There's no small reason for it; Thinkpads are extremely affordable while having one of the strongest track records for reliability and have the ability to swap any part imaginable on them. All of those things are incredibly attractive to /g/ users who enjoy being able to customize any machine to suit their needs.

There's a lot of value in having Apple. Macbooks have longevity to a certain extent that stems from efficient design and being able to know what kind of software will be on it in the coming years. For some people that approach works for them, especially if it means they can pay to not worry about their computing experience. That experience is a luxury that most (especially on /g/) can't afford.

You can be poor and be clean. You can still have a good computing experience if you're willing to put in the work.
