I dream of the day when the xx20 series can be run entirely blobless.
>>
NSA free ThinkPad? Am I restricted to Core 2's?
>>
>>59602182
Librebooted X200.

The Sandy/Ivy era Thinkpads are slowly having their blobs neutralized (see me_cleaner on github, removes _most_ of the Intel Management Engine botnet) but after they will ever be completely free is doubtful. The Intel botnet is just too ingrained the whole system by this era of Thinkpads. Like cancer.

>girl
Since you yourself decided to make your gender an issue, I'll tell you if you post tits with a timestamp.
>>
>>59602328
Possibly but unlikely. That's just my speculation.

Problem with xx20 is that a small portion of the Intel ME blob needs to be left intact to initialize the CPU, or something like that. Laptop will shut off after 30 minutes if the ME blob is entirely absent from the BIOS chip.
>>
>>59602379
This but it is now possible to de activate ME completely while the laptop is running. If this could be automated a free computer with Core i CPU would be possible.

Are there any lightweight thinkpads with decent perfomance?
>>
>>59602876
I've bought a couple different caddies that were both the absolute cheapest on eBay when I bought them, and in terms of materials and build quality I was very satisfied. The biggest difference will be in electronics if anything - I had an LED on one of them burn out when I first tried it. It runs fine and I don't care about losing it since if anything the lights are a nuisance, though I guess it doesn't say much about the quality of it.

Really I would just go cheap though, if it's defective you just get a refund. Most sellers will be flogging off the same shit, just undercutting each other and occasionally including a bezel or screwdriver with it.

6 cell in T430s is 48 Wh whereas the normal 6 cell is 60 Wh. Can't get larger than that on the T430s unless you go the slice battery route in which case you get about 75 Wh vs the 90 Wh of a 9 cell but it will wear quickly since the system prefers to drain it to 0% before switching

Materials are also different I guess. The T430s is Mg alloy base, CFRP lid while the T430 is CFRP all over but in practice it should take being rammed into a wall all the same
>>
>>59604317
err, fuck. Ultrabay battery, not slice battery
Slice battery works on both and that's another 90 Wh but it introduces an annoying incline to the machine

when this day comes, the xx20 series will be as old as the x60 series is now. good thing is that the 2nd gen i5s/i7s doesn't get obsolete so fast, because intel doesn't really develop their CPUs.

For T61, would there be noticeable difference between Intel and nVidia GPU for general desktop applications use?
nVidia has its own ram so it might free up some memory bandwidth, or would it be unnoticeable? And would it produce more or less heat under same near-zero load?

I just want to keep shitposting on that glorious 1600x1200 IPS LED, but modern websites are apparently not tested for performance on anything below i5.

Both are premium machines, What are you going to use the thinkpads for and which screen size would you prefer? Answer to those questions might be crucial in making the right choice.
>>
>>59609266
it's possible to get a 1600x900 t420 without the nvidia gpu. some even prefer igpu-only for better heat management (especially the nutters who put quad cores in) and less hassle with egpu setups

>Has there been any long write tests on cheap Ssd's?
not quite but each one has a rated lifetime TBW. cheap shit drives are rated for 40-80 TBW while quality drives usually have way more than 100, even 700 or 1,500 TBW like the Samsung SM863.

I can't not laugh whenever i hear someone say "anon no matter what you do any ssd will last forever like at least 10 years"

I always look for OEM/enterprise drives new or used because a company/manufacturer will look twice whenever they choose a ssd for their machines/servers, and each one will get properly tested so people buying those machines wont say the said laptop/server/desktop brand is shit.

Does anyone here own a T420 and an eGPU setup? I'd like to buy an eGPU dock for yes, >muh games, in case I will be away from home for quite some time with my Thinkpad, so I can just bring it in a small tub with a 750ti or something and plug it in and play some vidya. I just can't seem to get a solid answer with the TOLUD issues and what not being a problem for systems with 4GB+ RAM (I have 8GB) and certain docks being unstable and all that.

I've looked into all the PE4* docks and also the EXP GDC, and the PE4's are ridiculously expensive, and some people say the EXP is shit and others say it's worked wonderfully for them.

Any advice?
>>
>>59609266
There are plenty of T420's with 1600x900 panels that only have the iGPU on ebay. Mine came like that. Otherwise if you an iGPU-only model cheap enough for your tastes, just buy the 900p panel separately and install it yourself. They're like ~$50 average, and it's the easiest swap in the world. Just make sure you also buy the HD+ cable.
>>
>>59614927
If you're running 16GB of RAM and an eGPU there are some screen flashing issues. Using a custom BIOS should fix this, there is an article on thinkwiki.

>>
>>59615137
So what dock would you recommend, you think? I know I'm cheap but I'd much rather not spend $100 on a PE4(x) dock. Has the EXP GDC V8 fixed any issues of the previous revisions?

>>59615978

>>
>>59616518

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

Are trackpoints cross compatible between generations of thinkpads?
>>
>>59616580
Yes. They're all the same. But with the 30 series and the new keyboard they changed the height because of the lower profile of the keyboard. You can put an old trackpoint on a new keyboard but it would stick out and make typing uncomfortable.
>>
>>59616580
>>59616598
So you can but you shouldn't put the same clit on both laptops. The R400 cap will be fully compatible with the L540 but it will make it uncomfortable and it might even touch the screen when the lid is closed and leave some ugly marks. If you get caps for the L540 these won't fit on the R400 though.

Can some of you anon recommend something for my situation?

I'm gonna buy a 14 or 15 inch thinkpad which I need to last at least the 4 years of my PhD. What I want is some decent computing power (not like fluid simulations or so but I do need to handle and analyze a lot of large datasets) and at least SSD and 8gb RAM. Battery duration is not an issue for me.
>>
>>59616848
Btw budget around 1000€
And keep in mind thinkpads in Europe are like 1.5 times more expensive here compared to the US
>>
>>59616859
In that case go for a T460p. These usually go new for around 1000€. If you can't find one for that price get a T450p.
If you want 15" get one of the corresponding 15" models.

BTW the p is important if you want more computing power. They're a bit thicker but it's not really noticable. Also the price is better than the regular models.
>>
>>59616881
I just noticed, with student discount you might also find a T470p for 1000€ (or a little bit more). These arent widely available yet though.

It would be kinda hard to find a T460 for that price in Europe. Maybe a T450 which is not worse in any way really. If you want good battery life you should also consider that you might have to get a new battery which adds to the price. I'd stay away from X1C if I were you. Switching the battery on those isn't as easy as removing the old one and popping in a new one. These have to be opened up completely for battery replacement.

what the actual fuck? you don't need to check any compatibility. you just get informed about the ports you get before buying a computer. jesus christ what the fuck? it's not like you have to study data sheets to find out what your options are.

>>59616718
I don't really want to know why you don't have a display port monitor, but really, why don't you have one, it's been the standard connector for years...
The real questions are:
>Why didnt't you get informed before you bought the laptop?
>Why do you order an adaptor from "ali papa" when you could just get it on Amazon?
>Why didn't you buy the laptop from a trustworthy dealer to ensure that all your ports are working?

>but it looks like the t470 and 570 only have 768p?
that's bullshit. they come with 1080p IPS and I think there are even some 4k touch models. 768p is an option mainly for businesses that want to buy them as cheaply as possible in truckloads. the build quality is great from my experience. I've had a chance to test a T470 and it's enormous compared to older Lenovo models. they finally managed to match at least the late IBM models
>>
>>59618239
>>59618239
The 1366x768 res is an option they still offer for some reason. Companies buy a lot of laptops at once and they typically don't care if their employees get eye cancer. But I gotta say, it's pretty retarded even offering this. The 1080p option only costs like $100 more. On a >$1000 machine it's mandatory if you ask me. I'm OK with the 768p screen on my X230 but if I were to buy a new laptop it would at least have to be 1080p.
>>
>>59618172
How would you say the 460 series compares to the 470? Considering they cost about 30% more
>>
>>59618134
Thermal differences should be reasonably minor if the dGPU is effectively off. Of course I'd be amazed if it produced absolutely no heat at all even when off through the bios, but you'd probably a bigger heatsink anyway which could offset it I suppose. In terms of straight up dGPU vs iGPU though, as far as I know even late models will give better power and heat efficiency on the iGPU.

>>59618150
>IS IT TOO MUCH TO FUCKING ASK FOR A T420 WITH KABY LAKE
What does Kaby Lake even have going for it? As far as I see Sandy, and even more so Ivy, are barely behind in performance. The biggest gain beyond battery life would just be getting pcie SSDs. If you just want a thicc bricky T420 then stick with it or go with a T430 for a similarly negligible performance boost.

>>59619097
4k is never overkill. You need scaling of course
>>
>>59619178
>getting 8k when you could actually get the non display option with USB brain interface that you plug in the back of your head matrix style
>>
>buy used x220 i5 2,5ghz
>upgrade ram to 8gb
>add a 120gb msata ssd and install win10pro on it
>it boots faster and works smoother than the latest fujitsu celsius h with win7pro i've got from work
is this the power of thinkpads or is win10 really that much faster?
>>
>>59619293
>USB brain interface
>not even type c
dude, come on.

>plug in the back of your head
ugh, wires, so 20th century.
go wireless already, cunt.
>>
>>59619316
Win10 -is- faster but has plenty of drawbacks. Also consider this: Your fujitsu celsius h is still different hardware. You should have tried win7pro on that thinkpad my dude.

Personally I gave up on using W10 on it but maybe with creators update I will probably put that shit on it again. Who knows.
>>
>>59619316

Have you got everything working on w10?
>>
I really fucking hate this image retention on the x220 IPS
>>
>>59619343
>creators update
meh, how many times will they disappoint us?
I, for one, have no real expectations from the coming update.
>>
Hey guys, I know this might sound a little bit weird since most people dislike it, but

Is there any good IPS panel for the X220 that is also glossy? I mean one with no issues at all. I'm trying to find that shit on europe but the cheapest IPS panel I could find that is not shit costs 80€ and it's matte.
>>
>>59619344
so far, yes. Fingerprint Reader works fine with windows hello, camera works, trackpoint+trackpad, wifi, Ethernet - just install the drivers from the lenovo site, some are officially win10, for the other ones just take the win8 ones.
>>
>>59619343
mine had win7pro preinstalled, but i fucking hate it for personal reasons. and since win10 works better with ssd than win7 and i'm dependend of the latest versions of MS Office, win10 it is.
>>
>>59619369
I don't have that many but I always expect this one update for this one sucky version of Windows that turns it into something usable, like XP SP3, Vista SP2 (well ok, this has several other problems but still far better than the abomination it was at the beginning), 7 SP1, 8.1 update 1.... know what I mean?
>>
>>59619395
hmm, i understand.
every new update gives us a new hope,
every new update breaks our every last hope.

but of course if this update turns out to be the XP SP3 for win10 then kudos to MS.

we'll see.
>>
>>59619395
>know what I mean?
not really, win10 is fucking shit
>>
>>59619452
no, it's not, it's fine.
>>
>>59619452
What I mean doesn't contradict that statement either. It's shit now, but it can become decent in the future.
>>
>>59619357
Same. But from what I've heard it depends on which one you're getting, am I wrong on that? I don't really know which to look for, just went with a cheap one..
>>
>>59619476
yes it is.
>>
>>59619513
It doesn't happen on the X230 IPS panel and that one is compatible with the X220. If you can find a broken X230 for a good price you could actually transfer the whole lid including hinges.
>>
>>59619578
can you tell me why without the use of memes from 2015?
>>
>>59619578
It's ad ridden spyware with an inconsistent UI and unnecessary restrictions.
>>
>>59619481
>it can become decent in the future
Yep and Hitler could have become an astronaut. But how likely is that really?
>>
>>59619585
so, basically every other consumercentric os?
>>
>>59619609
Yes. So? The fact that all others do it too doesn't make it better.
>>
>>59619600
He shouldn't have shot himself in the head then.

Now that you say it Microsoft shouldn't have shot itself in the head either with their retarded square interface to shill their failing tablet and phone department.
>Hurr touch is the future.
It's not and fuck Microsoft for pretending it is. We've had touch screen laptops since 10 years and nobody likes them
>>
>>59619609
>windows 7 and 8.1 have ads and forced updates
Not really tho but keep trying, Pajeet.

Can you you boot from ExpressCard SSD on thinkpads?

Is there any hope for upgrading the t420 screen? I tried google and it seems the guy that sells the parts stopped

Is it possible to swap Cardbus/SmartCard module with Cardbus/ExpressCard on T61?

I would like to know too. I've seen one person say yes but I'd like more confirmation.

T430S

Any way to make the middle mouse button work as a scrolling key? It's currently just working as a middle mouse button.
>>
Thanks for memeing me into buying these shit ThinkPads. Lenovo quality is terrible on the T420. I've had 2 keyboards break on me in the past 2 months. Both of them got fucked at the connector and now some keys refuse to work. Apply pressure on the connector and everything works again. Pull off the pressure, it's shit. How the fuck am I supposed to fix this? I'm not going to buy another keyboard. This laptop has sucked enough money already. Do I super glue the connector or what?
>>
>>59622388
> break on me
troll harder, faggot
>>
>>59622416
Fuck off cunt. The keys refuse to work, I would call that breaking. This has happened with 2 keyboards. The first one was the one that came with the laptop, the other one was an OEM. If you have a solution, post it. If you don't, then go on licking your piece of shit ThinkPad
>>
>>59622487
Buy BMP shitface, no one uses memepads in 2017
>>
>>59622856
Maybe you're right. ThinkPads are genuinely terrible. The build quality decreases with every generation along with Lenovo's customer service quality. Those guys are fucking cluless. I've never bought an Apple product, but maybe I will have to. At least I'll be assured of it's reliability.
>>
>>59621090
No. They're better used for adding additional USB 3.0 anyways
>>
>>59622380
Yes, if you use Windows, and you install proper drivers.

the driver issue around 10-series egpu setups is driving me nuts. a low profile 1050 ti would be so perfect, but nothing past 375.63 works (and it'd be double-fucked if the thinkpad didn't have pcie hotswapping). whyd nvidia have to break it

Ebin troller
>>
>>59623080
This is not entirely true. On Windows you have 2 options.

>1. Use it for scrolling
>2. Use it for middle click

>>59622380
You can't have both unless you're using a program called TPMiddle.

Does anyone here own a y520? If so, can you compare it to the inspiron 7567?
They look identical, spec wise, but how is the battery life?

basically, after the nvidia drivers got past 372.70, egpu setups over pcie connections without hotswapping capability (non-expresscard mostly) stopped working with 10xx cards. after 375.63, no 10xx card would work at all.

there's a new trick that popped up where you install 368.81, then change some registry stuff, making sure not to reboot, then install the latest driver. it's a little jank but some people report it works. this won't work for 1050 (ti), some later 1060s, and probably the 1080 ti, because they didn't have driver support until after 368.81

short of it is: 1050 ti egpu + thinkpad can run over expresscard with 375.63, but nothing newer until someone figures out a hack or nvidia shape the fuck up. hope [dumb game you want to play] lets you run it with an older driver installed

7xx and 9xx not affected at all. any issues with those is a whole different mess, but usually not a problem or fixable on thinkpads. my x220 + expresscard adapter + 750 ti runs fine

name a couple of games and how many fps you get
I wanna do this too but I've read somewhere the e-gpu works at pcie x1 speeds.
