Which drives do you rock?
recommend & discuss opinions because my current one is nearing its size limit and I need to migrate to a bigger one ≥2TB, I saved up money so money is not really an issue.

What are you, a degenerate?
Western digital 8tb usb 3 drives
The newer editions are usb powered but mine has power cord too. ~200 bucks
what about hdd dockstations?
i have $100~$150 to spend on either some 3TB external, or get a 1TB + dock to use a myriad of old 160~500GB hdd at my disposal, which i would like to use as second backup cold storage
are dockstations reliable?
i bought a ide+sata+fdd to USB adapter, but its so inconsistent, even though everytime it works its stable and same speed (about 15Mbytes/s),
sometimes it doesnt show the partitions, and sometimes shows one, and a couple minutes later shows the second partition, the behavior isnt in any specific hdd.

yeah, 3.5inch externals disappeared but are making a return with the latest bigest capacity ones
i like it better, you can always hook them up inside your desktop via sata
are 3.5 more reliable than 2.5?

3.5 are *generally* more reliable than 2.5 because the platters are physically larger and therefore are less susceptible to corruption.
seagate backup plus.. never had any issues. neat looking enclosure with gloss and sharp edges. excellent rw speeds. I have the 2tb model, they offer a 5tb model. Seriously, no complaints except for the use of the weird usb3 micro combo connector on the controller. not a big deal though, just don't care much for that standard.

owner for 4 years by the way. speeds have kept up. no corruption so far.

I use a WD USB3 1TB, very cheap and reliable afaik. I hope to upgrade to LaCie soon though, their rugged drives are legendary and the USB-C/thunderbolt combo will be hopefully be a great pair when I get myself one of those new MacBooks.
