This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Is 2017 the year of free codecs?

What's bad about vp8/vp9?
>>
>>59648980
What's wrong with ogg flac?
>>
>>59650972
>flac in a video container
does that even work? opus is great though.
>>
>>59648980
I though Daala was this years GREAT CODEC.
>>
>>59650577
they're not contrarian enough
>>
>>59651009
of course flac works in a video container, do you download nothing but dvdrips?
>>
>>59651033
I don't use ogg much, i thought it was a subset of mkv which i didn't think would support flac. Huh.

I'm not too familiar with codecs, what are the good things that's going to happen because of those two?
>>
>>59651100
Well it will make official some of the "potential liability" encoders and shit that have to be distributed outside normal system stuff. Even most normie software has moved into supporting free codecs alongside mp3 by default.
>>
I can't help but feel AV1's release will be bungled in some way and thus ruin its entire future
>>
that's good because mp3 quality degrades over time
>>
>>59651023
Parts of Daala are being combined with a bunch of other in-the-works codecs (including VP10) into AV1, with support from all the biggest processor manufacturers (Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, ARM, et al) and video streaming companies (Google, Netflix, Amazon, et al).
>>
>>59651429
Nah. Too much invested. Too much money to save by using it for years to come.
>>
>>59651042
>subset of mkv
You're thinking of WebM.
OGG is its own container which has been around for quite awhile.
>>
>>59654475
K, most of the tools are set up around mp4/mkv and I guess I never gave enough fucks about ogg since theora was meh.
>>
Don't you need new hardware for it? I only have a couple years old latitude
>>

>>mfw the last mp3 patent will expire at the end of the yea
Isn't this have happened already? Fedora included in base install a free mp3 codec as i know.
>>
http://opus-codec.org/

We already have a superior audio codec in OPUS

MP3 is extremely outdated and irrelevant 90s audio codec
