I any distro with MATE. I run debian + mate + compiz on my shitbox laptop with C2D and 2GB of ram, works just fine.
Mint MATE is fine if you don't want to install shit from scratch.
Or just install Windows XP.

If ubuntu ran slower than win7 you're probably doing something wrong. Maybe gpu drivers? I have a very similar box and it runs ubuntu much faster than win7. Also, never use vanilla ubuntu, always choose Xubuntu instead.
