If you're dealing with the Finance department instead of CS, maybe you can get away with something more simple; Like a fancy calculator, or a stock/account manager. Maybe even a program that can somewhat predict changes in the stock market (by just guessing by comparing recent data to previous)
Something that looks mildly impressive as long as you put in a decent amount of work, but that's not actually complicated.
