useful simple programs, preferably freeware

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Thread replies: 80
Thread images: 19

Thread to ask if anyone knows of a simple program that does X, Y or Z.

Preferably freeware/donationware and open source, but if its one of its kind, then maybe not.

Or just post some of your favorite simple programs/tools.

>be sure to list if its only for one OS type, or if you know of alternatives for Windows/Linux etc

Syncthing - syncs folders directly across devices. Somewhat similar purpose to Dropbox, but so much better.
KRunner - To Linux what Launchy is to Windows. Remarkably versatile and useful, from running terminal commands to opening files and folders and even working as a scientific calculator. I prefer it to dmenu, personally.
pianobar - CLI program for using Pandora radio. Linux only, obviously.
Dexpot - adds virtual desktops to Windows 7. The amount of options you get with Dexpot is actually superior to what a lot of Linux distros give you.
Nomacs - the closest Linux has to Honeyview on Windows. So you can guess that it is a fantastic picture viewer.
nitrogen - A Linux program specifically for changing your background. It provides more options than most distros give, and its a great alternative to feh (I prefer it, actually) if you need a program specifically to set a wallpaper.

ffmpeg

If you want to do any quick video related stuff like converting/ripping audio/removing audio/resizing/optimizing. Good for making WebMs for posting here. For example:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libvpx -c:a libvorbis -fs 4096K output-file.webm

Converts an mp4 file to WebM and ensures it doesn't go over the 4mb file limit.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>59661093
>>59669163
check how to integrate everything to it and you just type a keyword to start the search and you get results fast.
Also you can integrate mpv + youtube-dl or livestreamer to watch youtube/twitch or whatever you want to stream.

>>59669267
it's fast to get to shortcuts and windows options but with little tweaking launchy behaves more like a not shit mac spotlight/linux dmenu and also it's stupid easy to skin it to not look like shit.

How are you supposed to use(install) non-potable programs then? Also some programs legitimately don't work without admin rights.
