Why did big companies (enterprise customers) abandon ThinkPad?

Before, every large company way buying ThinkPads by truckloads and now they're not.

Before, you could expect tons of used ThinkPads on various sites for cheap because companies were upgrading, and now thse used computer markets don't have many ThinkPads.

What happened? What platform did large companies move to?

Viral marketing on popular public figures.
It's easy, everyone thinks people use them because that's what they see.
>blackhack con or some hacker club (with stickers but it's okay as long as glowing apple logo is still noticeable)
nerds and haxors baited
>big CEOs, NASA, stock market
entrepreneurs, mba, or scifags baited
>showbiz, hollywood, e-celebs, fashion models
typical hipster baited

"oh so that's what the 'experts' use."
-t. applesheeps

They have a really smart promoter who thought of a grand idea by making it a meme.
>fall for meme
>replicate meme
>meme it
>drag others in the meme

Only the stoics, engineers, 1337, and gamers don't fall for the meme.
>>
>>59560416
Most prefer Elitebooks and Dell business laptops because of their more 'professional' appearance. Thinkpads look kind of goofy and only /g/ thinks they're cool.
>>
>>59560558
Apple being better
>>
>>59560416
>why
Because Thinkpads used to be made by the #1 tech company for western enterprises, IBM. Then it got taken over by a literal who Chinese company so they all flocked to HP and Dell.
>>
>>59560865

It's like /g/ thinks a CTO is just some old guy waiting for a golden parachute. And not someone who knows what the fuck they are doing.

Lenovo's garbage
>>
Do you think companies would remain using Thinkpads if it was taken over by Acer?

No of course not and the same is true for Lelnovo
>>
>>59560416
Pretty much because of >>59560507 + >>59560872

Chinknovo made them Macbook clones appealing to normies and everything went to shit
>>
preinstalling malware on the laptops was probably a bad idea
I would never trust a lenovo product after that
>>
I work for a bank. We are switching to some slick hp laptops.
>>
Lenovo were caught repeatedly pre-installing malware and adware on their laptops, even hiding it in the Lenovo update manager. They redesigned the classic Thinkpad design into a weird Macbook clone. A lot of the things that made Thinkpads great laptops (great keyboards, bullet proof design, so well built they're used in space by NASA) slowly eroded.

Dell and HP have better reputations at this point.
>>
>>59560416
Lenovo destroyed the 'thinkpad quality'
If you're gonna compare the pre or post-IBM schematics to the newer thinkpads, you'll know what's shit and what's not immediately.

The latest thinkpads also come with a crappy ideapad joke keyboard with terrible F-keys and looks closely similar to ideapad schematics. At this point, thinkpad is just a different meme branding name.

Slim meme (tm) by apple killed the sturdy laptop meme plus the apple's iOS/OSX UI invited many normies who salivate on shiny shit.
>>
>>59560971
>>59560978
I think you're looking too deep into it, at points only vir/g/ins really care about, safe for the spying software. It's just very simple: a serious company wants to appear serious and you don't look serious with a Chinese branded goofy looking laptop.

As stale and boring HP and Dell are, they at least make sure their laptops look very 'business', which apparently is important for companies.
>>
>>59560416
My retard employer (1000+ employees) just buys whatever laptop they can get the best deal on at that moment. As a result we have a mess of Dell XPSs, Latitudes, Lenovo Ideapads, and HP Specters all over the place with not a drop of standardization.
>>
>>59561041
In companies of such scale the decisions are made by the purchasing department based on a list of demands. Basically if it can type and meets some demands they will get the cheapest rather than the most /g/ approved one.
t. works at purchasing department
>>
>>59561002
I assure you NASA (RIP) would care if Thinkpads work well in space or not. Lenovo shit the bed by forgetting that their target audience is business and instead trying to imagine some businessman who is also a normie and wants some hybrid abomination which isn't quite a Thinkpad but also not quite a Macbook. What they came up with is straight up ugly.

I think people overstate the Lenovo thing, companies would keep using Thinkpad if they retained the original IBM look because it's iconic. Not this current design which doesn't please anybody.
>>
>>59561101
Maybe because I'm from Europe but over here the Thinkpad meme is long dead. 'Business look' would be a HP badge, even though it stands for shit quality, and maybe a Macbook if you want to look hip.

Yeah, and it isn't even only the famous people doing the marketing.

Every beautiful young person using a macbook at a cafe, every DJ using a macbook for his set - all of them are doing marketing for Apple, the glowing Apple logo is just that noticeable. Even if a DJ covers it up, you can basically tell that it is an Apple PC.

And I genuinely don't remember seeing a DJ who used a non-Apple laptop, it is kinda bizarre. But I'll give Apple that they do have very nice music software available, and the "just werks" thing is appealing to professionals who aren't good with computers. Still.

My dad's business did that. They used to use ThinkPads, but they now use Dell Latitudes. Why? Because they can't trust a Chinese company.

In the US, the standard choice for business PCs is Dell. In Europe, it's HP.

surely there has to be some other reason besides the bullshit you just spouted about how they just kept using thinkpads for simplicity reasons.

nobody parrots that shit because they think the inside of a space station is some kind of extreme environment, they parrot that shit because it's fucking true that scientists and astronauts are using thinkpads in space right fucking now while you are sitting here autistically sperging all over your apple keyboard.

Lenovo refuses to change the Thinkpad to keep up with competition. Elitebooks and Latitudes fulfill what people need and Lenovo won't innovate or at least find a gap to fill. Thinkpad build quality seems to go down with every generation, which is bad since they were already at the bottom. Proof is looking at used Thinkpads vs used everything else. Thinkpads usually look like trash or have huge cracks/chunks broken off since Lenovo won't improve the chassis. The keys and touchpads are always worn out and shitty looking.
>>
>>59569173
>trackpad is ridiculously big on modern mbp
if you do a lot of mouse-work and scrolling the trackpad is a godsend. I bought a macbook pro for ableton live, the scrolling and extra space are so nice i prefer it over an actual mouse. if all you do is edit text you shouldn't complain that a trackpad is "too big" when you barely even use it.
>>

What generation Thinkpads are you talking about? Of course 10 year old laptops won't look like new, I haven't seen a keyboard that didn't develop shiny keys over a period of time.

Elitebooks and thinkpads have been basically on the same level for four or five years now. We just don't have a meme general and Elitebook buying guide. We should though
>>
>>59565219
>neck yourself you buttblasted faggot, it's year 2017 retard, the 90s was almost 20 years ago and yet they still use thinkpads on the ISS.
Hardware verification, planning and contracting for such space shit is a question of decades, of course they are still using old shit in <current year>. They also still use old-as-fuck hardware to control rockets and satellites simply because it works, it's verified and we have it. They don't care that you could build the same today using less space and energy.
When you face the decision of either assembling a team to re-verify more recent hardware for some old rocket or simply stuffing as much of that vintage hardware into a big-ass warehouse, then you usually go for the latter.

You really believe companies buy notebooks because of quality?
Usually the people behind the decision of buying new hardware have no idea what they're doing.
I work at a huge government organization. A few years ago we traded T410 and T420 for shitty HP Mini netbooks but hey, at least they're easy to maintain ( my job ) and pretty small, now we're trading those slightly disgusting netbooks for an abomination of a notebook made by a local company which has "slightly cheaper than everyone else" as it's only quality. Imagine a Chromebook that has a small HDD instead of an SSD and it comes with windows 10.
They buy the cheapest they can get because they think computers are all the same and it won't make a difference. I can't say I disagree with them, users are mostly retarded ( yesterday a 30 year old woman thinking her monitor was broken because it was too dim and asked me to replace her entire desktop, after going there and pressing the brightness button a few times, I had to spend half an hour just teaching her how to maximize her windows ), you could put a fake cardboard notebook in front of them and they couldn't be able to tell de difference and would like it as long if it's shiny.

Unfortunately, most Thinkpads today are made of plastic. No carbon/magnesium. Afaik only a small amount of models still have such components left.

Why is it so crooked and asymmetrical?

Fuck man... I have a slight case of OCD and Thinkpads would drive me insane if I had to use one. Absolute torture.

Why can't these chinks design something that looks great? At least learn about fucking symmetry.

Because PC is dying. About the only area of PC business still doing OK is gaymer PCs and gaymer accessories.

That's why all these manufacturers make these god-awful "RGB LEDs everywhere" gaudy garbage.

Having a gayming keyboard with LED backlight is quite useful at night

That's what I thought too but after few days, I turned all the lights off. I fucking hated them. It irritates the hell out of me because it's distracting and competes with the light from the screen. Just learn how to type properly and be done with it. That's what I did.

>can't be upgraded

Sorry autist, this simply isn't a thing anymore. No, in 2024 you won't find some RAM modules that'll breathe new life into it. You won't find any upgradable parts. The entire philosophy of upgrading laptops is over.

Thanks for confirming you've never actually seen one in person. You're talking about things you don't understand, shamelessly.

Trackpoints are fucking shit and quite a few models of ThinkPads have unresolved issues with serious bugs. Its an inferior pointing device unless youre playing fucking Fruit Ninja.

Fuck the fn button. Utility shit like that needs to go in a place where it won't get accidentally hit when trying to use ctrl combos that actually do something.

Same with the forward/back keys in the arrow cluster - fucking dumb. We have an ISO standard keyboard layout, fucking use it.

I wouldn't mind having Delete be next to Backspace like that. I don't know how the rest of /g/ types, but whenever I'm touch typing I only ever touch the left side of the Backspace key when pressing it, so putting Delete like that as a space-saving measure seems smart to me. I don't know if this will work out any good on non-US layouts, specifically ones with the fat Enter keys that end up shrinking Backspace to make room for what on a US keyboard is the backslash key. Having said that, where are the function keys? Or Print Screen?

Also:
>Page Up and Page Down dangerously close to those small left and right arrow keys
I can't think of a good reason for why they did that other than as a prank.
