loook if you've imported the right package. e.g. there's awk.list and java.list or similar packages and you can't import them both since they both have the same classes

DefaultListModel is a generic class, just like JList.
I'll leave you with an exercise what to put into angle brackets after the type if you want a list of Strings.

Time to learn how to import packages.
i fixed the issue but it still didnt display an array of strings like i want it too. trying to display a list of students in the big box under where you select the course. new to JFrame and cant figure out JList
