You can do a DNS lookup and see if there's an associated IP but I suppose you want to know if a specific domain is for sale or not.

I am trying to check if the domainname is registered, sorry for the bad descrption above, It doesn't automatically mean, that the domain is not registered if the dns resolve fails. :/
