It depends on the laptop. Doesn't matter that much on a lower spec card anyways.

I know this is a stupid question but can I hook up an eGPU to a 2011 MacBook Pro through the Thunderbolt port? If so, can I then hook two extra displays to said GPU? I want the ability to have more browser windows open for easier shitposting.

Research

>>59649890
Thanks mate
>>
You don't need a GPU to play Dwarf Fortress.
>>
>>59649925
You could technically connect a Xeon Phi to one of these adapters and it would probably work. PCIe 2.0 x1 would probably hurt it a LOT though.
>>
>>59649833
Probably doesn't use unnecessary lanes. I'd imagine power isn't necessary since you're powering the card externally and there's a few such as the JTAG lane that can most likely be left disconnected as well.

>>59649971
I've been wanting to pair a Xeon Phi with an Atom N270 netbook for quite some time. Never get around to buying one though.
>>
>>59650126
You could use the Atom N270 netbook's MiniPCIe and ExpressCard at the same time to have both an external CPU and GPU.
>>
>>59650162
No ExpressCard slot
>>
>>59650162
Also the Phi's not a CPU, it's a coprocessor
>>
>>59650175
I was under the impression you boot to it and then it's used as the main CPU.
>>59650168
What a shame. It would be hilarious to see a netbook set up like that, because it serves absolutely no purpose.
>>
>>59650201
No, it's actually a Linux computer on a PCIe card, and some day, the Phi alone will be pretty funny with a netbook
>>
>>59648551

Because the Surface Pro 4 has no support for it even though the dock connector has the bandwidth.

Plus I have a desktop. Why would I bother?
>>
>>59648551
because mobile GTX 1050 is enough for my needs. Also eGPU isn't mobile, which makes it useless to me.
>>
>>59650162
no you couldn't
first of, no bios support. Secondly, all Atoms have only USB pinout in minipcie ports specifically for WiFi and WWAN support.
>>
>>59649971
DF is single core.
>>
>>59648583
x1 gen2, 5Gbps
It's only usable due to bandwidth compression, but it still limits 750Ti performance by about 25% if we talk about external 1920x1200 screen connected via HDMI. On internal screen it is limited by 50% due to optimus, and it's also almost unusable due to optimus frame copy-pasting delays.
Also it's pointless to invest in this shit unless you're extremely poor and can't get a laptop with decent dGPU or just desktop computer dedicated for gayming or gayming + steam streaming, so you can hide your PC anywhere and gaym on your shitpad via ethernet/ac network.
>>
>>59650554
not any more i don't think
>>
>>59648551
because I leave my gpu in the case of my computer??
>>
Doesn't this require a special BIOS update to work with certain machines?

Because it's hit and miss.
>inb4 werks on my machine :)
Yeah well I don't have the same machine and would rather not deal with shady drivers from an obscure forum and low level software to make it run. Bandwidth and noise are two problems that might affect only certain games or under weird circumstances, but if you're idea of gaming machine is troubleshooting with shots in the dark then go ahead and get an egpu.
>>
>>59651602
yep, with some laptops
others need you to run something to reallocate memory or something like that and its paid software
>>
>>59651631
It's a novel idea but I suppose it would be cheaper just to get a dedicated gaming machine (console, steam machine whatever)
>>
>>59651656
not at all, it is a bit cheaper to do this even assuming you dont already have a gpu and psu lying around but imho not worth the risk, plus that is if you use the internal screen which will make it even slower, with an external screen the price gap closes a bit more
>>
>>59648551
Because there's no use case on the planet that requires more than a 1050 in a laptop that come in any decent new 15 inch laptop and using an eGPU defeats the entire purpose of a laptop when you have to lug around a bunch of extra shit. Even the cheapest gaymer laptop, like the Inspiron 15 that costs $950 for the i7 and 1050 Ti, and you can build a desktop with a i5 7600k and 1070 for that money.

I am thinking about just getting something like the XPS 13 and just docking it when I'm at home and hooking up an eGPU and getting rid of my desktop, but it's not a very cost effective solution just yet.
>>
They say it got shitty bandwidth on my m4600
>>
because i run a desktop and that would be incredibly idiotic
>>
>>59648551
How are prices looking for an adaptor plus GPU housing? Last I looked it was pretty expensive.

>>
>>59652632
How does a docking station not qualify as "extra shit you need to lug around"? And what's the purpose of having a laptop, a portable machine, if you have to be tethered to a wall to be able to use it to its fullest extent?
>>
>>59650556
You can actually play on Wireless-N as well.

I stream to my MBP over WiFi-N and I get a constant 50mbps /15ms latency through steam. Effective bandwidth hovers around 150-225mbps.

>>
>>59648551
I do it and it works alright. If you temper your expectations a bit and already have the card/compatible laptop on hand, an egpu setup *can* make sense. Very important is understanding and accepting that it's not going to turn your grimy ebay thinkpad into a fucking alienware. More games will be *playable*, where the igpu would normally laugh and spit in your face.

But there are only three differential pairs in a USB3 cable (counting the USB2 data lines, which may well be lower quality). How can they transfer 4 PCIe lanes like that?

It really works anon, my X230 runs vidya like a dream 75% performance of my GTX770. I have to use a strange, slightly inconvenient workaround for code 12 (unplug monitor before I start the machine, than replug it once I'm at the desktop.) but once my laptop's on it's literally like how my desktop was with the same card. Feels like I'm sat at a full power desktop even though I just press the eject button on my mini dock and I can pick it up and take it to lectures. Literally the best of both worlds.
>>
I found a t420 (i5 with 500 gb hdd) I bought off of ebay for 115, is that a good price? It seemed in good condition with just a screen scratch and a cracked corner bezel, or so they said. I was wondering if I could still install Linux with a possible bios password? I'm guessing not
>>
>>59657277
There's a tool you could buy to remove the bios password, but it really isn't worth the time / money. Just get one that isn't locked.
