PFSense has a feature for custom URL's with static IP mapping
example:
PFSense's local domain name is example.net
192.168.1.20 is a NAS
setting 192.168.1.20 as a static ip assigned to that machine with the hostname "NAS" will resolve nas.example.net to 192.168.1.20

My laptop running linux however does not let me do this, every local host won't resolve. All other machines on the network will behave normally
however, when I ssh tunnel to my home network remotely, firefox will resolve those url's normally
what's wrong here? I'm sure there's some DNS setting I forgot

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I think it is better to have a C application than a bash script time critical things.
Even if it was just for readability, C makes more sense.
I know it has only been a few years, but it is much easier to use.
Finding relevant information in logs are easier. Managing services is easier.
Finding the applications that slows down the system is easier.

That systemd is faster is just icing on the cake.

Guys, honest question here. Can someone be too stupid to use GNU+Linux? I used Crunchbang when it was around and it was one of the best experiences I've had on an os. I didn't really do much on it other than browse the web. Went back to Windows when Crunchbang died. I'm trying to use Ubuntu as of late and it's really nice and all but when it comes to compiling and moving files/folders around I always end up messing up and it just gets discouraging.

1- install gentoo. I'm not memeing, gentoo is the best by far. Some people say alpine is good for desktop but I've never used it myself.
2- use mate, it's more lightweight than xfce yet more full-featured than gnome.
3- don't use geany. Either use vim (or emacs, if you swing that way), or qtcreator.

Guys, I'm a noob. What is the best way to deploy Linux to embedded systems?

I'm doing a project that involves putting a tiny RabbitMQ messaging server on an embedded CentOS machine. It runs off a compact flash card along side some PLCs, passing data, etc. Right now I've basically been creating VMs on my work station, configuring the messaging brokers and drivers we built, and then burning the image over to the flash card. That's not terrible, however, I noticed that there's tons of kernel modules I don't need (cdrom, etc) that it inherits from the VM installation. Is there an automated way to rebuild the kernel or do a headless install? Would those kickstart installs work with this? What are the best practices in this situation?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>59662811
No. One of the maintainers made slapt-get and slapt-src which download and install official packages and slackbuilds, respectively. They both resolve dependencies
>>

>>
>>59663043
>>59663053
They don't come with the iso, so I guess you're "officially" supposed to resolve deps manually. However, this doesn't happen as often as you might think because the iso comes with a huge amount of packages, so even most of the slackbuilds don't have any dependencies besides what you already have installed (if you go for the full installation, which most people do)

I am trying to run a Gentoo guest in VirtualBox. I changed my eselect profile to default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/plasma to try and get a DE. Doing emerge -DNuq @world took like 16 hours to emerge 240 packages. Then I'm trying to get a DE up and running by emerging KDE packages but get some kind of errors about USE flag constraints or dependencies (I thought profiles were supposed to be like a set of USE flags that are guaranteed to play nice together). The default VirtualBox screen is so small that I can't even read what the USE flag constraint problem is that I need to resolve. So I try reading all the logs associated with emerge and portage but they don't display useful information (the errors that emerge is spitting out before quitting). So I try piping the output to less and it doesn't work (just cuts off stuff I need), even try writing the output to a file and doesn't give me what I want. So then I try making the screen bigger by installing VirtualBox guest additions so I can resize the screen and actually read all the output. Well I get some messages about x11 packages blocking a certain virtualbox package. I do a complete rollback to the default profile in eselect and run a world rebuild thinking maybe I can get guest additions running first and figure the other stuff out later. Now app-emulation/virtualbox-guest-additions fails to compile and googling led me down a rabbit hole of bug reports and it turns out that this package just doesn't work on kernel 4.9.

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=603472

So that has been my Gentoo experience so far.

Is it normal for certain things to just feel "off" in Linux if you're coming from Windows? For example, the sound isn't quite the same, videos on youtube act kind of weird, the mouse speed is either different or has weird acceleration, that kind of stuff. I really want to start using it as my daily OS because I don't really use my computer for anything that couldn't be done on Linux but it's hard to get used to these certain things, or even know exactly what to look up to see about fixes.

For info I'm on BunsenLabs. All I'm really trying to do is use my computer to browse the internet, look at images, and watch video/listen to music but so far none of them have been as free of issues as on my Windows 7 install, I mean it took me over an hour just to be able to have sound.

If you guys have suggestions I would love to hear. It will be on github and I plan on making scripts to install for Arch, and possible Ubuntu.
>>
>>59664373
Stop using meme distros. Don't use meme DEs that don't even have proper config options either. In the end, it will still feel weird because GNU does most things far better than windows (sound is more accurate and volume is correctly managed. Compare to windows 7 where even if the sound bar for a specific program is at, say, 10%, you still have to open the mixer and click the bar for the 10% to apply. Also compare via audio drivers: the via audio drivers are really shitty on windows and output quite a bit of static, and periodically break in a way only fixable by restarting the OS, whereas GNU does not have that problem). Other things just work differently.

What should I be using instead? I like the look of BL and like Openbox. Obviously though I could live without it if it meant I could have a system better for what I want to do.
>periodically break in a way only fixable by restarting the OS
I don't know what you're referring to but I've had the same install for over a year now and I've never experienced my sound breaking. Explorer breaks a lot more frequently.

I've got a machine running Ubuntu. What's the smoothest method to set it up to dual boot with Windows?

honestly senpai, its so much nicer running linux in vms these days

do you absolutely need dual boot
>>
>>59664725
GNU/Linux*
>>
>>59664534
It's fairly simple with ubuntu. It's however easier to do going from Windows to Windows+ubuntu. If you are using it for programming and don't really need gui, I would suggest the ubuntu subsystem, it works pretty well.

Otherwise, I would just follow that multiple amount of guides online. Just make sure you don't mess with windows partitions or you will mess things up big time.

That is entirely possible, but much can be achieved by rote memorization and disciplined practice.
>>
>>59664534
Windows has a nasty habit of nuking non-Windows partitions during system updates.

I wouldn't trust dual booting. Either put it on a separate drive entirely or virtualize Windows using QEMU or something

Hey /g/uys I'm learning about controlling processes
and an example I'm given is this(with output):

# nice +5 updatedb &

[1] 31154
nice: +5: No such file or directory
[1]+ Exit 127 nice +5 updatedb

when I run it in a virtual terminal or over ssh I get this:

# nice +5 updatedb &

[1] 31477
# nice: +5: No such file or directory

_ <- (blinking cursor no command prompt)

It's just used to demonstrate how to add nice values when starting
a process but I'm interested as to why it's not working as in my book.
It exits every time so I can't see if the nice worked as intended. Is it
perhaps the shell interpreted the argument to nice incorrectly?

From my understanding an exit 127 means that a command is not in
the path or that there is some typo but I checked and it's definitely in
my $PATH and the command line is straight from the book. Is the
book wrong and updatedb can't be run in the background?

An explanation would be much appreciated thanks!

My thinkpad (x301) has a weird problem in every distro. It sometimes beeps when I press a key that doesn't do anything (like pressing delete without anything typed into a terminal, or trying tab completion to a path that doesn't exist, or typing something in control f in Firefox that isn't on the page.) Closing the lid sometimes makes it stop doing the noise, and sometimes it makes the noise come back. Muting everything in alsamixer doesn't affect it.

>>59666305
btw I turned off all beeps, including "keyboard beep" in the BIOS
