back when I first got into programming -- with no prior experience -- I wrote a fizz buzz solution in bash because of a '95% of /g/ can't do this' thread. I posted my solution to gloat, despite it being awful.

Fast forward in time, I'd improved in my fundamentals and was browsing a thread like this and I saw someone post my fizz buzz scrot. I recognized it as mine and was able to laugh at how retarded I was.

What I'm getting at is, code that anyone writes is going to be laughable when they're new. Post a snippet of some code that you first wrote if you're so brave.

Short-hand, default parameters.
A lot of languages allow you to skip groups of parameters if you specify at least one of them somewhere. (or some let you skip all of them)

I'm sure in Javascript, you can make an infinite loop with for(;;)
In this case, you are just giving the print command a shorthand slice

Nature comprises chaos chaos means you know nothing. Chaos-free methods, or reduced-chaos methods (like heuristics) usually perform better. We could use simulated annealing or Dawkins weasel or GA for anything, but since we have perfect information that nature does not have (since we defined our own chaos-free universe model which is math) we can do better without involving nature.

Not compsci, but software dev 2005.
I went on a train for 35~ minutes twice a day to go to a place that was hopefully going to do a year 3 there instead of a much further University.
The only condition was good numbers for it.

Not only did 90% of my class fail those 2 years, the college I could have went to that was 5 minutes bus away also mostly failed.
I could have just went fucking there instead of the train.
The others in that class though, holy fuck they were dense as shit. Typical brogrammer types.

Still, worth it for that little nice family café and the lecturers.
The lecturers were top-tier, we (the non-retards) all went out at lunch to this café together pretty regularly.
I miss college sometimes.
We even played pic related on a last day before holidays and shared copies of downloaded TV shows and shit. They gave zero fucks about piracy. One of them even had access to a large supply of cheap USB sticks. Still have that today.

The decompilation does that actually.
Deciding if you had a switch or an if is hard.

But in this case it's doing string comparisons. It was initially like this. No way to make a switch out of this.

>No way to make a switch out of this.
are you trying to say you can't do switch with Strings?

from the C# spec
>If the type of the switch expression is sbyte, byte, short, ushort, int, uint, long, ulong, bool, char, string, or an enum-type, or if it is the nullable type corresponding to one of these types, then that is the governing type of the switch statement.

>>
>>59670691
What kind of pointless information is this?
Not all databases are the same.
>>
>>59670868

Every DB I know uses ternary logic.

false = (! true)
true = (! false)
null = (! null)
true IS NOT null
false IS NOT null

Yes, the negation of NULL is also NULL.

So "tralse" is not that far fetched, because NULL is a logical value, but beyond binary logic.

C# actually allows for nullable booleans, likely as a result of LINQ being so deeply tied into databases.
Ternary logic is actually incredibly useful a lot of the time and I'm disappointed more language that have default boolean implementations don't allow for null

That actually shouldn't matter because the third statement in a for loop is executed on its own. i++ and ++i are equivalent in that step of the loop.
>>
There is NOTHING wrong with any of these unless you're some sort of retarded white nationalist trying to enforce your stupid colonial attitude in code.

Looks more like a stub than anything. But I prefer noop stubs.

What's the proper way to this, just running it through a for loop correct?
>>
>>59672114
Just convert the string into an integer dumbfuck
>>
>>59672114
 GUI.cards[a.getLabel().toInt()-1].setDone(true);

Replaces everything visible in that picture.
Rookies often make these mistakes. But the use of a GUI is concerning. You should figure this out by the time you start doing gui.
>>
>>59672228
Also member functions suck. Look at how ugly that is.
>>
>>59672114

int i = (int) a.getLabel();
if (i>8) { i=8 };
GUI.cards[--i].setDone(true);
>>
>>59672228

You were missing the last "else" clause.
We don't know if there's more options (maybe 8, 9, 10..) that also change "GUI card 7"..
>>
>>59672272
>the last else
Assuming you're talking about the innermost nested else. The last else is an assumption that if a.getlabel() doesn't return the strings containing the strings for 1-7 it contains "8".
My code does the right thing in that case.

This person's code does make it more difficult to understand what's going on so I can't really fault you for being confused.
>>

Ah wait I get it.
I assumed by the manual nature of this scheme that that is a bug.
But you're right.

Replicates what I presumed a bug

To be fair, the programm _probably_ works like you expected, with the values 1-8. That's why your code is good (if there are only 8 values), because you immediately see there are no edge cases or something wierd.

I just wanted to be nitpicking that we can't tell from the graphic alone.

Holy fuck I thought I was a good programmer (I began/started taking it seriously last summer), but looking back on things I did last year I want to barf in my mouth

I mean, you shouldn't use a switch for this either. The `Witnessed` variable is apparently referring to some sort of Event. The behavior for determining the subtitle and game over cause can be decided based off of the event type, which will make the update logic much shorter and robust.

*Anytime* you start having tons of consecutive conditionals, it's time to consider abstracting the behavior away so that the more abstract logic is clear and the mind isn't boggled down by the particulars.

It's referred to as cyclomatic complexity. You should do CI on your code, and have a cyclomatic limit warning/error to make sure you're not going overboard like our friendo yandere dev.

Not him but ffs:

switch(this.witnessed){
case "Weapon and Blood and Insanity"
...
case "Weapon and Blood"
etc.
}
>>
>>59676359
Yes. This was literally the reason for Microsoft skipping a whole number, shitty Java devs using that sentence in some form.
It was in a large amount of software so they just skipped it instead of saying "fuck you retards you should have thought about the future" like they did to every other dev that decided to suck the dick of MS APIs.

>>59663257
>retards don't know SWITCH is literally IF statements covered in sugar.

Code is still a fucking mess, but seriously.
Also, it's called a game. Games tend to have heavy use of chained interactions. Especially when it comes to, you know, AI and interaction.
>>
>>59676880
It'd be much more readable with a switch case though, or by chaining ifs since several cases produce the same effects.

Let's face it, that code is a complete mess anyway, switch or if.

It has combined witness events but only single reactions. (insanity reaction in the 3 weapon, blood and insanity)

This whole chain if reactions to witnessing events could be combined in to a handful of lines and reactions from a file or array.

Also, the most important question, where's blood and lewd reaction?

-1, 0 and 1

size_t is the maximum unsigned integer that can run on your platform.

meant for iterations and accessing through indexes and the like.
>>

>Also, the most important question, where's blood and lewd reaction
That method is 2000 or so lines longer, it's lost around there somewhere.
>>
>>59676880
i don't know much about that, but i think it's just a hoax produced by some memster trying to reason the skipping the '9', which was just clear marketing move without any real substance.
>>
>>59677263
Makes you wonder why he never just made generic reactions based on a counter going past a threshold.
Then just incrementing those counters with any instance of witnessing the triggers.

This way you eliminate a fuckton of IFs and replace it entirely with checks on each trigger.
So you'd check if bloodThreshold > MAX_BLOOD_THRESHOLD or something like that
This is how I've done stuff like that before, even with text messages and such all saved in an array, concatenated together if necessary.
I wrote a very basic concat function to handle the combining properly with decent punctuation if I remember correct, it's been a few years.

I can understand doing that when testing out a few conditions, but the entire thing?!
Fuck that noise. Too many conditions to check, gotta step back and simplify.
