Why do there need to be so many different USB standards with a new one coming out every few years? Why can't there just be one nice universal standard that works on any device.

What's the deal with USB standards?
They're not universal...
And they're not standard!

USB was a mistake
Because each one is shit and every time someone tries to improve USB they get it wrong.

It's just gonna get worse

That shitty cartoon does not apply to software, creation of a new standard to be adopted is optional.
First, you had the regular old USB. You had A on the host end, B on the peripheral. Easy as it goes.
Then someone figures out that the A and B plugs are fat as all fuck, so they need something smaller. So you get mini-A and mini-B for those smaller devices that can't have such a huge hole.
Then someone figures out that the mini-A and mini-B plugs are not small enough, so they make them even smaller and that's the micro plugs.
Now, we're using our USB devices and we notice that they're slow. So we need a faster standard. So we need more pins. Now we take the old plugs and cram some more pins in them. But since we want to have backwards compatibility, you put the pins so you can still plug in old shit. Now we have the SuperSpeed plugs.
Finally, someone figured out that we have for years been pulling our hair out trying to insert the fucking USB plugs in since they're all fucking asymmetrical and you need to have the correct end for correct device even though we don't give a shit which is the host. Enter Type-C, the bright future of USB.
