Has anyone ever bought any used/refurbished components online?

Where did you get your items from and how reliable were they?
>>
>>59637955
I've bought lots of refurb shit off fleabay. They work pretty well but anything with fans you should assume they're going to be old, worn-out shit that needs replacing, or it'll sound like a lawnmower.
>>
I've bought used CPUs, mobos, GPUs, and ram. I don't fuck with power supplies.
>>
>>59637955
q6600, payed 35E in 2/2014
still works
>>
Most of my stuff is bought used on eBay. Got a dual quad core Opteron server with 24GiB RAM and some SAS drives for $100 a few years ago
>>
>>59638232
Do you still use it? Sounds like a good deal and could be used as NAS/media centre when retired.

I buy faulty graphics cards from eBay dirt cheap, plus a new one elsewhere, switch the backplates (with the serial number sticker) and then return the faulty one in place of the new. Sometimes you have to switch the entire cooler due to a secondary sticker, but that's not an issue. Repasting usually helps temperatures anyway. Both my current cards, a 290X and a 1080, were obtained this way.
>>
>>59637955
it's a lottery, anon
I bought used HD3870 back in 2019. Had it untill 2013, then sold it to a friend. Still works.
Then I bought used HD6870 which died after 6 months.
My used 2500K still works flawlessly, so is my used E2160.
It all depends how old is the shit you're buying and more importantly how lucky you are.

What you definitely don't buy used are drives. Every single used drive I bought has failed within a year. I learned my lesson.
Buying used PSUs can also be risky since if a PSU fails there's a chance it will fry another component, but if you get a fairly recent PSU from a reputable brand you should be fine.

whoops, meant 2009
>>

Nice try, John Titor.
>>
>>59637955
Ive only bought used graphics cards for my PC, and none of them have failed. Ive only bought 3 so far since I only by the used high end graphics cards and upgrade every three to four years.
>>
Yeah a lot. I had a problem only once, a Maximus V Gene had a burned USB port, but the seller was kind enough to return the money.
>>
>>59637955
I have bought all kinds of stuff used. Havent had really issues except on one HD 5870 I got I had to replace the fan
>>
Some parts fail more often than others.

Assuming a CPU is treated well, it can last for a decade+. GPUs, however, fail somewhat more often. Motherboards and PSUs are sketchier still, due to things like failing capacitors. And you'd probably never want to buy a used HDD.

It depends on what you're buying, but assuming the CPU doesn't have, say, bent PGA pins or destroyed contacts for LGA, it's probably a safe bet.
>>
I've built a bunch of friends computers with parts I've bought on ebay. One friend got a system with a used 2500k ($75), 4gb ddr3 ($20) and a r9-380x ($100).

Another I recently built a mini-itx setup with a i3-2100, 4gb ddr3, and the motherboard itself, which were all bundled ($108). Added a 1050 ti and the thing works great. I also got the case for that computer on ebay as well (bitfenix prodigy, $30 shipped).

I always buy a new SSD/HDD and PSU though.

>>

>>
>>59638307
Good tip
>>
>>59637955
bought a r9 290 from a guy running a bitcoin farm. Had to replace the stock cooler, works fine to this day
>>
>>59639337
you're an outlier, usually those things artifact out the ass
>>
>>59637955
Been hunting lately for a gtx 295 just for a desk prop but still too fucking expensive on ebay
>>
>>59639532
My 280X from a bitcoin farm worked for 2.5 years before it started artifacting.
>>
>>59639566
how long was the farm running it? esp. with 7950s / 280Xs thats 2-4 years of constant runtime if you buy it straight off a farm, more than enough time to start artifacting
>>
I once got a 6950 from the overclock.net marketplace. Guy used it to btc mine. Used it for years still works too this day but i use a 390X these days
>>
>>59639559
Also, I bought a used HD 6950 from ebay. The seller said it worked fine but was selling it for 23 dollarydoos. I thought it was suspicious, which it was. I got it in the mail a week later, it worked fine so I shut it off and didnt fuck with it again for a couple more weeks. Fast forward, i try benchmarking it for shits n giggles when I notice both fans wont spin. I hit those bitches with my air compressor and WD-40, which worked for about a month then bought 9 dollar replacement fans. It runs like a champ now.
>>
>>59639609
I don't know exactly, but long enough to damage bearings on one of the fans.
>>
>>59637955
almost exclusively.
only things you should buy new are psu and storage

>>
>>59637955
Never online, it's like gambling, you lose more than you win. I'd rather buy from a friend I know.
>>
>>59638065
>>59637955
I bought a used Seasonic 380W 80+ platinum in November. It's still doing fine to this day
>>
>>59637955
I almost exclusively buy 2nd hand if that is what you are asking.
Just last week upgraded my good ol' GTX560Ti which died on me to an RX480. Brand new 480, bought 1½ months ago, still with receipt and everything. 20% cheaper than if I had bought it myself.
Mostly buy off of hardware fora and craigslist-style sites. Never had a single problem.

Had a mobo fuck itself during a BIOS update.

Bought a RMA'd mobo of the same kind from shop's bargain bin.

Used it to flash the dead mobo's BIOS chip by powering up and swapping.
>>
Bought 2 970s and im selling one using the other. Also found some computers and one of them had an i7 2600(non k). Might use that as a backup
