Does having a USB 3.0 microSD adapter make a difference vs a USB 2.0 adapter in a 3.0 port?
>>
Are the front case USB ports determined by the motherboard or by the case itself? Like as far as what USB protocol they use.

Would assume it's built into the case and upgrading your mobo won't help them, but wasn't sure.
>>
>>59607345
It's the motherboard unless you have some sort of embedded bus in your case
>>
>>59607364
Oh, really? So if I'm using a mobo with USB 3.0 then my front ports are USB 3.0 as well even if the case is hella old?
>>
>>59607378
Yeah they're backwards compatible
>>
why does my eyebrow hurt so damn much
>>
>>59607378
>>59607423 >>59607364 is talking out his ass. USB ports are different on the motherboard buy ultimately determined by what the case has. If the case has USB 3.0 port you need a 3.0 connector on the mobo, same with 2.0, but you cannot plug the USB 2.0 front port into a 3.0 on the mobo, and vice-versa.

ffmpeg can handle mpeg2/h264/adx encoding, but it doesn't support usm
vgmtoolbox supports demuxing, but doesn't support muxing
the only tools i saw where the offical ones, though i'm not certain if they can be told just to mux prepared streams and not transcode them again

I ran RAID5 on my shit but you need a couple drives. Easy to expand and you dont lose as lot of storage and you have at least 1 drive redundancy.

>>
>>59608775
>>59608727
zfs is software raid
its whole filesystem with raid like functionality
its great in every way except license preventing to be included straight out of the box on linux

usually its default on nas4free and freeNAS and other unix based nad oriented OSs
>>
>>59608285
>>59608572
look into either raid5 or raid6
raid5 you lose one disk worth of space but can lose any one disk, raid6 is the same but two/two
>>59608727
never use raid0 unless you have a good reason to
it's fast, but if any disk fails, it's goodbye all data
only consider it for fast, /temporary/ storage
>>
>>59608740
It should be OK as long as your temps are not too high, but you should try to tweak the voltage a bit lower if you can.

>>59608749
Hmm that's sad to hear.
Maybe I'll just use them without RAID and just sort all my junk directly that way instead of having a RAID5 with subfolders, if I ever setup my fileserver again.

>>59608727
RAID0 has no redundancy, it just makes all drives look like one and you lose all data if shit fucks up.
>>
>>59608285

Is a university degree necessary to start a decent career in IT?
I am from Germany and have two options right now: Go to university and study IT, or start a vocational training + work for a local company.
I've already spent a few years at university in a field that I don't want to work in and I'm pretty tired of studying and exams. I'd rather work a comfy 9-5 job and make some money, even if its not much at first.
The only reason why I am still undecided is that I fear that not getting a degree will limit my career options in the long run. While some people said that this is bullshit and all that matters is intelligence, skill and effort you put in, some others told me a degree is a must if I don't want to end as a codemonkeyslave.
>>
>>59608908
>Guess I'll go for raid5 then? Or ZFS?
is the whole system just about being storage on the network?
>>
>>59608853
>Maybe I'll just use them without RAID and just sort all my junk directly that way instead of having a RAID5 with subfolders
if you're backing up, then the risk of a second disk failing during recovery from the first disk failing shouldn't be a problem
with raid5 you also have the benefit of it being one contiguous volume, so no need to manually pick which disk to place files onto
and you get a speed advantage, as files are written to and read from all disks at the same time

>>59608908
>Do I have to backup that raid as well? When does it end?
as far as you're willing to go
it depends on your budget and just how important you consider that data
>>
>>59608928
Just going to store a bunch of movies, videos, series, and such-like.
>>
>>59608908
Personally I'd try RAID5, and if you want to have a backup go RAID5+1 if you want it contained on the same machine, or use something like rsync to write changes to a separate machine storage.
>>
>>59608953
what he means is, is the machine a dedicated file server or not?
ZFS is an enterprise filesystem, it works best when it has a lot of resources to work with, that and it's not available on windows or macos, so if you need one of those OS's on the machine, then you can't use ZFS
>>
>>59608943
It's not for backups, just a torrent box for movies and series that i wanted max storage but with some redundancy in case of single drive failure.
I already ran the server with RAID5 for a couple years before for the same reasons you listed and the ones i listed just now in this post.
>>
>>59608920
if you are are not stupid and or poor its better to get that degree, assuming you wont piss it away on something you wont be doing

but that all depends on your field and current opportunity
if you have chance to be junior sysadmin at some 19 years then it would be smarter to go for it and work on certifications. At 25 you could be pulling insane money while doing very little work, all in the expertise

maybe its similarly for codemonkeys, but I kinda doubt it, there will always be hard work there

>>59608996
then yea, just use zfs raidz1 (raid5) or mdadm raid5
zfs is safer, in that it does checksumming, but it's slower and not as flexible (you can't, say, turn your 4 disk raidz1 into a 5 disk raidz1 without completely redoing it)
mdadm is faster and more flexible, but doesn't do checksumming, not that you were doing that before with single (non-zfs) disks

it's really a bummer i can't recommend btrfs raid5, and it's fast, even more flexible than mdadm, AND it does checksumming
but it's raid5 and raid6 support is currently critically flawed

Coding is the underlying lifeblood of everything computers. Even if it isn't technically required to accomplish something (it is for most everything) it still describes how all those mediums work on surface and knowing how to code has good implications on you and how you work.

System administration is absolutely not oriented towards beginners. It deals with weird concepts in computer science and the very premise of making something secure and your understanding of these concepts is absolutely vital.

The only position in system administration viable for beginners is clicking a button and having software do the work for you, and that's something that can and will be absolved as much as possible.

Learn to code. If 5 years down the line it turns out that you're particularly good with security then become a sys admin.

i have a xperia z5c e5823 on 6.0.1
i have no rooting experience but i am no idiot
my question is, is there a comprehensive guide to follow for this exact or what would /g/ do in my position?

I have not found a way to safely and automatically back up my files on Windows 10, safe manual backups of the most work files on a USB stick and cloud.

I have a Toshiba 5TB HDD that every time I plug in my desktop it slows everything down to a snail's pace. But it's collecting dust so I should use it.

Should I turn it into a NAS with either a 1) Raspberry Pi or 2) my Acer Aspire 5051, a 10 year old laptop and put Free NAS on it?

C question

When using rand(), if I do

int sum;

sum = (rand() % 275);

I get an int between 0 and 275 for sum, like normal, but if I do

sum += (rand() % 275);

I get a strange value like 131508. Why is this? I did seed using srand(time(0)).

a laptop could work but you have to make sure it can handle drives that are that big.
and you need to connect it somehow, either external USB enclosure or eSATA or a drive dock, whichever is easiest for your other hardware and depending on the performance you want.

google is your friend to find out if your hardware can use drives of the storage size you want to use.

So I set up a webserver using a CentOS install. It's hosted on a VM on my windows server, and I can access the IT'S WORKING page for apache. I do have to disable firewalld though.

My question is, how exactly does a web server actually get on the internet after being set up? Like, I understand how it works, I do it for a living, but I've never actually hosted my own website before. I spent two hours on Sunday trying to figure out how to get a mock website up with a domain I own, and I couldn't figure it out at all. Do I use the nameservers given to me by the domain registrar and put them in ifcfg or something? If so, how does my site get an IP?

I'm honestly just a bit confused.
>>
>>59610761
It depends what you're looking to do and how many computers and devices you're goinna have on the network. If you have a 25Mbps download from comcast and like 5 devices that connect to the internet to do typical internet things, then NO you dont need anything near 802.11ac...

However, if you have 20+ devices and you stream movies from a network drive and maybe have a webserver or something and you want no bandwidth limits then go with the AC.

I know the ports are gigabit and the theoretic Wifi speed is just over a Gigabit per second so that is pretty fast but know that, its THEORETIC.. So you will only be getting the full 802.11 gigabit speeds when transferring gigs and gigs of data between LOCAL computers and devices.
>>

That helps, thanks for the info.

not personally done it but read about others that have. sometimes just a few months sometimes many months. you should start looking for a replacement. main reason for artifacts are solder points heating up and cooling down, resulting in bad connections, it will most likely come back sooner or later if you keep using the card.

So because I'm a huge sperglord, I ended up throwing my iPhone against a wall in a fit of anger today. Now it's broken and won't turn on. After talking with both Apple and Verizon tech support, they've concluded my phone is irreparably broken and needs to be replaced.

Luckily, my phone is still under limited warranty. But as you can guess, the warranty doesn't cover accidental damage like throwing it against a wall. I only told Verizon and Apple that my phone stopped working all of a sudden, so I can still get my phone replaced for free, but only if Apple or Verizon don't notice I threw it against a wall.

I have the option of taking my iPhone to an Apple retail store tomorrow and getting it replaced there, or recieving a new iPhone from Verizon in 3 days and then shipping my broken phone back.

So my question is, which company is more likely to notice that my phone was damaged from being thrown against a wall? There's no damage on the exterior, my concern is that they'll notice it was thrown against a wall when they open up the phone to do a component check.

I know they don't, did you read my whole post?

I didn't tell either Verizon or Apple that I threw it against a wall, I only told them that it stopped working suddenly. So I can still get a free replacement, but only if they don't notice it was damaged "accidentally".

So how likely are either Verizon or Apple to notice that my phone was broken by being thrown against a wall? There's no exterior damage, my concern is when they open up the broken phone to check for liquid damage and the like.

Out of the two, which is less likely to notice the phone was damaged in an accident? Verizon or Apple?

ie. if they say something like "parts have come loose inside due to blunt force that above normal" or something, you just reply "i havent dropped it, i dont know how it could happen." (or similar) and if they keep mentioning it you could say something like "maybe it wasnt attached properly from the beginning". and if they deny that you could say "well then something must have happened to the phone before it was sold to me".

but i doubt you will have to do any of this.

This is just a quick question cuz Youtube Help is the least helpful thing ever.

I've had Youtube for nine years now, but only now have I started uploading videos that are actually kinda popular (getting 20,000 views now). I want to monetize my videos (even if I only make a few bucks) and just now have my account eligible for monetization (I have three videos that have a monetization claim on them, but they're getting disputed at the moment).

So I try to look up how to actually get my videos monetized. Even though my account is in good standing and all that (I even have an AdSense account and virtually everything that WOULD have my account monetizable), the settings for each video don't show up where I can monetize. Not even when I upload a new video. The settings are supposed to show up in a little dollar sign in the manager or the tab in the edit page, but they're not there.

I'm assuming that it's because I literally JUST got my account eligible a few minutes ago. Maybe it takes a while to update. If so, how long does it take to update? If not, how come it's not showing up? Is it because of my copyrighted videos?

Also, do I get the revenue for videos from BEFORE they were uploaded? Like I uploaded a video and it got 20,000 views and however many minutes watched (20 second video). Then I made my account monetizationable. Will I get the money that that video would have earned had it been monetized when it was uploaded?

>>
>>59613506
>i think you just answered your own question...
But I thought that even with videos that have a claim on them, you can still make money on your videos that DON'T have a claim on them. Even Youtube Help says that
>"If you're having issues submitting videos for monetization, it may be because some of the videos are age-restricted or claimed by a third party. You can't monetize these types of videos."

I think this implies that only these videos I can't monetize from, but I can from the rest, right? At least that's what it looks like.

you dont need a disk plugged in to get into BIOS.
The fans can spin even if the rest is broken, them spinning just means the mobo gets power and can transfer that to the fan pin headers, doesnt have to mean the CPU works.

So I recently bought a laptop. I've been slowly teaching myself to code (on my desktop), and I'd like to be able to work on the same projects on both my desktop and laptop when I'm not at home. What's the best way to do this? For reference, I use Visual Studio. I know what git is (though I don't know how to use it yet), should I set that up and learn it? I'm asking because these are really tiny projects that are really just practice problems, like, so small that my other option is just to copypasta them onto a flash drive and bring that with me, but if there's a super simple way to do what I'm trying to do, I wanna try that instead.

How to use git:

1. Create bitbucket or github account
2. create repo on bitbucket or github
3. clone repo to your compooper using git bash or something
4. put files in the folder which is the cloned repo (make sure you navigate to the repo folder in git bash or something)
5. in git bash use: git add -a; git commit -m "blablah"; git push;
6.???

>what exactly is your question? how to update files between your laptop and desktop? if that's it, any cloud storage with sync would work.
My question was -> I have a small code project on my desktop (we'll call it 'D'). I leave home and bring my laptop (we'll call that 'L') with me wherever I'm going (for example, a coffee shop or school). I have some free time and want to continue working on the project I have on D, but I only have L with me. What is the easiest way to do that? Basically what is the best way (in Visual Studio) to have access to a project on multiple devices? I specified that the projects were very small because it might just make more sense to copy them to a flash drive and just bring them with my laptop, I wasn't sure.

>>59615075
Thanks famalamadingdong. You think I should do it using Git regardless just for the sake of goo practice/habits?

VPN encnrypts your traffic and routes it thru a server so your ISP or someone else between you and the VPN can see what you're doing.

So you would need to find a VPN run by a person or group with an unbendable moral code. One unwilling to betray you, the lowly customer even when pressured with legal or monetary means.
I'm not sure I can find a VPN that is will to have a face to face interview with me and spend time in each others company long enough to be able to gauge such personality traits.
Sounds like it's just a crap shoot and blind faith.
I may as well just pray to the gods of the VPN to keep faith with me.
>>
>>59615433
VPN is just one part. It hides your location from the things you interact with, and it encrypts your traffic so no one between you and the VPN and see exactly what you do.

If you want to hide from your VPN provider you need another layer of protection like using SSL and TOR.
