Is the chromebook still the best student laptop?

As long as you aren't an engineering student.

Hardware-wise, yes due to their relatively cheap price. But I've found that for decent software support you must replace Chrome OS with linux.

In general I find fanless laptops with SSDs to be incredibly more comfortable than a standard machine. You can use it on your bed with out fans getting blocked, you can throw it like a frisbee and have nothing to worry about, etc. My first fanless laptop was the HP stream 13 a few years back and it really opened my eyes to how comfortable they are for web browsing. Beats a tablet anyday. I go to school for comp sci and could definitely get by with a fanless laptop. I and the school have desktops for anything really heavy.
hmm. What other option would there be in the under $500 price range?
I'm open to tablets
