What went so wrong?
It was basically a mediocre protocol that became a bitch for corporations that took the source code, modified it, closed it, and made actually successful software like Whatsapp and Facebook messenger out of it.
FOSSfags had their chance. They blew it.
CIA shitposters sabatoging and sliding threads about it

google stopped using it.
Logically, people should be using XMPP. It works in a similar way to email in the sense that it's server to server. But people won't use it because it came too late and it's not being marketed to people as a product. For example: Email and IRC are old as fuck, so everyone already uses it. MSN was pre installed on windows, AIM came with AOL. It's not going to catch on simply because ""normies"" haven't had it hand fed to them.

It is held back by having very few good open clients, and only one decent server application.

It could have been hand fed to them but we let big companies offer their proprietary solutions first and last.
Gotta admit though, XMPP development fucking sucked and those big companies are the only people who actually did anything with XMPP.

to make sucessfull chat/social network you need enormous amount of user, because social chat is only viable if it have your friends. The chicken and the egg problem is mostly done by smart jews and marketing, that FOSS don't have.
I wish we have a nice tv / internet ads like microsoft, fb, skype had
