I'd download all of wikipedia

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Data_dump_torrents#enwiki
>>
PORN
>>
I'd get a 100 gbits connection, 4 TB hard disks from HGST equaling 60 PB (30 PB for storage and then the same amount for backup) and a few thousand Raspberry Pi for the actual downloading. When done I'd write an AI to go through all the porn and organize it.

>>

What information would you need to download? If you can set up a home network then you can create your own Internet because the Internet is just that: several networks joined together to create one massive network.
>>
Well, first I buy as many HDD:s I feel like I might need or can acquire.

Then I talk to some friends and agree on meeting up for some filesharing w/o internet.

Then I'll probably first download a lot of anime, it is easy and quick to do. I have a lot of porn already, but some of that, too. I move to music once I've got a lot of porn and anime; music is harder to find and may be slow to download. I will not bother with movies, they can be acquired or loaned as DVD:s/Blu-Rays.

While doing this, I also download lots and lots of books on all the topics I'm interested in. At some point, I grab the entire English wikipedia. I download all kinds of software that I might need: install media, as well. I'd try to grab manuals and guides for many things, but many of those could be bought as well, so it isn't that important.
>>
>>59561077
Nothing. after 1 month without internet, population will run crazy and start destroying the "civilization". After a month of riots damaging infrastructure, tribal anarchy will arrise and priests will convice the mass that hoomanity is better off without the internet. First they'll break every computer and smartphone they can find. They'll storm the datacenters. And then, they'll round up the people with knowhow and burn their hearts in a ceremonial pyre dedicated to the new world order.
>>
>>59561077
Download all books from Project Gutenberg.
https://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Gutenberg:The_CD_and_DVD_Project

Also download CiteSeerX, but that seems to be a bitch though :/
>>
Trick question

If the internet were shut down, it would be due to a lack of use. By that point, we'd probably have global neural networks or some shit that replaced the internet, at which point shutting down the internet would be an act of mercy to aged hardware more than an act of anarchy.
>>

If the Internet goes down then so do phone networks. Probably not true 10 years ago but now it is.
>>
>>59562219
Uh, care to explain? I legitimately am not very familiar with phone networks, but my old mobile phone works today just like it did in 2001, I'm pretty sure it hasn't started relying on some magical new network.

This is exactly how it works. In the old days a cell tower had a direct line connection to the phone company. Now they just connect the tower to the Internet assuming it is available. If not then it depends on proximity. They use mesh networks also where one tower with an Internet connection can feed other towers in range.

There is a difference between infrastructure used to access the internet (ISPs etc) and privately own infrastructure which does not even touch the public internet, which is my point. Like networks used to control remote power plants, for example I have two water dams nearby which really only have one control room at one dam, and then remotely control the other dam via microwave. Or fiber networks used to carry broadcast network programming to local affiliates.

Waste of space, or is this ingenious fucker waiting for something to actually happen in order to do it and use the space for ultra storage capacity, downloading the entire essential internet?

We'll find out in the next chapter, meanwhile...

4chan learns how to set up their own internet structure based on BBS thread systems, and classic style IRC on landlines, takes a shit on the modern ISP's, disregards international policy, and destroys modern social web structure, forcing everyone to become basement dwellers.
>>
>>59564790

It'd be text only, and we'd call it Moonchan.

>>
>>59564410
you fucking dense faggot

technically., neither is your home cable connected to the internet, just to your ISP backbone

with all this monopoly ISP and telephony providers tend to be the same companies in many countries / areas so in essence the digital data is all travelling in the same fiber, cell towers just have dedicated cables to the nearest point, anywhere from a hundred meters to some kilometers and in the end it ends up the same land and oceanic fiber crossing the planet

in the 90s there were copper grids across the land and a mix of satellite and fiver inteconections, so it was a totally separate system for some years, but even on most 3rd world countries if a cellphone or landlide reaches your home, it has at most some lenght of copper until it reaches a fiber backbone point and travels alongside cat gifs

OP here.

I think it only fair to list what I think I would want. Some I already have.

>movies/tv
This alone takes up a large amount of disc space, but obviously any data horde would have a lot of them. We have to forgo the blu-ray rips here though and get YIFY equivalents.

>books
Likely the most important part of any data collection. I have thousands of books, but I need hundreds of thousands. All topics. From dummie guides on turbo pascal to lesbian literature. Every topic should be downloaded.

>games
Retro games and emulators are the easiest to download here. PC games are spread out to hell and back, but dos box has some nice collections. One also must not forget printouts for board games, though card game rules and the like may fall in books.

>software
Another large collection of various things from utilities like Hiron boot to even old encyclopedias and a lot of OS's.

>data
There is a lot of databases and information out there. Scientific knowledge, NASA data, etc. Some hard to find maybe, but well worth a copy. One example is wiki leaks years ago leaked a logistics report from the Iraq war. Basically an excel file of everything they needed to fight the war. It was very detailed, for example one command "tent" listed all the computer stuff they were using including a color laser printer.

>porn
I'm not going to deny this.

>pics
A large number of photographs exist out there. From nature, to satellite, weather, etc. I don't need every kek frog pic, but a pic of all the animals would be nice to have.

>medical
Engineering and medical knowledge would both be part of books, but medical especially is very important and a vast array of knowledge exists on the subject.

>audio
Again a large number of audio files exist from music to audio books, and even nature sounds. How to learn every language on Earth seems important.

I'm probably forgetting so much stuff.

>>
>>59567142
well, of course, and I don't have dozens of petabytes sitting around.

Probably 50Tb would be enough to 'entertain' a person for plenty of time, depending on the content, but as far as say, backing up the web, that seems a paltry volume, miniscule and easily exceeded, giuven the sresources.

But getting the resources is always an issue.

As for me, the connexion here and all, if I had a month to go, I'd be hard pressed to download a whole Tb even, the bandwidth is so small.

*sigh* life is interesting.

I think there has been some good things that came from home computers, but for a good 15 or so years now they've long gone past the point of diminishing returns.

I remember watching The BBS Documentary and hearing a guy talk about how he spoke to a Vietnamese doctor who was able to get the latest information about treating AIDS and HIV through FidoNet and the BBS scene. Who could argue that was a bad thing?

Same with things like Project Gutenberg.

Like I said, long-since gotten past the point of advantages compared to cost.
