What he is advocating is exactly what Richard Stallman says you should do in order to learn programming https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvwkaHBrDyI and that is find an open source project with a large active userbase, write a feature for it, and debug said feature learning from the people at the project as you go. It's the only way to learn really (programming, as in the trade of programming).
