Biggest watch meme?
>>
Do any watches actually appreciate in value? Every mug with a rolex babbles on how it will gain money because it's limited edition, blah blah.
>>
>>59590386
If you paid out of your ass for a quartz, you surely would want it to be decorated?
>>
>>59590417
90% of them don't

Some of them do.

I'm sure someone will post that vid where an old man finds out his $200 Rolex GMT he bought after WW2 is now worth $40,000 because it had all the papers, the receipt, the chronometer rating slip, and it was a first production run.

>>

>>
>>59590579
>they're the only British watch company of note

No that would be Bremont, though they're also a bit pathetic in that they try and pretend their own movements when they don't.
>>
>>59590589
Certain watches will become more expensive just after they are discontinued but not by much.

The Seiko Cocktail time will probably sell for a bit more over the next few years.

And you're talking $50-$100
>>
It costs $100 to buy a Seagull ST19 movement and that's not bulk price.

There's no reason why the market isn't flooded with cheap mechanical chronographs.

But if you want a mechanical chrono and don't want to pay kilobucks you've pretty much got the 1963, Poljot or Alpha fake Rolex Daytona.
>>
>>59590589
In the short term (10 years), the value increase of a desirable limited model will at best correpsond to a service.

And you never know which model it will be that increases.
>>
>>59590473
The company is British but they have the watches made in Switzerland because muh Swiss made.

If the supply of ETA movements ever actually does dry up then they will probably switch to Miyota and move production to the UK so they can be 'made in Britain'

Or more likely to China and not mention it.
>>
>>59590713
Watch autists will already know they use ETA movements so "muh swiss made" shouldn't need to be mentioned. And putting "London" on something has enough prestige to impress normies so I don't know why they have chosen to put "London" and "Swiss made" on the dial, it's just confusing to normies and signals they have no brand identity.

They are pretty well made watches with reliable movements. My Trident 300 only gained 7 seconds from when the clocks went back to today when they went forward.

They're only really worth buying when they have a sale though.

Shitter Watch:

False heritage: Either completely made up, or an old company that did have heritage at one point but went bankrupt and was bought back by a conglomerate.

"Swiss Made": When it barely meets the 51% criteria that the law defines.

Non in house movement: Generic ETA shitter in chink cases

Affordability: Anybody can get one

Mass production

It's sold in mall shop windows in generic jewelry stores

It's the kind of thing your wife would buy you for your birthday.

>Do any watches actually appreciate in value?

Back then watches were not overpriced.

They were sold in smaller numbers.

People actually used them so old watches in original good condition and papers are rare.

They actually had tasteful, now iconic, designs instead of oversized bling bling.

So no it's highly unlikely anything but perhaps some high-end limited production watches (which I doubt many here can afford) will rise in value.

Markup is a function of far more than automation. Perceived prestige counts for much more.

Blind test of various brands of coke has shown this. In one case a cheapo brand was found to taste better than either Coca Cola or Pepsi.

Watches gained value in crime. That includes as bribes in China which has become less popular after a long series of executions. Watches are also popular for smuggling valuables and around here are used by prostitutes to transport valuables safely home.

So prices will probably come down. 3D printing on microscopic scale will cause a massive shakeup. Best linewidths now are around 250 nm. MEMS is even better but startup cost is rather high.

Tellingly the Openmovement has been very very very slow.

Women are significantly more demanding now.

Also, the building codes and safety standards for houses and cars have significantly raised the cost of buying them.

In the 60s you could buy a metal box with wheels and seats. Now you need to buy significantly more complicated ABS, traction control, airbag systems and it all had to be tested.

It's no longer legal to manufacture and sell a simple metal box with wheels and seats.

It would be false to say that they are superior at aesthetic options, build quality, complication choice, variety of sizes, and so on, because no other technology has stepped up to compete with them in those areas. So they are not "superior" technology for those applications, but more like "unchallenged".

Been wanting to add a moonphase into my collection. I was looking a mechanical ones but the thought occurred to me that if I don't wear/wind it everyday the moonphase is going to be inaccurate. A speedy reduced is somehow under 13mm thick.

It's more that the new tudor movements are thicker than the ETAs they used previously. Add a chrono module to that and it gets even thicker.

Anyone know of any watches that keep up with the date/calendar precisely?

Specifically, I'm looking for a watch that can keep up with the 4 year calendar...like, y'know how for 3 years February will have 28 days, and then in that 4th year February has a 29th day?
I'm looking for a watch that can keep up with the alternating 30/31 date scheme combined with the 28/29 issue with February.

Are there any non-shitter Swiss watches in the $200-400 price range? Does Certina make only shitter automatic watches?
I love Seikos but I should get something swiss too for my collection.
>>
>>59599961
why should you get something swiss? anything less than $1000 is usually using just barely enough swiss labour/parts to pass the legal bar to have "swiss made" on the dial. Dont buy a watch for "completions" sake, buy something that makes you smile when you see it and that you'll want to wear everyday. Doesn't matter if it's a $10 Casio terrorists or a $6000 swiss "muh GRAIL".

And back then they were impossible to get because it's a japan only limited edition.

It's dreadful.

Anyone here explain the moving red square window on the indices of the Rolex skydweller? It doesn't seem to serve a purpose

Month indicator, so that'd be august.
>>
My cheap beater broke before I can afford the watch I was saving up for. Not sure whether to buy a cheap one for the time being or just wear this broken one for another month.
>>
>>59601353
use your phone for a month
>>
>Seiko wants us to pay €4,000 for this """re-release"""

And /wt/ has the guts to tell me that they are not as greedy as the Mountain Jews?
>>
>>59601353
Depends how broken is it. Is it unusable, or is it just cosmetic damage?
I have an f91w on a nato in my backpack that I keep in case I forget/break my usual watch. I'd rather have a shit watch than no watch.
>>
>>59601505
It's a limited edition reissue of a popular watch, well made, with a good movement.
It will be sold out fast.
>>
>>59601505
It's about as faithful of a recreation of the original as one can get, with an 8L35 in it. That and it's a limited edition.

But yes, 4k is too much.
>>
>>59601518
Its just none functional. Pretty sure it could be fixed with a service but the watch was so cheap in the first place it would probably cost more to service than to just buy it again.
>>
>>59601575
Then why the fuck would you wear it
>>
>>59601601
I feel weird without one on. I suppose I would get used to not having it eventually.
>>
>>59601505
It's not meant for poor people. Maybe the SKX is more appropriate for someone of your lower class.
>>
>>59601527
At €4,000 you can get a Tudor or Sinn with much higher quality finish and COSC-certified movement.
>>
>>59601505
I don't get the thicc hour markers
>>
>>59601688
Forgot to mention that the Nomos Ahoi is in the same price range with a much better movement.

It's a diver. You need to be able to see it well underwater. So tons of lume, and different size indices for 6-9-12 to know which way it is
>>
>>59601773
can't see it in the muff though

Just bought this bad boy.

Did I do well?

Incredible purchasing power of the west due to limited internal competition but rising economies like Japan provided quality goods at very low prices.

In addition energy, food, and other daily necessities were cheap due to good advancements in technology yet low population
