years quit in March and told me how they were accepting under-the-table cash from Google which he didn't agree with.

On their latest android edition (52.0.2+) they no longer allow youtube videos to be played in the background. If you switch tabs, go into another app, look at your homescreen, etc.. youtube will stop.

Google paid Mozilla to disable this feature because they want everyone to pay $3.99 -$9.99 a month for their Youtube Red/Music service for the same functionality Firefox allowed for free!

Firefox was the only android browser which allowed youtube videos to be played in the background.

I wish they would just make it rock stable and lightweight. Instead they're adding more bloat that's going to up the CPU and RAM usage.

Soon I'll start to genuinely wonder if browsing the tubes is still worth the trouble. I'm already in the process of virtualizing Firefox so it's less of a pain in the ass. All browsers are either fucking garbage or botnet these days and Firefox is just the least worst, and normies don't even care.

At this point you're just hating on Mozilla and their decisions to be trendy. Fuck you and your forced memes.

Retards.

Some new "UI expert" retard probably got onboard and proceeded to ruin everything and put it on the left for some certainly good reason but that completely overlooks the fact that sometimes people get used to things and maybe you shouldn't change things too much.

Looks fine. Way better than australis (which looks like shit).

I remember thinking that the australis mockups looked good too before it actually shipped, but I think mozillas problem is that they suck at polishing stuff. I'm sure Photon will also end up being an unpolished turd.

Security didn't exactly deteriorate, it just was obviously an unsecurable mess. That's why XUL's going, because it's not some sensible API with controlled points of contact with the OS. It's a million scattered points of contact with no sense applied over the course of decades.

The new XUL-like APIs beyond WebEx will be more maintainable/securable once shit starts getting sandboxed hardcore.

No. There's more coming than just webextensions, they'll just be sane unlike XUL. XUL is and has always been fucking awful. Just accept that addons will need to be rewritten but won't lose their capabilities.

But they will stay with it since most praise the shit out of it.
>>
>>59679067
None. The only up-to-date and technically decent (well architectured and secure) alternative is Chromium, which contains hardcoded Google crap.

It's 2017. There are no good browsers. You can only choose between privacy (Firefox, customized) and security (Chromium). Personally I use a locked-down Firefox (no JS, no SVG, no remote fonts, etc.) for regular browsing and Chromium for JS-heavy sites that require too much fiddling to work properly in Firefox (most web apps).

So, what version of Firefox should I anchor in on, to weather the storm? I'm not giving up my extensions until there are suitable replacements.

I've heard 47 and 52. Sites are regularly breaking on 32, so it's time to move on to the next safe harbor.

Why do you expect to open 500 of anything and have it run well? Because it's in tabs and not windows? Web pages are way more complex than they used to be. Opening a webpage these days is basically like running Crysis. Would you expect to be able to run 500 copies of Crysis no sweat?
