I think you'll find that you're wrong, lot's of distros actually do have a similar kind of advertising to the Ubuntu stuff.

Search engines pay them a proportion of ad revenue to be included in the default install. Like a while ago I remember Mint's Firefox had Yahoo as the default search in ffox because they paid them for the spot.
